“Very happy with Shantara”
Reviewed May 10, 2011

We had a one bedroom apartment on the 2nd floor. Its decor was modern and of a high quality. We had limited contact with staff, but when we did, they were friendly and helpful.

Found the resort appealing online being adult only! But found that during the day kids "visiting" running around the pool- making noise and not peaceful- If I wanted to go to a campsite I would have. Also the rooms back onto the pool - nice but all the sound travels and echos up to the room and balcony. We were unlucky enough to have a large group of people getting drunk by the pool- steadily getting louder as the day went on- so much so that there was no way we were gonna be able to relax by the pool.
Also the spa has actually closed- so really no chance to relax- if we'd known all of this I would have booked in at a proper hotel.

Shantara, Manager at Shantara Resort Port Douglas, responded to this review, May 11, 2011
During the stay of these guests we did have a small group of 4 couples (8 adults) that were in Port Douglas to celebrate a wedding. As expected these guests did congregate together at times which can sometimes result in “extra noise and activity”.

We do state that we cater for adults only, but it is difficult to “ban” our guest’ visitors, especially if they don’t tell us. We regret that this caused some annoyance to the in house guests. If we are made aware of any unusual activity we would certainly do our best to limit any disruption to our guests.

There was a period where unfortunately the facilities of the Day Spa were not available. This was beyond our control and we did our best to accommodate our in house guests where necessary. The Spa is now operational once more with a new therapist.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Shantara and would recommend it to friends. The location is fantastic as it's near the main street of downtown Port Douglas (less than 5min walk) and right across from 4 Mile Beach (again, less than 5min walk). The rooms are kept well and the bathroom was spacious with a fantastic shower. We enjoyed relaxing by the pool and sipping cocktails on the balcony in the evening before heading out to dinner. Overall, a really lovely experience and I would definitely stay there again.

Rooms were very modern, ours had a king size bed, large spa bath and kitchenette. Large balconies to have breaky on, beautiful views of the resort and pool area. Couldn't fault this place

We were very impressed with Shantara. Normally we are not overly concerned with accommodation when travelling as long as its clean thats all that matters. This trip however was about staying in, relaxing by the pool and leaving feeling rejuvenated, Shantara certainly delivered as did Port Douglas itself. We can't wait to get back there, a big thumbs up to Shantara and the friendly locals of Port Douglas.

Without doubt the best place we've stayed on our travels. Underground secure parking, high-class facilities, everything is brand new and well-designed. The room was great (studio pool deck for 7 days - wasn't too small at all, though we're used to studio-size rooms!) and had everything we needed. Walking out of the apartment and onto the pool deck was fantastic. I read a review on this site about the sun not striking parts of the pool, so there was a little concern at first, but this was allayed pretty quickly. First, the sun starts on one side and swings around to the other, and while there are some rooms that don't get much sun (depending on the height in the sky), there is plenty of space to go and lounge about in the common areas provided.

On top of that, the weather was pleasant enough that you didn't actually need sunlight to stay warm - in fact, I often moved into the shade because it was too hot in the sun. The pool itself was heated well (not too warm or cold), had great mood lighting at night and the waterfall a great feature.

The BBQ on the pool deck was fantastic and well kitted out with utensils and condiments (great thought, because who brings condiments with them?). Even if you don't have a kitchen in your room (which we didn't), you can use the BBQ for the meat and cook some microwave vegies in the microwave if you get sick of eating out.

Service was fantastic and very helpful, including a selection of recommended restaurants and assistance with booking tours. The place was quiet (no kids) and relaxing, and the rustling of the wind in the palms was a great bonus. I imagine it must have been pretty busy when we first arrived (Easter break), but you couldn't tell. The pool was nearly deserted most of the time, and the most people who were ever down there at once was 6 or 7. It was like having your own private pool/lagoon, so we couldn't have been happier just lazing (or sleeping) on the deck with a beer and a good book.

If I had to nominate downsides (and they're very minor), it would be that the health spa wasn't available at the time of our stay (it's a separate business, so not Shantara's fault they were closed), and that there was no on-site restaurant. While it would have been great to be able to just go to the on-site restaurant a couple of times, you are only 400m walk from the main street and there are literally dozens of fantastic places to eat within easy walking (or stumbling) distance. Zinc on the corner is particularly good for fine-dining and has great food and service, as is Bucci just down the road.

On top of that, many of the places will deliver to your room for a nominal fee (couple of dollars), so in reality it isn't much to complain about. We loved our stay and would happily return and recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing, secluded getaway within walking distance of everything in Port Douglas. Thanks so much to the guys at Shantara! :)

Shantara is amazing!
My partner and I stayed for 4 nights and loved every moment of it.
The apartments are modern, well designed and clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful with dining and activity suggestions.
Shantara is conveiniently located, the beach, main street and marina are all within a short stroll. Yet it is peacfully quiet and very relaxing.
I can not say a bad word about Shantara and we will be definitely be visiting again soon.

Thanks so much for having us!
