We dined here for dinner and the food was excellent. We both had the duck dish which was very well cooked with compatible accompaniments and well flavoured.
Staff handled a dietary intolerance very well and with considerable care.
The candle-lit, open area of the restaurant provided a lovely atmosphere for the evening.
Just a few first impressions and issues made this a less-than-excellent experience:
Firstly, although we had a reservation, we (and another couple) were left standing at the reception desk for a considerable time, whilst staff passed us all and send nothing. We almost crossed our name out of the booking list to go elsewhere.
Secondly, menus were dirty and marked; quite off-putting and contrary to expectations here.
Thirdly, our mains arrived less than 10 minutes after our pre-dinner drinks and we would not have chosen to have those drinks with our meals. Our wait staff were aware we intended to order more wine, as we had asked to keep the wine list. A little more awareness as to the pacing of the meal would have been appreciated and would have meant more wine ordered.
Lastly, after asking for the bill, our waitress came back and asked if we wanted to order dessert or had we asked for the bill?
A little annoyingly for us and we noted for some other people close by, every staff member prefaced every conversation with "hey, guys" and "you guys" - friendly we know, but a little jarring in this environment. We think the nature of guests (age, female) and that Zinc purports to be an upmarket restaurant should be taken into consideration for greetings to be appropriate to diners' expectations and for service to be considered professional.
We are sure that if these matters are dealt with, all aspects would match the excellent quality of the food, but just a few things let it down on this occasion.

This was probably one of the best meals we had in Australia. Staff was great, kind, fast, helpful. We ordered pasta and beef, both were delicious and served promptly. If we had stayed longer in Port Douglas, we would have come back for sure.

We stayed in Port Douglas for four nights and ate in pubs for two nights and high end restaurants for two nights.

Zinc is definitely worth a visit as the food was great. As other reviewers have mentioned the fish tank in the bathroom is a sight to see, but just adds to make the place very enjoyable and special.

Service and staff was great. Lots of smiles and our water glasses and drinks were never empty.

Making the booking (and I recommend you make one) left me scratching my head. Firstly we had to wait for another staff member to come and do it. Then we could not get the time we wanted by 30 minutes which isnt the end of the world by any means. I'm happy to have another beer at the bar ! But as we were going in a couple walked up and got a table without a booking. Still no drama, but I asked our waitress if they were busy and she said no, its a quiet night ? So thats my biggest complaint !

I would definitely go back again. It was very nice and I loved it.
