The hotel is a beautiful colonial building and the rooms are fitted out to suit. That's all the good I can say. Rockhampton is a dump. The hotel is located in an unattractive area of this dump and has a freight line running down the street. Trains run throughout the night.

If you really, really, have to stay in Rockhamton I would recommend staying on one of the motels north of the town. They're probably cheaper (we paid 175 AUD) and you have several fast food chains nearby; we ate in the Heritage Hotel and it was pretty poor.

Stayed overnight en route to Townsville - would have to say I don't think you'd find such high quality for such value in Rockhampton. Absolutely gorgeous room, and exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff. Would gladly return if ever in the area again - highly recommended.

We loved our one night in this hotel which is an old Queensland Railways administration building. I'm not sure if the building was used for offices or stores or staff accommodation but it has been restored and now provides huge atmospheric rooms in a massive old two storey building.
Although the rooms have air conditioning the building was obviously built, before such luxuries were available, for the tropical Queensland climate. Rooms are large with high ceilings (18 feet high?) and wide verandahs to provide respite from the summer heat. A quality breakfast, included in the tariff, was taken in the dining room downstairs.
The fiurnishings are in keeping with the heritage nature and overall, as a lover of heritage buildings, it was a buzz to stay here.
Across the road is a sprawling old Queensland pub - The Great Western - which has a decent steakhouse and, if you walk through the bar to the back of the building you'll find a massive arena where rodeo bull riding happens on a regular basis.
Twice a month there are bull riding competitions and at other times there is practice - you won't believe oit until you see it!
Also, during daylight hours walk down to the river and then along the street facing the river to admire all the heritage buildings that are a reminder of Rocky's days as a major port. Finish with a drink at the Criterion Hotel ('the Cri') a lovely old hotel.

Room Tip: I'd opt for an upstairs room (no lift) - ask when booking.

Gorgeous rooms, great location, exquisite rooms. Just missing some wine glasses and a bath mat! This hotel is the best in Rockhampton! The rooms are beautifully appointed and everything is so comfortable.

We stayed at the Denison for a week. The rooms are large and furnished in old world style. It has all the modern cons though you can chill out on the couch and watch the large TV or see it from the four poster bed. The staff were great, couldn't do enough for us and the breakfast was amazing this is included in your price. We have stayed in a lot of places and have experienced many things good and bad but the Denison ticks all the boxes for us we will be going back. Value for money and very clean and comfortable. Great for holiday or business or romantic getaway and is walking distance to the town centre.

Room Tip: We had an upstairs room at the back of the hotel which I recommend

We stayed at this hotel last night after reading great reviews on here, I was expecting great things and we weren't disappointed. For the price of $175 on a Friday night the Denison is definitely great value compared to other hotels/motels in the area.

The room is fitted out beautifully with quality fixtures and appliances - we always enjoy having an iphone/ipod dock to play our own music and were pleasantly surprised that the room had one of these, as a well as a mini hi-fi system and a huge flat screen t.v.

As others have said the room has a certain old world charm to it, with a comfy large 4 poster bed and we loved using the huge spa bath. One thing I particularly noticed was how exceptionally clean everything was, my partner even mentioned just how sparkling clean the spa/ shower area was. Being 8 months pregnant I was a bit wary of using the spa at first but after inspecting it I was more than happy to jump in as I was sure it was clean and hygienic.

We had a bit of an issue with the hot water running out whilst filling the spa and made a call to reception, the manager was more than happy for us to change rooms but we assured him that we would just wait and see if the hot water would return which it did thankfully.

The noise wasn't a problem for us and we hardly noticed the trains that other's have mentioned - it could have had something to do with the position of our room which was on the ground floor and furthest from reception which I think was away from the train line. I would ask about this on booking if it's a concern.

The single only let down of our stay was the breakfast. Unfortunately the hot food on offer was not very appetising - burnt, hard bacon, grey looking scrambled eggs and dry/ old poached eggs sitting in a portable bay marie. I ended up having some toast and cereal which was ok but not the great hot breakfast I was hoping for on a cold rainy morning.

I think if the breakfast was improved (if eggs/ bacon could be cooked to order perhaps) especially when there aren't many guests to cater to at breakfast time, this would be an absolutely 5 star experience. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful, and the overall feel of the place is warm and inviting. We will definitely stay there again!.

Room Tip: we chose room 4 and were very happy, ground floor and away from the trains.

We stayed in the Denison as a one night stop over and we were pleasently surprised.

Pros:
Beautiful Room, spacious with spa bath (in the middle of the room!!), four poster bed.
Really cosy couch, really liked this as we could chill out and watch TV in the room.
Breakfast included in night rate with good selection, hot food or cereals, teas, coffees.
Staff very friendly and accomadating, let us check out late.
Free wifi which is always a bonus : )
Did not hear any trains passing as room was at back of the hotel.
Nice pub across the road with good food and friendly atmosphere.

Cons:
Hotel a little far out from the shops and restaurents. (If travelling with older people taxi would be required).

Overall was very happy with this hotel and would recommend it to anyone one looking for a cosy weekend away!!
