Central location, excellent value. Overlooks the marina. Ask for the 9th floor, excellent views. For one who complains, I had none !
Close to the SHAMROCK HOTEL, lively and excellent value food.

We travelled to Townsville from Mackay for a 4 day stay over New Years. The 4 hour drive north was beautiful, but not a lot of places to stop and look around apart from just getting fuel and a rest stop.

Townsville itself is beautiful, much better than when I was there 13 years ago. It's been done up quite nicely and a lot of areas are now a lot safer.

The main part of town is the Flinders Mall area. The mall is terrible, empty and run down. They are in the process of redoing the whole area so I would suggest not bothering wandering down it unless you have nothing better to do. A few little clothes shops for women with some good clothes, but if you want shopping go to the Stockland Shopping Centre nearby (8 mins by car, bus services available - there is an info centre in the Mall).

Then there is Flinders Street East which is where a lot of bars/nightclubs etc are. This would be the place for the younger crowd to go to have drinks and a good night out. The Bank is apparently one of the most popular places.

The main area near the beach is the Strand. This is a 2km or so stretch from near the end of Flinders Street all the way north to Kissing Point and beyond. For those with small children who are wanting to be really close to the beach, I would suggest staying somewhere on the Strand, as you can walk across the road to the swimming enclosures, and up the far north end is the Rock Pool which was really lovely.

Jupiters Casino and Accommodation is about 3 minutes drive from the south end of the Strand (4 minutes from town) and seemed quite nice. We played some blackjack and roulette and had a good time. The walk from the Casino into the main part of town or the Strand would take about 20 minutes or so.

Across the river about a 5 minute walk from the Mall is Palmer Street. This is a great strip of restaurants with italian, greek, chinese, tapas and plenty of other little restaurants and pubs.

It is on this street where the Quest Apartments are situated, along with a few other blocks of apartments. There are more going up in this area also so it's becoming quite a good little spot.

In the Quest we had a 1 bedroom apartment with full kitchenette. We were in room 606 and had a view facing east over the small marina on the river and out towards the casino, with the hotel pool directly below. The way the hotel is built I think all of the rooms face east as the walkways are on the west side of the building, and the building runs north to south.

The apartment was lovely, simply decorated, but very comfortable. Plenty of room for the 2 of us, and would suit up to 4 people as it had a fold out bed in the couch. Having a kitchen was great as we had breakfast in our room before heading out for the morning and had cheese and dips in our room late one night playing scrabble!

The Quest has a restaurant attached to it on Palmer Street (BistroOne) which provides room service. We didn't get room service but did have a snack at BistroOne and it was quite nice. The menu seemed quite extensive and would be nice to order in for a night. The restaurant MoMo's on the corner of Palmer and the main street back into town is very nice also.

Other things to do:

A day/overnight trip to Magnetic Island is a must. We didn't have enough time but will go up again to do just Maggie (kayaking, snorkelling, diving, fishing, walks etc).

Drive up/walk up to Castle Hill, right next to the middle of town. It's a great view and a great walk.

Go to the Botanic Gardens - they were just lovely and had some birdlife on display and beautiful displays of tropical trees and plants.

Shopping at Stockland and Domain Central (close to each other).

Walk along the Strand and swim at the protected swimming enclosures. There are also heaps of really nice restaurants (the Watermark is where we had a lovely New Years Eve Dinner).

Overall, we had a great time in Townsville - very relaxing which is just what we were after. It is a great place to relax, but we could easily have lived it up, or been there with children and it would have catered for us all.

We have stayed at the Quest on a number of occaisions over the past few years but after our last visit I am thinking that will book at other places in future especially if we only need a studio apartment or simple motel style room.

Gone are the days were we are travelling with a group or with kids so we really don't need an apartment or kitchenette anymore. Therefore if you don't need apartment style accommodation then perhaps try elsewhere. There are alternatives in the same street as the Quest.

What we do like about this venue
- undercover parking, locked up at night
- great location nearby to excellent restaurants
- clean, comfortable room
- free hotel laundry

Things we don't like
- studio apartment kitechenette is very sparce
- internet is very expensive
- overpriced for simple lodging.

Four of us spent two nights in a 2 bedroom apartment (which is actually a one bedroom with an adjoining studio room and interconnecting door). Worked fine ... two toilets, two bathrooms, two balconies, one small kitchen area, and one large kitchen area.

We paid AU$240 per night (for the 4 of us) and yes ... you may find cheaper accommodation just down the road, but it doesn't have a balcony or a view ... (why not stay in the backpackers around the corner if all you want to do is save money?).

Very clean, free undercover parking, spacious, with a pool and BBQ area ... and the staff were most helpful (the manager actually escorted us out into the street one day to point out various restaurants.

The Quest is in a steet with quite a few restaurant choices, and if you can't find what you want there, just walk across the bridge (about 5 mins) to Flinders St which has a huge assortment of eating and drinking venues. Also, treat yourself to breakfast one morning at one of the 3 absolute waterfront restaurants/bars in the park along The Strand ... you may pay a dollar or two more, but the ambience and views of Magnetic Island will more than make up for it.

The only negative with our accommodation was that it was rather noisy late at night. We concluded that this would probably be the same with all accommodations in the area due to the close proximity to several backpacker hostels and various watering holes.

PS. If you are thinking of going to Magnetic Island for a day, you may consider taking your car on the car ferry. The overall price for the car and passengers is similar to what you will pay for a normal ferry trip and daily bus passes for four on the island (make sure you book your car in the day before).

I stayed here briefly for one night with my partner. The place was clean, spacious and convenient for Townsville centre. You are provided with a half kitchen and a nice balcony. We paid 135AUSD however the Ibis next door was available at 99USD so do a little shopping before you committ.

Clean and Convenient. Plenty of parking.

We stayed just 1 night at this property in a studio, which whilst very clean it was not actually totally self contained. The cooking facilities included a microwave, kettle & toaster. We paid $140 for the night & subsequently found a more affordable property with a better location & full cooking facilities.

My son and I had a two bedroom apartment. It was extremely spacious and each apartment had a balcony. The best location for eating out from fish and chips to divine dinners! We enjoyed the pool and excellent location. The apartments were fully self contained and I did some washing whilst we where there as well. It was a great break away. The staff were very friendly and I would thoroughly recommend this great property for a great holiday!!
