“Old rooms, stay elsewhere”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2010

Stayed at Rydges Townsville for 3 nights and was not impressed. I am a Rydges member and would have to say that Rydges Southbank is the worst one I have stayed at. Rooms are old, run down and smelly. Bathroom is from the dark ages. Beds are hard, old and need replacing to be up to standard with the better Rydges hotels out there (dreambeds). Service from front reception was rushed and rude (she was too busy talking to her friend at the time to answer any questions) Location is the only plus, the hotel is in the CBD and close to restaurants. Do yourself a favour if you are travelling to Townsville and stay at Hotel M or the Oaks.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments, Rydges Hotels and Resorts purchased the hotel in November 2009, we are currently in the process of working through refurbishment plans and hope to commence in the near future. As part of this refurbishment, the purchase of dream beds and new televisions will be mandatory.

In hospitality we are always aware of the need for excellence in customer service, and have completed 'High Profile Guest Service Training' to ensure all our guests receive excellent levels of service, Once again thanks for your comments.

We started off in 311, the air conditioner was leaking badly that the carpet was a puddle of water and the room started to smell. My initial complaint was treated lightly and the repair person told us to wipe the roof with a towel now and then. After discussing the problem “further” with the manager we were relocated to 611.
Most times we needed assistance from reception they were either not there or on the phone (and failed to acknowledge our presence) Saturday afternoon we (along with 4 friends) tried to get a drink at the bar/restaurant only to be told the area was closed and to go and get a drink from the mini bar in the room.

Overall the place is looking tired old and run down..the beds are less than average and on two occasions after being out all day we returned to our room (after 3 p.m.) and our room was still not cleaned.
We were disappointed with all aspects of the hotel especially considering it is a Rydges

Hi,

Thank you for your comments, We fully appreciate the value of customer service and are constantly striving to achieve this, clearly on this occassion we have failed to deliver on the high standards we set ourselves. Currently we are working through a refurbishment program, as part of this program, the beds will be replaced with our 'Dream Beds' along with this will be the upgrade of the look and feel of the room. We have commenced the moderisation of the airconditioning system to ensure that the condensation is kept to a minimum.

Once again thank for your comments, they are being addressed.

Stayed here in 2008, the b'fast buffet is ok but the service levels are rather average. The beds are poor, saggy and the bathrooms seriously dated.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments, we have since your last stay commenced the roll out of our Dream Beds' this is having an awesome impact on the look and feel of the rooms. While nothing special in itself, Rydges Southbank is a good option in Townsville for the price. It's located in an area with a few reasonable dining options, and just a minute or two's walk from the main part of town. There is a bit of street/pub noise on Friday night though, but that died off pretty early and didn't disturb my sleep.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, although the bathrooms are fairly ordinary. Be aware that, as with many tropical hotels, the airconditioning is strong and you'll freeze indoors and swelter outdoors.

If the price is comparable, it's a nicer place to stay than the hotels/motels in the centre of town itself.

Hi

Thanks for your comments, we are currently in the upgrade process so soon we will have the ideal location and a modernised hotel. Part of this process will be to have individually climate controlled airconditioning to allow each guest greater control of the temperature in their rooms.

stayed here for one night, and it served the purpose, somewhere to break up the drive from Cairns to Airlie Beach. Nothing great to say about the hotel, girl at reception was ok, room was bland, dated, noisy. Met our requirements which were just to sleep and leave but wouldn't stay here for any length of time.

We have just checked out of the Rydges South Bank and had a number of conflicting experiences.
1. our first room (707) was an executive suite - I found an empty wine bottle behind the drapes and smashed wine glasses in the cupboard. The front desk clerk was horrified and switched us to another room. (all good so far)
2. Next room (607) - much better, identical layout to 707, marginally cleaner, though the desk area was really grotty (management: inspect the desk phone), decently equipped bathroom. Best part: a really comfy bed. The room wasn't totally dirty but it wasn't actually clean either.
3. Very friendly, helpful front desk staff.
4. Restaurant: in a word... TERRIBLE. We were seated at a "window" seat - directly beside the front door. We had to "duck" each time outside hotel patrons accessed the restaurant. Also, we ordered a bottle of wine and were presented with a bottle that was actually $23 more than the one we ordered. When we confronted the waitress, she appeared sheepish - probably worried about having it come from her own pocket - and didn't offer to exchange it for the proper one. We didn't want to raise a fuss so accepted this bottle and paid the extra amount. Finally, our meals were far below average. As a couple, we travel about 120 days per year and dine out accordingly. This meal was far below our expectations.
5. Finally, the cost for wifi internet is outrageous. I am a Rydges Priorty member entitled to 50% off the price of internet but at a base price of $0.75 per MINUTE, this was outrageous! Fortunately I am a user of Jimojo wireless and was able to access their service at a fraction of the price.

In the future if staying at this hotel, I would suggest...
1. looking over the room thoroughly before checking in
2. forget dining in the hotel restaurant.... there are many other alternatives close by
3. Use an alternate internet source

I stayed here for 4 nights with my sister. The hotel is clean, in a great location and the staff are awesome. Check in was so easy, we arrived at the hotel at 10am and our room was already waiting for us even though check in isnt till 2pm. The staff at the front desk were friendly and extremely helpful.
The room (superior double double) was perfect and had everything we needed. The beds were very comfortable. The room cleaners were also great.
I was a little worried about staying here as I had read some bad reviews and that the hotel was old. I never had a problem with it and would recommend it to anyone
