Owner description: Just metres short of a mountain, Castle Hill is the giant pink granite monolith that stands proud in the centre of Townsville - a perfect place for visitors to orientate themselves. As well as offering vehicle access, Castle Hill provides a number of popular walking tracks, which are frequented by more than 2,500 locals a day! The 360-degree views of Townsville at the top are well worth the journey. Be sure to have a camera on hand, particularly for sunrise or sunset as these are photo opportunities which shouldn't be missed. As well as offering an iconic centre piece for the city and spectacular scenic views, Castle Hill has a significant history. The Hill's vantage was used by visiting American soldiers during World War II. According to local legend, the visitors famously offered to demolish the hill and use the rock to build a bridge to Magnetic Island. A World War II observation bunker sits on one corner of the Hill reminding visitors of Castle Hill's military history. Castle Hill facilities include car parking, public amenities, drink fountains and shaded seating to enjoy while taking in some of the best views of the city and across to Magnetic Island.

We went up the "Goat Track", a 1 in 4 climb. It's a popular track but the young & fit looked out for us oldies. A great relief to reach the end of the track then a short walk up the road to the summit for an expansive view to share with the wedding parties being photographed. We started up about 4pm and caught the sunset then a short time later the moonrise from the East. Definitely worth while. Long walk back down the road, about an hour for us and you have to look out for cars - there's no separate space for walkers. (And please remember that it's safer to walk facing the on-coming traffic rather than walk with your back to it as about half the people we passed did.)

A must do day or night
Suggest to walk in the morning or afternoon by one of the many tracks.
By car at night
Recommend that if you can do both and you'll see what you are missing out on when you're not living here.

Townsville CBD was built adjacent to the base of this rocky hill and has grown around it. It has 180 degree views of sea and islands, and to the rear a view of this fast growing city and the mountain ranges.

Beautiful by day, spectacular by night, a must-see place when visiting Townsville

Although road works were being conducted we were able to access the summit after some days and what a sight. Not to be missed. We would have liked to spend more time walking some of the trails but while the hill was closed we were unable to get to the top until the last minute of our holiday. But it was worth it. A must do for all travellers to Townsville.
