Excellent stay at Crown Plaza

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 27, 2019
The staff were very helpful and professional.
The room was very nice. I had an end room, and the views from the balcony the side and the front were beautiful.
As an American, I missed have a coffee pot in the room. Tea service is available and I was able to get percolated coffee in the restaurant each morning.
I loved how close the hotel is to the beach.
The biggest issue I had was that I could hear everything outside my room very, very well. I could hear the magpies at 5 in the morning. I could hear movement in the room next door, and I heard a very loud crash during the middle of the night from somewhere on my floor. If you’re wanting sound proof rooms, this may not be the hotel for you.

We stayed here for 4 weeks to simply chill and had a great time. We were upgraded to a suite on 23rd floor fronting the ocean with views to the countryside as well - very pleasant. The furnishings in both the bedroom and living room/kitchen, although dated are very comfortable and functional with good sized TV in each room. A large balcony extends across both rooms with balcony furniture basic but adequate. The king bed was very comfortable with great pillows. The bathroom is very large with spa bath, plenty of bench space marble flooring and wall tiles and spacious separate shower. No noise from the corridor at all. Room maintenance was efficiently carried out daily at varying times and the maintenance personnel were very friendly.

The buffet breakfast is very generous and includes a range of both hot and cold dishes, the food was fresh and very adequate. Coffee is served or you can make your own. There were often many guests but this caused us little waiting time.

The Relish Restaurant is pleasant to sit in the lobby area both during the day and evening although with a restricted menu. We did not go into the main [breakfast] area of an evening as it lacked any atmosphere. The Tavern is a pub which is part of the hotel but accessed from outside, a very short walk, with a normal pub menu, very friendly, efficient service and we used it regularly.

The good sized pool is set in well maintained landscaped surrounds with plenty of pool lounges and other seating which was very pleasant to relax around although the weather was a bit cool.

Checking in and out was very efficient, all details were correct.

The staff throughout at reception, the restaurants and maintenance were very friendly, extremely pleasant and made our stay very enjoyable.

Room tip: High floor ocean view

I have stayed in this Hotel for 5 nights during Aug 2019.

Check-in: When I arrived, the room was not ready and I have to deposit my luggage bags with the reception. When I returned later in afternoon, reception staff informed me that room was ready and all my luggage bags are already in the room. However these bags was not in the room and I have walk down to reception requesting for the luggage which take sometime before the reception staff is able to locate them. In short, don't communicate the wrong message to the visitor if you are not sure where are the luggage bags.

Location: Outside the main crowded areas such as Surfers Paradise Blvd (where many shops and fun place to be). Require 25-30 minutes walk to the main tourists Surfers Paradise Blvd area. Surrounding the hotel has very little shops/Restaurants. So you might need a car if you intend to stay in this hotel. However you are still able to access the beach by walking 5-10 minutes.

Room: Look very 80's. Marble floor for the shower room, carpet for the bed room area. I believed the tower that I have stayed in was from another hotel that Crown Plaza acquired as I can see logo of seashell printed on the windows. I have requested a room with ocean view and sofa bed. View was a disappointment as there are a few high rise building just in front of my room. I can't have any clear view of the ocean from my room at all. I have noticed the view from the door way facing inland looks more impressive instead. I am able to sleep quiet good during night time as I can listen to the sea wave while I sleep. In the morning, the wild birds would start singing just outside the balcony.

Room Cleanness: Saw bird dropping on the room balcony area during 3 of my 5 nights stay. Room housekeeping seems to think bird dropping is ok, but this can be consider a health hazards in my country (My room number is 2018 on the Gold Tower). In additional they did not bother to provide new bathing lotion everyday. I have to call house keeping almost everyday requesting for them.. (Come on.. I am there for 5 nights stay and hotel cannot expect me to use the same small bottle of bathing lotion for all 5 nights).

Breakfast: Typical American Breakfast buffet with some Asian Fried-Rice and Congee selection. Fruits was definitely mixed with "sugar water" to make them sweat. During breakfast, you will also noticed many Asian tourist from same tour group going after the same type of food. So be prepared some crowds during breakfast.

Welcome drinks: I was presented with 2 welcome drinks coupons during check-in as I am a IHG member. However they didn't let me know the bar counter closes around 9pm. On one nights, when I arrived at 9:40pm with the coupon, the staff told me to come back another day as they have already closed the bar. All i wanted was to have the beer to bring back to my room and yet they refused me on this. I can see the beer behind the bar and yet was refused with the drinks. Quiet disappointed as I realized the staff cannot even just give me the beer bottle....

Summary: Will I returned??? Most likely not as I don't think this hotel meet up the IHG Crown Plaza experience when I compare to other IHG hotels.

Room tip: The view are not good during my stay.

Dear KC_Altas,

Thank you kindly for taking the time to share such a detailed and valuable review with us. I want to start by saying how pleased I am to read that you had a pleasant night sleep and were able to experience some of our beautiful native wildlife during your stay with us. I am disappointed to read on and hear of your frustration with things like miscommunication and our bar operating hours. We do our absolute best to ensure the correct messages are relayed to all guests during their stay and on this occasion it would seem we have missed this opportunity. With regards to the bar closing at 9:40pm I apologise and will certainly be passing this feedback along to our Food and Beverage Manager for review. I appreciate your feedback regarding the occasional wait times at breakfast due to some of our many tour groups, the hotel has over 360 rooms across two towers and we do regularly take on large overseas tour groups, allowing them the chance to stay in a large group and enjoy the beautiful Gold Coast together. I hope on this note you understand that there can be extended wait times at the large breakfast buffet. I also understand that we are not located in the heart of Surfers Paradise but this allows for much quieter surroundings and with the local light rail right on our door step most guest are thrilled to catch the tram 2 or 3 stops to be right in the middle of Surfers Paradise. With all this in mind and a sincere apology for our short comings, please if your travels ever bring you back to Gold Coast, feel free to contact Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise directly and allow us the opportunity to show you we can and will do better. Thank you again for your time and we truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back again soon.

Let’s start with what I liked before what I didn’t... This hotel has excellent location to public transport with cascade gardens tram stop across the road perfect for where I had to be at the convention centre! All staff friendly when spoken with and great food! X2 free drinks also!

I picked this hotel over a apartment that I usually stay at as it is shown as a 4.5 star hotel & the price of this vs the apartment unserviced was the same so I picked CP. sad to say I’m disappointed in this hotel chain and won’t be staying again or recommending it I expected better.

On arrival I was upgraded from a queen room to a king SUPER, view over the pool and tram stop, but I before on the day on checkout after breakfast showed reception staff photos of my room - the curtains in detail, I don’t know if it’s mould or sun staining but if you were inspecting rooms you’d not miss this, yes I have photos to show as well as the ripped curtains (all right where you open/close them) I had to get mini bar guy to help me with the jug just “push” to open it to fill with water, um no push it and pull. The shower head if you twist it water comes spurting out from where the head meets the pipe. (Also advised reception) interesting carpet that looks majorly stained. Mascara or something stains on pillow cases & sheets - where you make the bed & I sleep again shouldn’t have missed this! Please see photos - also took these with Gold Coast icon Qdeck in the background so you can’t say it wasn’t your hotel. I couldn’t make the air con get hot even at 27 degrees it was cold.

Breakfast - I didn’t add a continental or anything so both times that was a issue, paying also a issue the 2nd time as I had to charge to my room then I paid reception as they couldn’t change my $$ would have thought you’d have enough to do this.

Dinner - loved this food at relish
The tavern I avoided even tho the steak deal was amazing but a woman on her own at night to a gaming bar yeah no thanks.

Dear mystiknz,

Thank you for choosing to stay at our hotel and its encouraging to know the visit started off so positively - our amazing location, room Upgrade, free drink vouchers and most importantly a warm welcome from our friendly staff.

I sincerely apologies for the room maintenance lapses you encountered during your stay. It is extremely disappointing that we let you down with issues which were preventable, unacceptable from a team that prides itself on attention to detail, and to ensuring accommodation is well presented and maintained. Stayed here for 3 nights with a friend. We were allocated a room on the 20th floor with lovely views of both the river and ocean. The balcony had a gap in it so I definitely wouldn't recommend for small children. Room was clean, well-appointed and a reasonable size. The bathroom was also a good size, with separate large shower and deep bath. A couple of tripping hazards - lip between bathroom tiles and carpet and a stopper between bathroom door and toilet. I'm sure a few people have stubbed their toes! The linen was of very good quality and the pillows very comfortable. Surprisingly, the tv was small, with a poor quality image and difficult to navigate (couldn't locate any instructions). Although we did not come to watch tv, we were on a girls' trip and wanted to relax and watch some TV before bed. Buffet breakfast was pretty standard, nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately my very first mouthful was of a literally frozen hash brown! I promptly advised the duty manager who went and told the chef but didn't actually apologise. The hotel is situated towards the Broadbeach end of Surfers Paradise. It's about a 15-20 min walk into Surfers. The Florida Gardens light rail stop is right out the front of the hotel but we managed to walk up and back each day. Overall a good hotel at a reasonable price, a few things could be improved.

A workmanlike place that carries on doing what is does. Staff are nice even if they won't serve whisky without ice. The views of the ocean or mountains can be good. Location is central. The place could do with a refurbishment and this trip I was sad to see the wine-tasting restaurant is now only available for private functions. But that gives you two other restaurants to choose from, and the seedy tavern attached. The price is affordable.
