St. Tropez Apartments

Reviewed March 16, 2011

I recently stayed at St Tropez with my partner; on arrival it was obvious that few of the advertised features of the resort were actually up and running- the website facilities list a spa (which was empty and had an ‘under maintenance’ sign on it) and a sauna (which had been turned into a staff store room) and undercover secure parking (which was shared with majority of close businesses and permanent residents therefore left us fighting for a car park each time we chose to leave the apartment- one time we even had to park in the local shopping centre car park and pay for parking)
As for the images on the website, I thought we had walked into the wrong ‘resort’ as in real life it looks nothing like the photos- I suppose they were taken when the resort was first built which would have to be many years ago. After being abruptly asked for a $200 bond which we weren’t made aware of prior to arrival, we were asked how many sets of keys we were after-which was pointless as there was only 1 set after all. We dragged our suit cases up 2 flights of stairs to our room- my stomach dropped when we opened the door to reveal a dim lit dump with an overpowering mouldy smell. On immediate observation these things were apparent: holes in the walls where pictures once hung, mismatched furniture some of which was broken, thick dust on lamps and other furniture, main lounge room/dining room light was blown, stained curtains in the lounge room and an uncomfortable rock hard bed. Since having saved up on a low income to pay for this almost $800 (+ $200 bond) 7 night stay, I was gutted and resulted to crying. After having unpacked and convincing myself that we had no other choice but to stay I had calmed down and tried to warm to the place. The first night was humid so we had to drag the mattress out from the bedroom into the lounge room in front of the air-conditioner- we woke up the next morning to a broken fridge (which had all of the groceries including dairy products and meat we had purchased the day before- now all spoiled) and a broken air-conditioner which just shut off mid functioning leaving us sweltering. My partner was looking at the cooling system outside when he found a used condom next to the unit- this was the last straw. I went to reception to alert them of all the issues we woke up to and was cut short and told that someone would be up soon to look at them- to which I asked if there were any other rooms that we could be moved to as I was highly unimpressed with the state of the current room which we had to spend another 6 nights in. The receptionist found us another 1 bedroom room with an air-conditioner but demanded a $50.00 cleaning fee due to an early departure from the first room. Normally I would have argued the cost and stated that it would’ve been nice for the first room to have been cleaned prior to our arrival in the first place or perhaps once in the last year- but I was offered another room and was afraid of losing it! The next room was on the bottom level on a different side of the ‘resort’ and had a much better appearance and was definitely cleaner which made for a more pleasant stay for the remainder of our time there, although I still wouldn’t recommend these apartments to anyone nor will I ever book through the Break Free company again. Oh and just to add to it, because we paid the surprise $200 bond in cash- the receptionist was clueless as to how they were going to refund it once the room had been viewed- and then decided to write down my partners bank details and told us they would have to deposit it into his account- which we still have yet to receive- overall I’m horribly disappointed.

the location is perfect if you are planning to go out to night clubs and arent expecting too much from the rooms. The room was dirty chips left under the couch and food in plain sight when we arrived. the receptionist were rude to us and were no help when booking the limo to the airport as they did it incorrectly and we almost missed the flight becaus of it. so if its a week for clubing stay here, if its good service you are looking for try somewhere else.

Sorry to hear about the bad customer service you received at St Tropez. This staff member has since left the resort shortly after your stay, new staff are very friendly and welcome guests with open arms. Housekeeping have also implemented stricter control measures to make sure this doesn't happen in the future. Once again sorry this has happened and please consider us next time your travelling to Surfers Paradise.

Regards
Jason Walk

We stayed here for 3 nights, after reading bad reviews, we were expecting the worst, however our apartment was more than adequate for us, we were back in Surfers after moving overseas and wanted to party!
Our apartment was very roomy with everything in it - kitchen, laundry, tv, plenty of beds, comfy lounge, 2 bathrooms and 2 verandahs.
Do not recommend staying in the front rooms if you are after sleep - too much noise from the clubs and passerbys, we didnt mind too much though.
We were given extra keys and allowed an extra carspace which was great.
Pool was nice, and everything about the apartment was clean if a little outdated.
Would stay here again if needed a 3 and 1/2 star apartment for a few nights with friends, but would request a room on the otherside, as it wouldn't be so noisy.

Thanks for the great feedback. We have been working hard recently to make St Tropez a wonderful experience for our guests. Whilst we are in the heart of Surfers Paradise we rarely get negative feedback regarding the street life. Next time you visit please request a room away from the street side of the resort and we will do our best to look after you.

My husband and I stayed here during our trip to Surfers Paradise. A list of Pros and Cons are below:
Pros:
1. The staff were competent and friendly. We arrived late in the night and late check-in went smoothly.
2. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Surfers Paradise. It is within walking distance from restaurants and shops.
3. Secure tandem parking is provided to hotel guests. This was a little annoying when all spots were full though!
4. A washing machine and dryer were provided at no extra cost.
5. The outdoor pool and spa were ok.
Cons:
1. The rooms were very dated. They were large but consisted of old furniture, floral bedspreads and smelt musky.
2. The bathroom was particularly bad. It was mouldy and looked rusty. The toilet itself was dreadful as was the shower.
3. The guest information booklets in the room were sticky and grubby.

Overall, I would not stay at this place again.

Thanks for the feedback. We constantly strive to provide the best customer experience, and your feedback has been welcomed. The apartments are privately owned and constantly being updated, and it was unfortunate that you were allocated one that was not up to your expectations. We would like you to revisit and see the changes that have been made since your last stay with us.

Sorry guys but I would not recommend this hotel. We asked to be moved to another apartment after one night because of all the mould in the place. On the celling, walls, toilet, and worst was on the curtains. Also the bench in the kitchen was falling to bits every time you closed a drawer. Receptionist said that they have had problems with this room before and that the curtains should have been changed. They told us that they will swap with another couple arriving that day. No one should have been put in that apartment for health reasons. It may be right in the middle of surfers Paradise but find somewhere else to stay. I am sending photos to the resort owners so that perhaps someone else doesn't have this experience.
