“Really expensive for what you get”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2012

We had a really bad time at Civic guest house. After driving from Cairns all we wanted was sleep which was impossible. We booked a double ensuite room for $74 for one night. The door had a huge gap under it so we could hear everything going on in the hostel all night, and the room was near the shared internet area so we could hear people talking until very late. They supply you with a tiny paper thin blanket so when we finally got to sleep we were woken up by the cold, and then at 6:30am we were woken by the sun because there are NO curtains in the rooms! The room was old, there is nowhere to put your belongings, not even a small bedside table. At $74 per night we were expecting at least a decent bed and curtains and if not then at least a decent sleep! When i complained they just told me the building was rented and they cant do anything about it, but i think its a rip off for the money we paid!!

We are very sorry that this guest did not enjoy this specific room. It is one of our nicest room and we have a number of returning guests who do ask to have this room as it is the most spacious with the largest and most comfortable bed. Skyping in the lounge is not allowed after 10pm to ensure the hostel is quiet after that time. We take great concern about our guests sleep quality. As we did not meet this guest's expectation, we kindly offered her a generous compensation. It is a pity that this was not appreciated.

Originally booked to go into a dorm but decided to upgrade to a double as the price difference was marginal!
Got picked up from the greyhound terminal free of charge (they came to pick us up, even though we were over an hour late).
Staff were lovely, made us feel very welcome.
Rooms were nice and clean, they even had clean towels in!
Overall the hostel is very clean, which is always nice when you are travelling!
The kitchen area was also clean and had plenty of utilities and an oven!!
Free wifi was fast and on all night.
Only 20-25 minute walk to greyhound terminal.
Got dropped off in the morning at the ferry point to go to magnetic sand.
Had a free storage room which is very secure.
Showers are very low down and look a but grotty but apart from that, he of the best hostels I have stayed in!

When my husband and I were traveling Australia's east coast we spent one night at Townsville's Civic Guest House and were surprised by what we got for our money. We stayed in a private double and although it was furnished very basic we liked it all lot since it was super clean, bright and seemed very well maintained. Just before we arrived they had installed a brand new a/c in the room and this was absolute bliss in hot Townsville. The common areas were also super nice, there was free coffee and tea in the kitchen as well as free Wi-Fi in the lounge. On top of it all the owners are very very friendly and wonderful hosts. You can tell that they really love what they do.

Turned up late at night and as arranged the key had been left in a lockbox outside the building, with instructions to my room and other details. The room itself was spartan, but clean and had what was needed, primarily a bed. There was also a fridge and a power point.

Road noise was a little unfortunate, but when you’ve spent the day outside, it’s surprisingly easy to drown it all out.

I’d definitely visit again, oh and the owners has a good sense of humour the next morning. :-)

Room Tip: I’d imagine the further you are away from the road the quieter it’ll be, so the two front rooms abov...

Not a bad place to stay, we shared a four bed dorm ensuite. Kitchen big enough, clean enough. No issues, apart from they could do with another firdge. Very friendly couple running the place.

Great hostel. Not in the middle of everything but right next to Castle Hill and Woolies down the street. The strand is not far away either. Dieter and his wife are lovely persons and funny as well. There are some jokes included when you get picked up by the Greyhound.

Very clean rooms and doubles for under 60$ is just awesome! Clean kitchen and very good wifi
