“Not what was writin on the box”

On a last minute decision to splurge on a trip to the Gold Coast for the weekend (2 nights) we stayed at The Emerald as it had 2 rooms and an in-room spa. On arrival we were confronted with signs everywhere telling us what we would be billed extra for. Cooking a meal without windows open $860 as it may set the fire alarm off. Using the spa without ALL the windows open as this may also set off the fire alarm, over flowing the spa - another fine. Not doing the dishes, Not keeping carpets clean on leaving, the list went on & on.
As we started to unpack we noticed everything was dirty. Hand marks on doors and walls and spills on the carpet. Drinking glasses were dirty and coffee cups were the same.
Deciding to make the best of it we filled the spa bath up for a nice soak and some bubbles before hitting the sack,. Quickly found that we must have to bring our own bubbles. The tv was a average size with cable televison only some of the channels had sound the first nite we used it. On the second nite some channels had found there sound but others had lost theirs.
This place is in a great location only 5 minute walk to center of cavil ave (Surfers Paradise) which is the only good thing we found with this place. Too bad it's in a bad state. There are much better places to stay the holiday inn for starters is just as close to cavil ave and about the same price.

We were checking in late and the only problem we had was getting a hold of someone to let them know as they have limited office hours. Once we did, they left a key in the lobby & we had no troubles. The 2 bedroom unit we had was wonderful. It was clean, well kept and had everything we needed. The managers & the neighbor were very helpful in letting us know on things to do in the area. We did not use the pool which was small but others with young families seemed to be enjoying it. The location was great. I was a little worried about our 18 yr old daughter walking home by herself as the street could have been a little more well lit but had no problems. One thing we found (a hidden gem) we took a drive to Mount Tamborine to the Cedar Creek Winery & Glom Worm Cave - wow, at first we thought we were lost, but out of nowhere came a neat little town and the most gorgeous views you can't even imagine! We used the bar-b-que provided a couple times as well as the full kitchen. It was nice to be able to cook after eating out quite abit for the other 3 weeks we spent in Australia. We really enjoyed our week there.

We decided to stay at the Emerald as we wanted to stay somewhere different and we were pleasantly surprised. The Emerald whilst it is not right in the middle of Surfers, it is an easy walk to the centre of Surfers Paradise.

One thing that made our stay enjoyable were the staff. They were extremely friendly and very helpful.

As it is not a large complex if you are looking for peace and tranquility then this is the place for you. The view from the ensuite bathroom is absolutely stunning.

We have just returned from a 5 day / 4 night stay at The Emerald.

We were attracted to this resort as it offered apartment style accomodation with kitchen, laundry and a second beroom for the children. We were further enticed by the offer of three balconies, and an opulent spa arrangement in the onsuite. We were also attracted to the inroom cable TV.
Other facilities on offer included a heated pool, and a barbecue area, attached to a large seating area, and a lovely garden.

The pool looked lovely, although a little small. The lack of people using the pool was the first hint that the pool actually wasn't heated, and the temerature of the water was final evidence that the pool wasn't heated. We found this a little disappointing, as winter weather in Queensland does make for uncomfortable swimming in non-heated pools. Fortunately, the ocean water was warmer than the pool for the first 4 days.

The kitchen was a little sparcely fitted, with aged equipment, and not even a full set of cutlery. Drinking glasses were broken, so we replaced them ourselves. In order to cook in the kitchen, all windows must be opened, as the signage warns that failure to do this will cause the fire alarm to go off, with a resultant AUD$480 fine to the occupiers. This made winter cooking very uncomfortable.

The in room spa looked opulant, deep and inviting. The sign warned that unless the bathroom housing the spa had all of the windows open, the resulting steam would set off the fire alarms, resulting in a AUD$480 fine to the occupants. We tried to do this, but as winter nights are cold, we froze, and so the spa was a fizzer.

The TV provided was a 4/3 screen size - quite ordinary and accepable except the cabled movies were delivered as widescreen, and so much was missed - the credits and subtitles could not even be fully read as they would offen be offscreen.

Linen gets cleaned every 8 days - making it our responsibility to clean the linen for the oncoming guests after our departure. Failure to do this would result in a AUD$30 fine. I decided to live with the fine.

The main bedroom has a king size bed in it - but the room does not accomodate the bed properly. The hotel management have removed a bedside table to get the bed in, but the bed occupant closest to the wall has to climb over the other bed occupant to get into bed.

The apartment comes with a starter pack of everything - including toilet paper. Between the 4 of us, the small amount of provided paper was used up within the first day - and it was our responsibility to acquire more.

The apartment was in a neglected state, with rust on the bottom of many doorjams. The carpet was quite worn, and the tiles were scarily dirty - and no amount of wet mopping by us made this any better.

Fortunately, the Gold Coast in Queensland offers may attractions, and it offered us every excuse to not be in the apartment.

  • Liked — Easy to find, car parking, security
  • Disliked — Cleanliness, services, inability to use facilities
