“loved the huge rooms!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2008

I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at this hotel. Our room was HUGE, with a kitchenette and dishwasher, dining area, living room area and nice balcony. The staff was always extremely friendly and helpful. The pool was beautiful and breakfast yummy!

  • Liked — the huge bathroom
  • Disliked — no sun on the pool area

We stayed here for a week under the "Classic Holidays" banner - we had been in Surfer's the previous year and won a "free" week's accommodation in Surfer's. The be eligible you have to sit through two lots of adrduous and extremely pushy 'presentations' by Classic Holidays, which is a timeshare setup. The Australis Soveriegn was the "free" accommodation, which comprised a "one-off" booking fee of $175, and the cost of the unit was $350 for a week as the free accommodation offered didn't have cooking facilities which we'd requested. Add on air fares, car hire, food and general spending money and the free holiday cost around $1600.

Location: not wonderful - it was a bit of a hike to the beach and nowhere near the heart of Surfer's.

Staff: Average. They were pleasant enough but i can't say they went out of their way in the service provided.

Food/restaurant: Very poor. We had a full continental breakfast twice and never went back. The hot items were poorly cooked and swimming in fat for the most part. The scrambled eggs were dreadful. Milk for cereal was never cold and coffee (when there was any) was tepid at best.

Pool area: Quite good. Not outstanding but pleasant enough and the grounds are gardens were well kept and looked quite attractive.

Room: Very shabby and quite poorly cleaned. We had a one bedroom apartment and while spacious enough, the furniture was very old, outdated, chipped and broken and quite dirty. The kitchenette had extremely old applicances (the dishwasher was manufactured in 1983), the portable cooktop was so inadequate that we just didn't bother using it, and there were a very limited number of crockery and cutlery items. The laminate benchtop had huge chunks of laminate out of it, the cupboard doors had broken hinges, the carpet was very poorly patched, dirty and stained, and the antiquated room air-conitioner was putrid. Everything was dusty and grimy, the TV screen had been so badly wiped over that it was just a huge smear that you could barely see through. The bed was comfortable enough, the bathroom adequate but not particularly clean, although not disgusting.

Building: Again adequate but old and tired and way past its use-by date. The corridors on each level aren't airconditioned, and with no windows there was no air-flow, so the heat and humidity in the corridors hit you like a sledgehammer as soon as you got out of the lift. Add to that the fact that there is a garbage shute on each floor and the non-existant ventilation made it very smelly indeed.

Overall: The Australis Soveriegn advertises itself as "luxury" accommodation and it is rated 4 star, and this is so ludicrous it's almost funny. A week's accommodation in February would cost over $900 (depending on room configuration) and you can get MUCH better than this in Surfer's, even in February.

You get what you pay for i guess, and whilst certainly we got a week's accommodation in high season quite cheaply and all that is good. But overall value for money is really poor, considering the absolute proliferation of accommodation available in Surfer's. Look elswhere and get some value for your money.

  • Liked — The apartment was spacious and the bed comfortable
  • Disliked — The room and hotel overall is in desperate need of refurbishment. The cleaning standards were quite poor.

Put it this way, we booked this room last minute for $120 for one night, I was not exspecting 5 star, but it did market itself as a 4.5 hotel. Its not. I dont feel I have the right to complain as my parter said because the room was so cheap anyway. However my feedback is

-DONT stay here if you are use to luxury
-DONT make it a long stay, one night, okay its alright but I would not recommend for a holiday (we are from Brisbane so it was just a quick stop over)

We were given a ground floor unit, yey, great view over the car park and rusting old fans. There are signs all over the building telling you to lock your doors as the hotel has be robbed a number of times while guests were out.

The pool area is crap, not worth seeing and is not anything like they have on the website so please dont exspect that. The restaurant is always closed and only selling coffees.

The rooms are really old fashion.. green stained carpet, cane furniture, and the kitchen was as big as a kitchionette.

I think pay more for a longer stay and better value. Also location is too far to walk into Surfers

  • Liked — Nothing really....
  • Disliked — The view, the level, the pool, more and more......

We booked a 1bedroom apartment, and as soon as we walked into the room I was very disappointed. The room was tiny, the carpets had holes and stains on them, the walls were dirty, there was a horrible smell and the furniture was outdated.
We were really disappointed to the degree where we decided to go back to the reception and ask for our money back because the room was unsatisfactory. However thankfully we were offered a free upgrade, we took the offer and found the 2 bedroom much nicer and cleaner than the 1 bedroom.
Another problem I occurred whilst staying at the Australis Sovereign was that on a Friday or Saturday night if you move your car out of the car park it will cost $5 to get it back in because they use the car park for other people not staying at the hotel to park there cars while they dine at the restaurant. I refused to pay the $5 because no where on their website or brochure do they say you have to pay for parking.
On the positive side the pool and spa was excellent and found the staff to be quite helpful.
I have been back to the Gold Coast a few times since my stay at the Australis Sovereign and recommend looking in to other hotels.

Do not stay at this hotel, it makes faulty towers look good!!
This was our experience:
Staff were too busy with other booked events to worry about customer service to regular in house guests. We turned up on the Saturday night and all staff were busy at an in-house wedding function. The cook told us that there was no chicken or vegetarian options available but that he could probably do us a cheese toastie if we were hungry.
Reception used the in-house PA speaker system (to all rooms) at 8:15 on Sunday morning to ask for somebody to shift their car from the front driveway.
In a seperate incident the in-house PA speaker system beeped with front desk staff announcing "Management would like to advise," and then cut off completely, we thought it was just another announcement to get people to shift their cars and completely ignored it. 1/2 hour later they came back on the PA to announce that the fire alarm was over and that the fire service now declared the building safe, so if you had left your rooms you could now go back. My wife and seven month old son had never even left their 6th floor room at all !!

  • Disliked — Their customer service attitude was abismal, their continual explanation was sorry were really busy

We stayed at the Australis for a weekend getaway. We were looking for something within walking distance to the main part of town and reasonably priced - without doubt the Australis delivered. The accommodation is basic but spacious, it is in need of a refurb but for the price you really couldn't complain, the room was extremely comfortable. Breakfast and parking were included in the price and the breakfast selection was excellent. The staff were both friendly and helpful. We would definitely return.

When we got to this hotel we were greete dby a friendly receptionist in a bright and spacious lobby, who told us that our room had been upgraded! We stayed in an apartment type room with seperate bedroom and balcony which was lovely, the room and bathroom were very spacious and clean couldn't really ask for more. The hotel has its own restaurant and pool and is in a good location for the shops and nightlife in the gold coast. Overall would definintely book this hotel again as enjoyed my stay so much!
