I first stayed here in April/May 2010 after reading about it in Lonely Planet. I was indeed picked up from up the road in a rusty old limo, which was a nice touch.

The rooms are apartment style, cosy and social, but unfortunately the room with the beds in is tiny, 4 were squeezed into a room that would struggle to accomodate 2 people in there. There was no room for bags. The bathroom is also tiny, as is the kitchen (which was the worst equipped kitchen I have come across, there was literally about 3 things). However when I asked the staff at reception they got me a couple of items.

There is a very small pool where people watch movies and the staff have something for you to do every night, usually involving food and/or going out which is good. Unfortunately the reknowned Surfers nightlife is quite poor, in the 3 times I have been only 2 bars I have been in are busy and decent (not the hostels fault though).

The staff were mostly friendly. The male staff were only ineterested in chatting up the girls but the female staff were all very friendly and social. There was also a minivan cinema where you could watch one of many DVDs for free.

When I returned for a night in October (friends were staying there) I was disappointed to find that the movie nights had stopped, the minivan was gone, the DVDs were gone and the limo was no longer available. The guy behind the desk was friendly and honest and there was a cheap pizza night that involved a lot of pizza for what you paid for. The regular nights out (with a free drink) still occurred but the rooms were just as tiny as ever.

A good place to stay with a group of friends and if you want to go out but not great if you want space, privacy or like to cook.

A quick note on Surfers - it is not good for Surfers and it is not a Paradise. It is a place for shopping and drinking. Very shallow but still a place to see. The beach is lovely but sadly ruined by the constant drilling and banging of the multiple skyscrapers continuously and pointlessly being built on the coach. Make sure you head to the outskirts as well.

Sleeping Inn, Surfers Paradise is quite close to the centre of town and has a useful map of the town and where to catch the theme park buses etc but to be honest I was not very impressed with the hostel itself. The staff when we checked in where friendly but did not show us about the hostel or tell us much about the activities they offered. I was looking forward to the daily dive in movies and the free limo pick up but unfortunately got neither!
The apartment style accommodation is nice and ensure that not too many people share the kitchen and there were two toilets which was great, but the shower was filthy and I am not convinced it was cleaned the whole time we stayed there (4 nights).
The pool is small but seems clean, although I didn’t use it and the all you can eat pizza night is well worth the $6!

We paid prior to our arrival by credit card. My husband Specifically asked for a private room.
We arrived and were walked up dodgy stairs to what was supposed to be our PRIVATE BEACHSIDE ROOM. Apparently not.
It was a small room far from the beach full of people one of which was occupying the entire couch by sleeping on it.
We were shown to a tiny bedroom with a bunk bed which had what looked like stale sheets which hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. The place had not been maintained at all, with what looked like dog eaten chairs and a very messy environment.
We have stayed at other hostels during other trips before and had never had such a terrible encounter. We went down stairs to ask for a refund and were treated disrespectfully, we were not given back our money back, however we will be refuting this charge on our credit card. We ended up staying else where.

No lights leading towards our room which was on the first floor, very dangerous. Facilities were great. No air con. Fan did not work. Our tip to anyone staying here is do not take the bed sheets off till the last day they were vile! All you can eat BBQ....... non buttered bread and a sausage.
