“great luxury family friendly resort”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

we live near port douglas so we stay there often sometimes two or three times a year. we have tried other resorts but always come back to qt (formerly rydges port douglas). the resort is nice since the total make over and the rooms are great. we stay in the 1 bedroom villas near pool. the rooms are great and fitted out nicely, and they have a sofa for the kids to sleep on. staff are fantastic and service is great, so much better than cairns where we live, but that is always the case port is much better at tourism. they employ locals not back packers. the rest is great, breakfast is good and value for money. the pool area is big and plenty of chairs, great for couples or families though more umbrellas would be good. love the place thats why we keep going back

My partner and I stayed at the QT for 7 nights; we would rate the hotel at 3 star - not 5.

The service is incredibly slow and not up to scratch, all the bar staff and reception staff look quite scruffy, with stains on their clothes and dirty fingernails.

We had our NYE dinner at the hotel in Bazaar, we actually thought that the food was really good but again the service was rubbish, we had to ask for the same drink 3 times before it arrived. The chefs were amazing though, they made a real effort and cooked steak up to your liking - they were really friendly and made you feel looked after. The chefs were the best thing about this hotel.

We also ate at the hotel bar; Estillo - this was really disappointing, the food was tasteless and took a very long time to arrive at the table.

The first room we stayed in was dirty, had cobwebs, dirt on the walls, insects - we complained and were promptly moved to another room which was much better.

The hotel gym and lap pool closes at 5pm on weekdays and 2pm at the weekends, we thought this was a joke.

The retro bikes are just cheap vintage looking bikes which haven't been maintained, 2 of 4 occasions we couldn't actually use the bikes as they only have a few and they were all out on rental. But the bikes are handy for getting to any shops as there are none within walking distance of the hotel.

There are no robes, slippers, complimentary water in your room - we felt that these should really be present in a 5* hotel.

My fiance and I have recently returned from a 6 night stay at QT. Overall, we had a nice stay at QT Port Douglas, but there is definitely room for improvement.

THE GOOD
1. Grounds and communal areas: are stunning (exactly as advertised). The spaces are open, the pool is very inviting and the bar areas are a lovely place to relax.
2. Service: Contrary to other patrons' experiences, we found the staff warm, hard-working and helpful. However, I agree that Bazaar might benefit from a few extra staff.
3. NYE at Bazaar: We celebrated NYE at Bazaar ($AUD90pp) for buffet and a glass of Moet. The selection and quality was good. I can highly recommend the spanner crab and tasting plates. Don't forget to ask the chefs to cook you some fish or meat.
4. The resort pool (and pool bar): So relaxing!
5. The lap pool: is marginally cooler and deeper than the resort pool (ie. better for adults) and scuba courses can be held there (eg. with Blue Water Dive).

THE (sorta) BAD
1. Housekeeping: Everyday, there was a problem with the housekeeping (ie. not replacing cutlery/towels, giving us 3 bottles of moisturiser instead of replacing shampoo).
2. Breakfast: We were lucky enough to get 2 for 1 breakfasts, so for $14 a head, breakkie was fine, however, if I were paying $28pp, I would have been disappointed. In fairness, the selection of food may been reduced over the holiday period?
3. Pool area upkeep: During our early morning swims, we found that the pool areas were still littered with waste from the night before.
4. Location: ~30min walk to Macrossan St (remember, it's 34degC), so not a great option if you don't have a car.

THE UGLY
1. Our 1bdr Garden View room (the real let down): smelled like mould. There was a permanent wet patch on the floor and the door hinges were rusted. Our sheets weren't entirely clean and the bathroom grout needed redoing. QT, re-do your rooms and you will have scored an excellent rating!

My partner snd I stayed here 5th Jan 14 on a locals rate. This was our first visit as we normally stay at another well know resort. We had a 1bdrm Garden villa with breakfast included. I was very impressed with the room for the price. Nice size and good decor. The mini bar was resonsbly priced with some quirky things on the list. We had lunch which was very well priced and very nice food. The young chef cooking the spanish bbq was doing a great job. I loved the breakfast with the individual farmers type pots instead of the boring baine maire. There was a great range for a breakfast and the oven roasted tomatoes were to die for. The older chef was very attentive to his food. The cocktails were nice , the pool was great although a bit warm but thats expected this time year. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We will be back very soon.

Oh how I wish this place was everything I want it to be!
Love the overall impression but there are so many things that let QT down, and I share the general feeling the recent reviews from other visitors have posted-just a heads up to have a look at what is happening with lack of service and care in the pool area in particular.
It could be so great but is terribly run down, understaffed and under serviced.

My wife and 2 kids stayed there during the Christmas and New Year break. At first glance you will be amazed by the beautiful surroundings and how funky the interior looks, unfortunately if it was judged on feel and atmosphere the QT will win hands down, but it's not. The housekeeping is shocking, we had a adjoining room so when they would clean our room, they would only clean one but not the other! Our room got cleaned 4 out of the 10 days we were there, the first only happened when we rang to complain that it's been 4 days and no one has been to our room. The weird thing is when we checked out, they knew we drank 2 drinks from the minibar on the 2nd day but they didn't even clean the room on that day. The menu is quite expensive, we paid $18 for a bucket of Buffalo Wings.. It arrived with 7 small pieces of wings cut up.. Dinner Buffet is great if you love seafood, because you would get your moneys worth as it's $65 per adult. If you don't love seafood save your money and go to the main strip in Port Douglas..
If it wasn't for the many great couples we met and chatted with, this hotel would of got no ratings.

My husband and I brought in the New Year at this beautiful property, and while we loved the property, we conistently found the service lacking.

It is obvious that the managers are trying terribly hard for a "funky" feel to the property, but model-esque staff in skimpy uniforms are completely unnecessary. Perhaps hiring service staff with experience in hospitality instead? And it is only a cosmetic modern feel, seeing as even vegetarians have extremely limited options and non-dairy milk is nowhere in sight. You would think a hotel trying to be so "with it" would know what "it" was. The restaurants and room service were incredibly understaffed, meaning long wait times for everything. After waiting 1.5 hours for a vegetarian club sandwich via room service, we reminded them again and a salad sandwich was brought up - not a club, no chips and not toasted. I have no idea what we were charged for. Breakfast left everyone waiting and waiting for plates, then standing by empty trays waiting for food to be brought out.

There seemed to be a lot going on at QT, including trivia nights, massages by the pool and special food options, but the problem is they don't tell you about them. If you are lucky, you might stumble across the fact that the chefs prepare dumplings, etc. for you when asked at dinner, or perhaps you will be fortunate enough to stumble into last drinks at the Pool Bar which are never called, just cut off.

Speaking of the Pool Bar, enormous opportunity is lost because their operating hours (even on NYE) are midday to only 5pm. Service is dreadful, though, and not available at your lounge chairs as is often the case in top resorts. I spotted many people getting several drinks for themselves at a time because it took so long to get served. Not necessarily because there was a big line, but the 2 staff members had better things to do within the bar other than serve their customers. And if you were expecting a returned smile from the staff, forget about it. Lunch at the Pool Bar took up to 1.5 hours and was often cold.

The pool itself was lovely. Gorgeous design and lots of lounges. Not a great deal of shade, though. To get an umbrella (almost half were broken) you need to get in early. The lounges were often filthy and growing with mould. Not once did I see anyone cleaning the lounges and it showed.

The housekeeping staff seemed very inexperienced, most of them being rather young. Two days out of seven, our room wasn't even made up. When the room WAS made up, room service dishes were left there, towels weren't replaced and the sliding door to the balcony was left wide open for some reason, allowing mosquitos into the room so we woke up looking like we had itchy measles. I'm sure I'll laugh about it one day.

Props go to the Reception staff, who were always pleasant if not helpful, and especially to the SpaQ staff. Emma was incredible. Her skill is unparalelled and she was a pure delight to deal with. I would follow her to any resort.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with new Daikin airconditioners. Many still have old LG units, which are very tou...
