Pros: good value, excellent breakfasts, very helpful hosts, clean rooms, right by the beach
Cons: location if you want to be right in town...however you can get into town on the regular (every 20 mins) town shuttle for $5

I've come back to Port Douglas because of the great experience I had two years ago at Colin and Frieda's exquisite B&B. I'm sitting here by the pool in the gloaming, with the water lapping gently. There's been a gentle rain and now we slide into the night. It's been a week of total relaxation, tai chi on the beach each morning, a swim in the pool, a breakfast of fruits you've only ever read about... How will I be able to face the NZ winter when I get back?

Room Tip: There are only two rooms - I always choose the one with the bath!

Colin and Fried have created a calming and peaceful place for their guests to relax. Breakfasts are eaten around a fabulous large wooden round table under a canopy that protects from both sun and rain. It looks onto the lovely pool area and soothing music from around the world helps to start your day.

Breakfasts are wonderful - Frieda prepares exotic fruits as well as providing information on them ( there may be a test!) homemade yogurt, eggs, cheeses, delicious preserves, breads, granola, delicious coffee etc. - it was hard to tear ourselves away from the table.

The bedrooms are quite large -they have a mini fridge which was stocked with snacks and wine ( thank you so much!) the bed is very comfortable, lots of towels for the pool too and a large shower.

They are a great source of tourist information - - they know the best places to book with, to eat at, to explore etc.

The beach is right across the road - just a short walk through the bush and you will arrive and feel like Captain Cook discovering Australia - it is so private and beautiful.

One regret - we could not stay longer.

From the moment we arrived, Frieda and Colin made us feel like we were staying with friends. We picked this B&B at random but like many of our random travel decisions, this worked out better than expected.
Colin took great pride in showing us the features of their house, including the mains water driven hydraulic lift. Frieda shone in the kitchen when it came to breakfast. Fresh fruit and juice, homemade yoghurt, boiled eggs, cheese, a range of breads. They have both led pretty amazing lives and we enjoyed hearing about their travels and experiences. Lots of local knowledge and suggestions on what to see and do. They couldn’t do enough for us.
The property sits outside of the central tourist area in what some would term ‘the suburbs’ but this was part of what made the stay so nice. We could slip into the tourist area and fade quietly away from the hustle and bustle when ready.
The other big bonus is the Beach Shack restaurant that is only a five minute stroll from the B&B. We were so impressed with the atmosphere, service and the food (oh the food!!). On the second evening when we had some problems finding a restaurant in town with a vacancy, it took very little convincing to have us back at the Beach Shack.
The beach is a short walk through a shady grove and was a lovely way to spend a late afternoon.

If you’re staying in Port Douglas – do yourselves a favour – stay here!

Although modest from the front, once you are inside, this little B&B is a haven for relaxation.

Our Hosts: When we arrived, Frieda and Colin met us at the car with a smile and hello and assisted us with our luggage. They were very friendly and helpful with all of our needs from laundry to mosquito deterrent to recommendations on things to do. They were the perfect blend of friendly hospitality and leaving us to explore on our own. I never felt like I was intruding in someone else’s home.

The House: The house is laid out in an L shape, with one side the main part of the house where the hosts live and the other side rooms. In the middle area is a fabulous tropical area with a pool, lush gardens and a covered table where we gathered for breakfast. Breakfast included a wonderful and unique assortment of Australian fruits. Our room was larger than the normal room, was very conveniently set up for all of our luggage and the bathroom was very functional. Just a 5 minute walk through some trees and you are on 4 mile beach – a beautiful sugary white sand beach. Note: In the summer you can’t swim here due to the jellyfish. It’s about a 5 minute drive from the downtown area of Port Douglas, which looked great, but we didn't have time to expore.

Overall a quaint and relaxing place to stay while in PD!

We stayed here for three nights during the November Total Eclipse. My first contact with this b&B was by email a couple of years before. The owners Colin and Freida couldn't have been more helpful. They regularly kept us updated on all the things what were happening around Port Douglas and advised that we book trips earlier than normal because of the huge influx of people there for the eclipse. They even emailed us a few days before our stay to advise us that if we wanted to eat out places were booking up (Something we'd not considered) and they booked us a table at the nearby "Beach Shack" restaurant. (Excellent food BTW).

As we had booked both rooms, we had the place to ourselves and it quickly became a peaceful oasis. The pool was a welcome relief from the heat. Colin provided my 7 year old daughter with a "Woggle" float (A long thin foam tube) and she was happy swimming by herself in the pool.

The rooms were of a decent size, both with ceiling fans and air-conditioning. Tea & coffee making facilities, a fridge, plenty of hanging space for clothes and a decent sized bed. Each had an fair sized on-suite bathroom. One with a bath (with shower) and the other a shower only.

Breakfast was delightful, with a wide choice of fruits available, as well as toast and cereal.

Freida and Colin made sure that they were there to help if we ever needed anything (They kindly allowed us use of their washing machine - we went out for a walk whilst it was washing and came back to find our washing had already been hung out of the washing line by Freida!), but also allowed us to enjoy the entire downstairs of their house by ourselves.

This is not a hotel, this is someone's home. Standards of cleanliness are therefore not 5 star - however we found everywhere neat, clean & tidy. Parking is directly outside on the road, but it is a quiet residential street. There was the occasional noise from passing cars and the neighbours (like we would have back home sometimes), however it was not distracting at all and it quickly became quiet again.

On the day of the eclipse we found our hosts had provided free eclipse viewing glasses for us. We all got up early and met Frieda and Colin on the nearby Four Mile Beach, just a 2 minute walk away. They had brought additional seats for us all as well as coffee and tea, something we weren't expecting, making it a truly special morning.

In conclusion, We have no hesitation in recommending this B&B, and would gladly stay here again.

We stay for three days in August. I really enjoyed this bed and breakfast. The breakfast was outstanding. Great coffee, fresh fruit of many kinds, breads, cheese, and Museli. The gardens were well done. The bed was comfortable and the rooms clean.

Frieda was very helpful to provide information in the area. Maps, coupons, and brouchers.

One day we travelled up to Cape tribulation and took several of the boardwalks. We saw many different things there. Snakes, birds, Iguanas.

Second day traveled to Mosman gorge and saw amazing trees and plant life.

The B & B is a 1-2 miles from the main restaurant area in port douglas. We drove down and found no problems with parking. There is a restaurant called the beach shack. The curry was really good. Prices are a little high but I think the food was good enough to justify it. My wife got the prawns (appitizer) for her meal and it was big enough to satisfy.

The beach is across the street and a short walk throught the forest. It is a packed sand. We should have spend more time there but wanted to see other areas first and ran out of time.

The only issue I had was finding it. I should have asked for directions before coming. I did a google maps directions from Bruce hwy and somehow got mixed up. I ended up going downtown and getting a map so I could find the street. I should have asked for more details in advance.

On the way to Cairns airport we had a late afternoon depature. We took the road through Atherton table lands as suggested by Frieda. It nice seeing a differnt road. We saw Termite homes, Fruit farms, Stopped in coffee works in Mareeba and visited Kurunda to see the falls and buy some souveners. It took about 5 hours with the stops.
