We stayed last few days of March.
We had been led to believe it was close to strand etc but a taxi cost us over $12 to get any where.
Our room was upstairs and the stairs were step and difficult for bags.
Our room had been refurbished to a very high standard.
Breakfast was $20 each per day.
The reception satff were polite and friendly.
We went to bed after 2 long flights and hassles on qantas and slept in - a maintenance man popped his head into our room- bit of a shock!
there was a shuttle but it was only early morning- no later that 10 am so we took a taxi ourselves to the ferry as we were going to Magnetic Island
We went to Castle Town to the shopping mall by bus ,
but centre city looked DEAD.
I was not impressed with Townsville and wouldn't bother going back

We stayed two days in Townsville having driven from Port Douglas.
We actually enjoyed our stay in the resort. There has been a lot of money spent in updating the promenade and it shows as it has a nice clean feel about it. We enjoyed eating in restaurants along the beach and really enjoyed swimming in the lagoon pool.
We chose Seagulls as the place to stay based on a number of reviews that we had read. The thought of walking through 3 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens also appealed.
We were quite disappointed with our stay.
Our room and decor reminded us of a holiday camp room -like those offered by Butlins (for those old enough to remember) in the 80's. It was dark, some fittings were loose and it was noisy.
The pathway to rooms was just outside the window and people cannot help but have a quick peek to see what is happening in your room.
The pool area is very nice and is surrounded with nice plants and shrubbery. However, to describe the hotel as being surrounded by 3 acres of landscaped garden is misleading. The WHOLE area taken up by the hotel, gardens, car park etc probably accounts for 3 acres and the gardens probably account for 20% of this.
The positives for us in the Seagulls were the staff in the bar, the receptionist and the room service but I have to say that we would not be rushing back there.

We had never been to Townsville before and chose Seagulls from the internet.

Be warned, Townsville is a little like the Islands in that everything happens but they take a little time - especially taxis at the airport, food at some places, and things close early including the food at Seagulls.

With kids we found walking and buses impractical and after a couple of days hired a car.

We loved Townsville tho', the Strand is brilliant for kids, the cafes and food everywhere is yum and we all enjoyed the trip to Magnetic Island - took the car and did some great snorkling at Alma Bay.

As for Seagulls, the rooms and facilities are not quite the 4 star standard they are in some places, but it is nice.

Sadly, we hit it when the weather was unseasonally cool and the pool was freezing, it is so heavily shaded that if it isn't very sunny then brrr.

The other downside is that the restaurant and pool are used for public functions, so you may slope off down to the pool in a bikini planning to read a book only to find it surrounded by people all dressed up sipping cocktails and listening to speeches. (Weddings ok, but the day we arrived it was a 'wake'!!)

It is this that will stop us returning, we understand they have to do it, but there are places on the beach and in Palmer St where we wouldn't need a car and would only be with other holiday makers and the pools get all day sun.

First trip to Far North Queensland - it was a great experience.Travelled by Sunlander (train with sleeper)Journey was 24 hours from Gold Coast but travelling with friends we passed the time quite easily. Take a pack of cards.
Compartments are very comfy, but sleeping can be a hassle, and drop down bed (one up one down for a couple) requires quite an effort if you are in the top bunk. Train staff are very helpful and are obliging with information on most topics regarding location of train, and services available.
We were met at the station by courtesy bus and taken to the Seagulls resort. This was at 8.30 am and only had to wait 30-40 minutes for our rooms to be ready. We occupied room 102 on the ground floor. Room was very clean, had double and single bedding. Although some years old, our room had been recently refurbished, and bathroom was a good size, along with a nice modern shower. Fittings were chrome,and/or pewter type, with taps easy to turn, which is very helpful when arthritis is in the fingers.Rooms were serviced daily and fresh towels available on request. Pool towels were provided in addition to bath towels.
Tea/coffee making facilities were provided along with biscuits.
Bed was too soft for me, but alot of people prefer this type of bedding. Room is airconditioned and also has ceiling fan. Bathroom also has exhaust fan too which operates with the light switch.Small fridge, good hot water supply & pressure. Two pools locatated in a tropical surrounding, plus gas bbq available.
In addition Austar is connected (limited selection though)
Reception staff were most attentive, courteous and very helpful. Check in only took 3-4 minutes.
Our package included a ferry trip to magnetic island -15 min, then a 3 hour bus trip over the island. Also we had a full day trip to Charters Towers, and included morning tea, a huge gourmet beef burger and fish & chips or pasta dishes at a restaurant lunch (multiple choice of 3 meals), afternoon stop at hotel for cool drinks. Visited the Venus battery where gold was extracted from ore up to a few years back. Also visited old Charters Towers sstock exchange. (Never knew it existed)
Although the resort is a fair way from the CBD, and us without transport, we relied upon the courtesy bus which was great as they visited most tourist attracions around the city. Last pick up was around 4.30 pm and taxis were plentiful and reasonably priced. Security mesh was on all windows which was very safe feeling.
Anyone wishing to visit Townsville should endevour to arrange a package deal, as it is the only way to go. In addition a full buffet breakfast was in the deal. Snacks are available at the restraunt for lunch, and a good menu is available for dinner and is licensed. Evening meals are fairly pricey and we ate at the Casino, Sizzlers and Cowboys leagues club.
A great experience. (Sorry no photos as our record is on video)

Stayed there last weekend for Fri/Sat. I can apprecaite it is an old hotel, and in the process of renovation, so here are my thoughts.

Positives:
* Room: the superior room I had booked has been recently renovated and was lovely. Flat screen TV, comfie bed and pillows, nice bathroom.
* Reception: really helpful and lovely, smooth checkin.
* Landscaping was gorgeous around the pool area.
* Newspaper every morning.

Negatives:
* Bar: very slow service for drinks - gave up after 15mins on the Sunday afternoon and went back into town.
* Food at Bar: 30 mins to get a bacon sandwich with 10 chips on the side on the first day, 45 mins the next (but a few more chips!!!
* Sand Flies: the mangroves being close by, the previous owners used to smoke the area on a weekly basis. I got eaten alive within teh first hour there, and only after requesting bug spray did the bar staff put out smudge pots to keep the biters at bay.
* Room Location: At teh top of old cement stairs that echo whenever someone steps on them, at the bottom of the stairs, the entry to the pool area and the joy of listening to the gate close every 10 mins and slam/rattle away. The only way to the bar/restaurant area was through the pool - so it was rather well frequented (and there were functions on both nights, so well travelled until quite late)
* Blankets: Townsville is having its coldest winter ever...I had to beg an extra blanket.

We felt the resort was pretty great on the whole.
The rooms are very modern and well equipped. My only concern was the noise, we were initially allocated a room which was not suitable, but were moved on request. The reception staff are very nice. The location is a little out of town, there is a courtesy bus, but stops before anything starts!

Go to magnetic island. You wont regret it.
Its fantastic.

This lovely little resort is one of the nicest spots in Townsville, close to the beach (mangrovey but nice for a walk) and a short taxi ride into town (or a 45min stroll along the strand). The palm-fringed pool and bar/restaurant have the feel of an oasis, while the rooms we stayed in were clean, bright, comfortable and well-serviced.

That's the good stuff. What struck me most about this place, however, was the irksome sense of lost potential. Management seem content to run it to local standards of service (read: delightfully friendly inefficiency), which presumably works for them, as those comfortable with such standards keep coming back. But it could be so much more:

On arrival, the girl on the front desk, clearly a bright but inexperienced worker, bumbled her way unsupervised through check-in. We were put into the wrong room, requiring a shift the next day.

Later in the stay, we went to the bar at happy hour, enquiring as to the selection of cocktails and (as my wife was pregnant) 'mocktails'. 'What's a mocktail?', asked the bargirl. I let that one pass and asked for an orange juice for my wife, and whatever the lady could recommend in the way of a cocktail. 'Um,' she said, 'whatever you can tell us how to make'.

One day at breakfast, I ordered eggs benedict as advertised. It came as 2 ring-poached eggs cooked rubbery, on uncooked english muffins, with lukewarm hollandaise. It was barely edible.

There are more examples, but you get the idea. If only the service delivered on the promise of the beautiful grounds and rooms! Clearly, that is not a priority for the management. Unless it changes, we won't be coming back.
