My husband and I had lunch here yesterday. We had been wanting to try it since it opened but had been put off by 'basement'. We were pleasantly surprised that we walked off the street into a lovely room in a heritage building. The décor was pleasant but it was the food that stood out. We had the standard Thai Fish Cakes which were just OK. The Thai Won Tons were delicious and we would have them again. We decided to try the Lunch Special around $10.50 from memory. The Thai Green Curry and Jasmine Rice was fantastic one of the best I have tasted. We also had a chicken dish with cashews and this was wonderful as well. We can't wait to go back to this restaurant and would highly recommend it.

The food was average thai food, same as any other thai restaurant. Difference was the price was excessive and the service very slack. Took 30 minutes just to get menus and another hour for mains. Beautiful building but that's about the best thing going for it.

Actually still undecided on how to comment on this restaurant. Despite some of the other comments on TA about the service levels, we found it to be good. Food was timely and drinks were brought to the table without any great delay. Atmosphere/ambiance could be very good being in such a heritage building however it just lacks something with it's boring tables and chairs... looks more like a wedding reception with it's orderly old fashioned layout - Not really a basement but you can see that it tries to be. The entrance also needs work especially in the grassed area and garden at the front. Full of weeds and it would be a brave lady to tackle the uneven ground surrounding the chairs and tables area out the front. Food was a real mixed bag with two of the 5 main meals not finished. The BBQ Pork was so overcooked all cutlets were dried out and tough as boot leather (we received a free glass of wine in lieu) but the 3 stir fry meals were delicious. The Roasted Duck in coconut curry was sickly sweet though the duck was cooked wonderfully and no annoying bone in the duck but the coconut red Curry (more like soup) was so sickly sweet, meant the meal was only half eaten. The 2 Entree Tom Kha soups were the same, after a few initial spoonfuls of "yum" the sick sweet coconut taste overpowered the dish. Desserts are mostly different types of ice cream and really are nothing special - question is if it's scooped straight from a tub of supermarket ice cream.
So our advice is steer clear of the coconut dishes if you're not into a real sweet meal. Will we be back soon? Probably not as there are better Thai restaurants in Rockhampton but we will keep an eye on The Basement to see if management listen to reviews and step it up. We were also advised at 9:15pm that they were closing soon which seemed an early hurry up for a table of 5 spending money on 3 courses and drinks all around. Mmmm that's one of my pet hates about sleepy Rockhampton.

We had a group booking and when we turned up, the place was packed. I thought our dinner would take all night, but it didn't. Staff did a great job, food was great (our interstate visitors had no idea we would have such a gem of a place in regional QLD) and everyone in our group agreed it was a great dining experence. Well done.

This is the first time we had been at night so its different than lunch time. Lunch is quieter but the service is still slow. The food is lovely but it takes so long to come out and its not all brought out at the same time. I know in the menu it talks about not all dishes coming out as they like you to share food but I would like to get enough to start eating. We went on an evening mid week and it was packed. Only problem really is the sound. Its a stone building and the noise just escalates until you can't hear yourself think. Everyone has to talk louder to be heard. Two of us came out with a headache. The food is nice but takes forever to come. However when you see the size of the kitchen I'm surprised they manage to cook all that in such a small area. Could do with far more staff on at the weekend and bring the food out faster. Starters are small but mains are about average. Drinks take ages to come, that's if you can get anyone's attention to take you order in the first place.
