Owner description: Visit the Gold Coast City Gallery and come away feeling inspired and uplifted. We host over 20 local, national and international exhibitions each year in our three Gallery spaces, so there's always something new and fresh to see. Gold Coast City Gallery is one of Australia's most prominent public regional Galleries and serves a large population of approximately 500,000. Opened in 1986, the Gallery is funded by City of Gold Coast as part of The Arts Centre Gold Coast. The Gallery houses the renowned City Collection of contemporary and historical artworks documenting the character of the Gold Coast as well as the development of Australian art practice. The Gallery presents a diverse and dynamic program of exhibitions and events. These include local, national and international exhibitions that are generated by the Gallery or displayed as part of a touring schedule. The Gallery is also home to one of Australia's longest running art prizes, previously titled the Stan & Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize, it is now proudly supported by The Arts Centre Benefactor Program and called the Gold Coast Art Prize. Since 1968, the annual prize has provided an exciting survey of contemporary Australian Art. It is the Gallery's mission to continue to provide high-quality exhibitions and events for the people of the Gold Coast and to promote and encourage broader participation in the visual arts.

This gallery only has a modest amount of space in the Gold Coast Arts Centre but they used it well and there three interesting exhibitions to look at. One was a touring exhibition from the Jam Factory in Adelaide with a beautiful array of contemporary craft and glass work. The second was an exhibition of old watercolours and photos by an artist who had lived in the hinterland at the turn of the 20th Century. Wonderfully detailed paints and a great way to get a feel for the area's past. The third exhibition helped one understand the process of art making as it was focused on an artist's workshop that had been held on South Stradbroke Island nearby.

They also had an "after dark" talk on Indigenous art that I attended which was equally interesting.

For a city this size, the exhibits at the gallery are often a disappointment. Over the years, most displays seem superficial and trivial..., kinda like how outsiders view the Gold Coast in general. To see a great art gallery, head south about 60km to the Tweed River Art Gallery in Murwillumbah, NSW.

Great entertainment, great bar and selection of wines and champagnes. Staff was attentive. Bar food available which was great to have with your drinks if peckish. Plenty of parking spaces.

Saw a fantastic exhibition at this public art gallery. It was surround-sound with images of the individual members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra playing their instruments on separate screens that the viewer could manipulate. Inter-active and fantastic. Enjoyable. Nice work.

I took my wife to see a show recently and to avoid the traffic we decided to book at the Arts Cafe. Big Mistake, after waiting in line for around 20 minutes to order we waited another half hour before I enquired at the counter to get a time when our food would be ready. Shortly after complaining our food arrived. The beef stir fry had burnt meat, no sauce, dry inedible noodles and virtually no vegetables. My beef cheeks were cooked but thats where my praise ends its was a bland dish with no soul. The only saving grace was the very nice server who apologized and gave us our money back. Will never eat there again.
