Good food at a great price - every day they have half price lunches. Great location next door to the Q1

“Very poor experience”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

My mum, myself and her 5 friends (who had flown down from North Qld) had a booking at Hanazono for us all to enjoy their first teppenyaki experience (I have been to a different teppenyaki venue before). As my Mum was so keen for everyone to have a good time, as part of her booking she made special mention that the ladies had not experienced teppenyaki before and would appreciate a good show. We were staying at Q1 and decided on getting the voucher they offered, but I myself went and checked with Hanazono that the voucher still entitled us to the teppenyaki 'show', and the management lady agreed. We were a bit disappointed that you could only try one type of meat (you had to choose in advance, instead of getting an array of different types). We then went and sat at our table. The chef introduced himself and he put out plates. He dig a very quick throw up of the salt shaker into his hat. THAT WAS IT. He cooked the food with absolutely zero 'flair', no tricks, no involvement (barely talking) with us. He miscounted plates only to realise at the end that he had forgotten one of the ladies, so she had to eat hers separately once we had almost finished. At the end, he spelt out 'thank you' in salt and left. Having been to a proper teppenyaki myself, I was embarrassed for the table that this was all they got to see. There was no interaction with us, games, or skills put on show. We thought we may have expected too much and that this was a different type of teppenyaki - but to make us feel worse, we then sat and watched every other table experience a full show with interaction. Another couple from Melbourne were sat at our table and they were equally disgraced at the 'experience'. To be fair, the food cooked was very good, but we didn't go to a normal restaurant, we went to Teppenyaki! We asked the lady serving our table for an explanation, only to be told that she hadn't worked here long so told us to go up to the counter (instead of her maybe getting management for us!?) Mum was so disappointed that we did both go up to the counter afterwards to ask for an explanation from the management lady. The lady agreed that there was a special note on Mums booking. She agreed that yes you didn't get a good show, because he was too busy for time. She then asked us for $16 for corkage (we brought a bottle of champagne that we opened ourselves and poured ourselves). We didn't oppose to paying corkage, but after such a disappointing experience and a disgraceful excuse provided for it, it was a further insult to be hit up for $16 when we paid so much already, only to be let down. The experience was poor, and the customer service was worse. To be too time poor to give what is paid for (especially with a special request placed - and its your core business!), was a very poor reflection on their business.

“Nice night out”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Booked a family meal and arrived at the restaurant. The hostess was a little funny as we wanted to sit in front of the chef and she wanted us to sit at the side and we were the first to the table so I hardly thought it mattered. Anyway we ordered the food, 3 chicken in one type of sauce and 1 chicken in a different type of sauce. The show was good, not the WOW I have seen before in these places but it was entertaining non the less. All 4 chicken dishes were the same so they got the order wrong but the food was nice. Overall an average night out but nothing special.
