“Avoid & certainly not 4 star”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2011

I chose this hotel because it was 4 star rated & central location. I have stayed in 4 star and above in the UK and this is sadly lacking. I was staying with an Australian resident & even my friend said this sucks for 4 stars!! The smell other reviewers has suggested is correct, The staff on the reception are very ordinary considering I thought emphasis was placed on "Tourism". Bathroom bin was not emptied after first night as I was booked in for 2 nights and it was my time of the month. Pubic hair found on the tea spoon :(. Fridge leaking and the carpet was wet & seamed to be spreading. I started to wonder on my second day how fresh the bedding was as could detect a stale smell (it is not possible even in hot weather to keep the air con on as there is no personal temperature control so it does get very cold).
The wardrobe smelt stale and musty and I did not feel I could use it :(
I would consider spending a bit more for another hotel - definitely!!!!!

Good central location with above and under ground car parks and lifts to all floors...Initial impression of the room is good, but if you take a closer look room dusty and grubby...Fridge well stocked with drinks and snacks to pay for.....Adequate space and facilities, good comfy bed, with crisp linen, kettle, hair dryer, and iron and board.....however, stains on carpet, face cloth torn and very thin, bathroom shelf very loose, socket switches dirty, ....Front desk staff helpful and curtious, plenty of local area's to eat, and internet available , to pay for .......There is a swimming pool and other facilities we didn't have time to see or enjoy....I think this hotel falls a little short on standards for even a basic room.....Questionarre filed in and comments handed to front office staff....

Thank you for your comments, following some average feedback from our guests we have reviewed and subsequently overhauled our housekeeping procedures including a review of our cleaning agents. We have seen significant improvements in our guest feedback and in the general standards of our hotel. Our rejuvenation project has beun with Rydges Dream Beds now in all rooms, new linen and LCD's to follow.

Location OK but smell from lift and carpets repulsive, dirty linen on the floors of the hallways, room very old with cigarette burns in bedding, We couldnt stay and checked out immediately. Staff offered to move us to another room without even asking what was wrong with the room given. Not worth the Rydges name!

Thank you for your feedback. It is disappointing to note the issues you encountered during your stay. An overhaul of our housekeeping procedures has been completed and we are already seeing vast improvements in our guest feedback. Further additions to our rejuventation schedule are to follow including painting and a new restaurant concept. Rydges Beds and new linen has been rolled out into the rooms with further renovation planned later in the year.

Rob McGufficke.

Thank you for your feedback. It is disappointing to note the issues you encountered during your stay. While this repsonse is somewhat delayed, I can confirm that refurbishment has begun on the hotel. New Rydges Dream beds have been added to the rooms, and once the upgrade to our aerial system is complete new LCD TV's will be roll in aswell (july11).

We stayed at Rydges Townsville just for one night for a stop over. We have stayed at many other Rydges and assumed this hotel would be the same high standard as other Rydges hotels. How wrong we were! The man on reception spoke 3 words to us "Name, credit card,
sign here". He was extremely rude, we have never been to Townsville before so had no clue about anything, didn't offer any information, we had to ask him about breakfast and he pointed to the restaurant?? The rooms were absolutely disgusting, they look like something straight out of the 80s and they feel dirty as they are so old. The beds so uncomfortable. I read that they are refurbishing at
this hotel but i didn't see any evidence of this on any level. This hotel ruined our stay in Townsville and for the $170 per night price tag you wonder what you get for money. Total rip off. Do not stay here even if for one night!!! This hotel ruins the Rydges name. Disgrace!

Hi Gunn11,

Thanks for the feedback, Rydges purchased the property 11 months ago and we are in the process of finalizing a refurbishment programme to commence in 2011. We have replaced the beds on two floors at this stage and have more on order for delivery in Feb 2011. We will keep updating TRIP ADVISOR as we roll out the refurbishment program. Once again thanks gain for your comments.

Cheers

My partner and I stayed in a 'superior' room on the top level. Great view and the room was gorgeous. However as some other travellers have pointed out, it could use a little updating. The TV was one of those old rear projection ones, and very small. The bathroom was a bit old which made it look dirty. We saw the aircon vent above the toilet, and it was covered in dust. But everything worked as expected.
The service was great. Reception was really friendly and helpful, as was every other member of staff I met along the way.
The bed was really comfy... lots of pillows. We had a great night sleep.
The location of the motel was right in the restaurant precinct, so we didn't have to go far for food. We also ate at the motel one night. The menu was a little limited, the food fancy, but very good quality and tasted fantastic. They have an extensive wine menu, and some great cocktails.
If you like going out and seeing what is around, the mall isn't too far to walk to, however because it was being updated, not a lot was open. However there were some great shops hidden away in arcades. The mall was only a short walk, and the museums were right across the river, and you could probably walk there too.
If you are up for shopping, I recommend jumping on a bus... the biggest shopping centre, a Stockland, is a bit far away. Reception had heaps of information, and even bus schedules which made getting around easy. They are very helpful and know lots of local information.
If you like hanging out in the motel and just relaxing, they have Austar in the rooms, and it is airconditioned, so it was a great escape from the humidity. If you like relaxing poolside, the pool here is great. They also have a HUGE spa. There wasn't lots of people around, so we had the whole pool and spa to ourselves. The only problem is, if you are a little self consious, avoid the pool during meal times as the restaurant overlooks the pool.
My recommendation is to become a Rydges Priority Member - you get a cheaper rate and some freebies, which help account for any short-comings you may find.

Stayed here twice now, and between both times (with more than 6 months in between them) the place hasn't changed at all. The room decor is dated, TV etc is all dated and mid 90s. The bathroom was small and pokey. Can hear neighbouring rooms showering or flushing toilet if you are in the bathroom. Bed was comfortable but the airconditioning was too cold (tried to turn up the heat but it seemed to not do anything - and there are notices directing you to NOT turn off the aircon) - and there were no extra blankets in the room so didn't sleep that well. Ate from the 'casual dining' room service menu the first night which was mediocre to put it nicely. Second night ate at the restaurant across the road (Tuesday) and it was half price pizza and pasta - very nice meal and great service (and a third of the price of the overpriced in-house restaurant). Breakfast is good - usual hotel buffet fare. Overall, it is a decent place to stay - great location and ok rooms. But it does need an update pretty urgently if it wants to stay competitive.

Hi

Thanks for your comments. We have employed a new Chef with considerable hotel experience and have a new room service menu for implimentation in December 2010. The rooms are due for upgrade in early 2011 and we are currently working through all rooms upgrading the airconditioning controllers. Once again thanks for your comments
