“mixed feelings”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2005

We had been using the Sun City for the last 5 years, generally twice a year. I have mixed feelings about this place. Love the building and location - just away from the noice of surfers but close enough to walk to if you want to. The facilities and the room sizes are fabulous. Up until 1 year ago, I would also say that the decoration and funiture and fittings are great, but I have noticed the wear and tear. When we were there last time, the bed is no longer as comfy and the sofas are getting very dirty.

I did speak with the resort and the issue they have is that the rooms are individually owned so if the owner is not willing to pay for renovation, you are stuck with an old room.

I know for a fact that there is a room up on 33rd floor that is owned by a wellknown Aussie and is well presented and the room next to where we stayed was freshly painted and lovely. So good luck.

We stayed 3 nights here in a family 2 bedroom august 2005, very spacious with good facilites but the rooms could do with a bit of an overhaul if they are to live up to there 4 star standard. Great facilities for adults and children in a good location. Would definitlety stay here again. But dont go here for luxury.

this is me writing my reveiw from a couple of years ago. I REALLY loved it i loved the pool, the slides ect. The rooms were so nice. I've been to so many Gold Coast hotels in the past and none of them have been so good. It was handy having a pool open until midnight so you could swim alot, it had good food and i loved how pretty it was. Im going there again next week to for the first time in years, i hope its as good as it was before.

We arrived at Outrigger Sun City, for a seven night stay, to find that they did not offer non smoking rooms, let alone non-smoking floors. This was despite assurances from our travel agent. Hotel staff claimed it was something to do with residents owning the apartments. Pretty average situation for an international chain.

We awoke the next morning at some ungodly hour (well before 6am) with the sun streaming in the windows. Our room only had lace curtains and there was no blockout. Staff at reception assured us it would be fixed while we were out that day. We returned to our room to find that it hadn’t been fixed. We were told it was going to be fixed again. It wasn’t. We spent a couple of nights in that room before someone decided they could shift us to another room to fix the problem.

We then got new room cards that didn’t open our room door, then one that wouldn’t work the lift. According to staff it was my wife’s fault because she had the card in her handbag with her mobile phone. Highly unlikely.

Our accommodation package included breakfast, but the restaurant staff didn’t have our names recorded on the list for the first 5 days of our stay. So they had to verify our claim with reception each morning. I wonder if that was as tiring for them as it was for us?

Breakfast was acceptable, especially if you like the “all you can eat” thing. However, for excellent food and great coffee you would be much better off checking out the French café nearby on the Esplanade.

There were some good things about the Sun City. Central location and the pools and spa were good, as was the gym. Kids were having fun on the waterslide and there are tennis courts, video games and stuff like that. If you got an accommodation package with breakfast, combined with the facilities, and I expect it would be a good choice for a family holiday. Well, maybe if the family were all smokers…..

The staff were generally friendly, but they had poor attention to detail and kept committing to things without following through. I did feel for the staff as they appeared very busy. I suspect that poor management and understaffing were to blame for many of the problems we had.

Did I expect too much? We had just come from a week in Port Douglas at the Hibiscus Gardens Spa Resort which was outstanding. The previous year we had stayed at the Marriott Surfers Paradise Resort, which was exquisite. The service at both these hotels was beyond all expectations. The Sun City suffers very badly in comparison.

Direct comparisons may be unfair as the Outrigger was substantially cheaper than both of these hotels, although we had a hotel style room at the outrigger, compared to suites at the other two. The reality is that the Outrigger could be a very satisfactory hotel. But only if it was run better. Much better.

My husband and I just got back. We stayed here from Febuary 8-11. We had a 3 bedroom apartment for just the 2 of us. It was GREAT! I loved the spaciousness. We stayed on the 22 floor. The views were incredible. We had views of everything. I would highly recommend this hotel for families. It is centraly located just a short walk from just about everything. We also enjoyed the breakfast buffet. The evening people are great. Scott was wonderful and very helpful. I cant say the same about the day folks. They weren't horrible just not as willing to help. The halls dont have A/C but I guess its not horrible. Right now the indoor pool is being remodeled but will be available soon. The out door pool was great. I plan on returning with my entire family.

My boyfriend and i stayed at the outrigger for our 2 year anniversary. Let me tell you it was the most luxurious hotel i have ever stayed at. We booked a hotel room which is all we really needed as we were only staying there 3 nights we we were probably going to eat out and wouldnt need a room with a kitchen. As we stepped into the hotel we were both amazed, the amazing inca theme it had...and the pools were awesome, they were open till midnight so even after dinner we came back and had a swim.....with the palms trees everywhere you feel like your in a different world, secluded amounst the greenery. With our package we got breakfast every morning, so it was great waking up and going straight to the restauarant to all you can eat breakfast. THe staff are very friendly and there werent too many kids around. It was a very welcoming experience - we have even booked to go there again in February for my bday and we cant wait! Highly recommended!!!
