Surfers Paradise YHA at Main Beach
Reviewed October 2, 2013

I stayed three nights at the Surfers YHA and found a few problems with it. The hostel itself is too far away from Surfers Paradise so you cannot take full advantage of surfers without taking a bus into town. There is only four shuttles into tone and back a day and they finish at 4pm.

The hostels facilities are very tired and old compared to other YHA hostels I have stayed in. It is coming into summer now with average temps of 30*c and the mattress is covered in a rubber material which squeaks and rattles every time you move in the bed and they are not very comfortable. The bedroom & bathroom facilities are very tired and could both do with an update.

A massive positive for the hostel though is the staff. They are fantastic and always willing to help you out and made staying in the hostel acceptable.

The surrounding shops and restaurants are very high end establishments and are not suited to travellers wallets. There is a couple of bars on the wharf that do 5 dollars schooners for Carlton Draft which is a benefit.

Dear mjd6888,
Thank you for your feedback and the praise you gave our staff. We take all customer feedback very seriously and appreciate the time you have taken to write to us.

At outset I am disappointed to hear of the uncomfortable nights sleep you had due to the mattress protector, as this is not the usual feedback we received from our guests. Since your feedback I have spoken to the hostel manager and they have a covering around all mattresses for hygiene reasons. The hostel manager has discussed your feedback with housekeeping, who are in the process of checking all rooms to ensure the mattress covers are fitted correctly.

Thanks again for your feedback, it is a valuable tool, which assists us to monitor our performance.

Kind Regards,

Anouk

It is near the worlds which is why we decided to stay there. The hostel was fairly clean and not bad over all; the kitchen and bathrooms were ok. There was plenty of cutlery. However the walk to surfers is very long and not very well lit, so doesnt seem like the safest 45 min stroll. The internet was awful! bought an hour, only worked for 45 mins and wouldnt load internet pages. Skype was very sketchy, video didnt work at all. There were 3 computers but only 1 actually worked. It is kids friendly, so when there is a school trip (as there was when we stayed) it is a bit of a nightmare. Apart from the children it is very quiet in winter. We heard that surfers paradise hostels are much more lively.

A friend and I spent 4 nights in a Twin room (bunker bed; double bed below and single bed above).

We paid about A$80 for the room.

The room is very basic. It has a bunk bed; a wall fan; a table and 2 chairs. Carpet, furniture and wall paint are not things you'd to brag about. ;-)

We thought that it would come with an ensuite bathroom, but it didn't. We probably could have gotten that elsewhere at around the same price or maybe a little more. We use a common dorm bathroom. There are two at both ends of the property.

PLUSES:
- Great common kitchen with all the things you need to cook a nice meal
- Nice TV lounge
- Nice tables on the balconies to enjoy meals
- Close to McDonalds, restaurants (at the marina and a mall close by) and some shops (at the mall - higher end shopping)
- Situated at the Marina (jet ski, parasailing etc.) and very short drive to Sea World
- Close to the beach (but we didn't walk across the road to venture)
- Free parking
- Organised activities ($ extra)

MINUSES:
- No ensuite bathroom in Twin room
- Warm room (Spring time/Nov) from the sun directly shining into the room; warm even with the curtains drawn the whole day; small wall fan is hardly cooling the room. No air con (obviously).
- Have to drive to supermarkets and elsewhere
- No free WiFi

Service: AVERAGE (This is not a hotel so don't expect pampering)
Value: AVERAGE
SLEEP QUALITY: AVERAGE (a little warm even at night with the wall fan turned on the whole day)
CLEANLINESS: AVERAGE (Generally clean)
LOCATION: AVERAGE (We drive to most places; but other travelers by the bus)
ROOM: AVERAGE (Very basic)

OVERALL: AVERAGE
- Love the kitchen!
- Room is warm; be prepared to perspire a little in the Twin room.
- Common bathroom.
- Will stay here again if price is right and no other better alternatives.

It was the people here that made it a great experience. I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly and helpful the blokes that lived here where. Some had stayed for over 5 months, showing how comfortable the staff make you feel! The staff did everything they could to make my stay as comfortable as possible. And the view is nice from the balcony. 1min walk from the wharf, where its nice to chill. The beach is literally across the road and the hostel will you borrow body boards and fins ! :) It is awesome place I would defiantely stay again, on my next time in Gold Coast 5 stars for me

To echo many other reviews, the hotel is in a great location for beach-goers, but it's a good walk from the main town where the best bars and shops can be found.

We were unlucky with our room as the chap we shared with lacked an understanding of personal hygiene. This wasn't helped as there was no air con and just one fan. This was made worse by the fact that there was only one plug point - so it was either stay a little cooler or have cell reception.

As far as YHA's go, this is at the lower end of the scale.

Facilities included a TV area, kitchen and some relatively clean communal showers.
