“Well equipped apartments and really friendly staff”
Reviewed April 10, 2009

We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which was really well equipped and spotlessly clean. The air conditioning was great and essential as the weather was very very hot and humid. We had a swim out apartment which meant that we could step out of our apartment straight into the pool which the kids and myself loved. Great moment at 4am when the jetlag kicked in when I went outside (which was warmer than inside the airconditioned apartment) and swam in the pool in perfect silence!

The pool is securely behind locked gates from the apartments which spoils the feel of the place a bit but keeps everyone safe so a really positive thing for those travelling with children.

Loved it - perfect for the more independent traveller but you definately need a car.

A group of around 12 friends stayed at the Oaks Lagoons in early November 2008 as a base to explore this region prior to a wedding in Port Douglas. We chose this property because it is one of the newer ones in Port Douglas and had many beautiful lagoon pools throughout the complex. We got a great deal by ringing the property direct and it was the beginning of the low (rainy) season but the weather was fantastic. The property is outside of town so we recommend a car but its a great base and has BBQ amenities, internet access in reception for a charge and you can book activities out on the reef etc with reception. My husband and I stayed in a ground level 1 bedroom plunge pool apartment. It had a separate bedroom and ensuite, lounge/kitchen area and another room with a chair and desk that we used to store luggage. The plunge pool area was in its own courtyard with a shade sail and deck chairs. The only drawback to this area was that the 1st floor apartment above us had a balcony that had a view into our courtyard but at the time no-one was staying there. All amenities were brand new and the kitchen was well equipped for self catering. Our friends stayed in 1 bedroom swimout apartments with their own deck area and deck chairs straight out to the lagoon pools. There was ample parking and the BBQ area is great - it can cater for large groups. Overall a great property to stay at; staff were very helpful and friendly and the accommodation is great for the price. We would definitely stay here again. There are first floor apartments with spa on the balcony but once you get here, you will want to have a swimout!

The location is somewhat remote being over 3 Kms from Port Douglas, but there is a good bus service. There is little else in the area.
Our stay was out of season when occupation was very low and hence very quiet.
There are no facilities except the 4 swimming pools, no restaurant, no bar no housekeeping service, or anything else. Just 4 pools and numerous cramped units.
Our Spar Suite was very small and uncomfortable due to lack of furniture and kitchen equipment which would normally be expected in accommodation at the price charged.
The kitchenette, was useless, not a toaster or microwave, and the cutlery and other items were the absolute minimum. We have stayed in better motels.
There are something close to 200 units, crammed close up to the 4 rectangular pools.
Lack of privacy is a problem and each unit is very overlooked, the noise from children in the pool is constant during the day and evenings. What it would be like during peak season does not bear thinking about !!! Very poor value. If this place is what is commonly called a "RESORT" then in future we will avoid them. There seem to be a
lot of Resorts in Port Douglas, hopefully they will not all be like The Oaks Lagoons Resort.

If you want to take the plunge into a relaxing, rejuvenating getaway, without breaking the budget, Oaks Lagoons Port Douglas is the place for you.

The gleaming resort with apartment style rooms face onto 6 lagoon pools which snake along the length of the resort, broken up by cabana areas complete with BBQ. The modern one bedroom apartment is crisp & white, its king bedroom has an adjoining room with sofa bed, perfect for a young family. The spacious kitchen offers all the essentials, but it was barely touched with such a tempting range of dining options nearby. We were upstairs & I would recommend paying a little extra to upgrade to the swimout rooms and be able to access the pool straight from your room.

Already feeling relaxed, I wondered whether it was really necessary to indulge in either a massage or Bowen Therapy available onsite at Oaks. Intrigued by the Bowen Therapy, but sceptical of its holistic promises, I was truly amazed by the “miracle” results. Bowen Therapy, for the uninitiated is a remedial body technique which is gentle & relaxing. It triggers specific receptors that enable the body to correct dysfunctions & restore balance. The relaxing session was a highlight of my holiday and there is a discount for inhouse guests.

The resort is just a short stroll from Four Mile Beach or you can hire bikes to explore Port. We opted for the convenience of the local bus service or taxi to local restaurants.

Dining higlights were breakfast at Soul n Pepper, in prime position on Dickson Inlet where the big breakfast are served in the pan. Lunch at Otz Food, just a short stroll from Oaks where you can pick up gourmet essentials. Dinner at Salsa, with outdoor dining in a converted Queenslander serving up great cocktails, divine food & amazing service.

Our recent stay at the Oaks Lagoons was based on comments from fellow trip advisor travellers and excellent value off season pricing.
We booked and prepaid through the Oaks website for a 1 bedroom with private plunge pool for two nights. The rate of $129AUD per night was excellent value for this large ground floor apartment. The desk service was efficient, the property location was good, our main concern is that these apartments are dual key which means there is a hotel room attached (or 2 bedroom apt) which has a patio with a spa. This spa patio is surrounded by louvres so if this room is occupied there is little privacy for either party. Then the apartment above you looks down directly on your private plunge pool and patio, so really not so private...
The small plunge pool was delightful in the tropical rains and we were lucky enough not to have any nosey neighbours.
The apartment was very comfortable, large king bed with dressing room, rather small bathroom but okay, large open plan living area attractively furnished, but I do wish some of these designers would try sitting on some of their furniture of choice as the couch which looks great was most uncomfortable and hard.
We have noticed also that many properties in this region do not have their own housekeeping staff and have what is known as contract cleaners. In most cases these contract cleaners always seem to let a property down when it comes to really being clean. I dont know if the Oaks has these cleaners, but certain areas of housekeeping were poor, example hair and dust on bathroom floor. Bedlinens and towels spotless and as for comments regarding Ghekos, we learn to live with these creatures in north Queensland and they are truly harmless and are not vermon. We have several at home with names...ha ha
TV in the bedroom would be a plus, but overall the property was most attractive, well cared for and overall a pleasant place to stay.
Yes we would stay here again and recommend it to friends.

I travelled with my family, boys 5 & 7 and my husband. We booked a two bedroom with private plunge apartment. The room was great and catered for nearly everything we needed. The boys had an ensuite bedroom with 2 single beds and an adjoining study. The study contained a lounge suite with a fold out bed and desk. It was great as it was used as a playroom. There is no TV located in the children’s room. Our room also an ensuite room contained a queen bed with small sink, tea and coffee facilities and bar fridge. We had sliding doors which opened out to a large hot tub. All was clean and tastefully decorated. There was a door adjoining the hot tub area to the courtyard and pool. The kitchen was clean with two electric hotplates and a microwave/grill/convection oven. No standard oven. Full size fridge and lots of cupboard space with a single drawer dishwasher. It had everything we needed to cater for ourselves and it is not a bad thing as average prices for a main meal in Port Douglas was $20+ for lunch and dinner. The only thing this place could have done with was better cookware. The frypan was a non stick and was scratched and buckled. There is a washing machine and drier however it is so hot there it is probably quicker to put wet clothes outside. The plunge pool was fantastic as it has a shade sail over it which keeps this pool much cooler than the larger ones outside. We had 3 movie channels and kids’ channels. There are two TV’s, one in the main bedroom and one in the lounge. The lounge suite is horribly uncomfortable and covered in vinyl so you ended up sticking to it most of the time. The customer service at reception was pretty lousy most of the time and the young girl huffed and puffed a lot when we checked out 20 minutes before closing time. Mind you it only took her five minutes to finalise the bill. The room gets cleaned once a week however if you need to wash anything there are mops brooms and washing machine. You will need to bring/buy dishwashing liquid, dishwashing machine powder and milk as the supplies are low. I didn't find the bed terribly comfortable however my husband did. It is zipped up in the middle to make a queen size. Bit tacky really considering it is a 4-4.5 star. The main pools were clean however very warm. Like a bath temperature. The BBQ facilities are fantastic with everything you need and it is extremely well looked after. This is located in the middle of the pool area and has many tables and chairs around. The swim out rooms are great however they have little privacy because everyone can use the main pools. I have added great sights and restaurants under things to do in Port Douglas. Briefly though you must go to the Rainforest Habitat, Mango Jam Restaurant, Seafood Shop located behind the Coles supermarket and has Sqwark the talking cockatoo, and a couple of the pubs located opposite the beach have great deals like parma night, pasta night etc for $9.95. Go see the feeding of George the Groper at the Inlet Restaurant too. Also there is a seafood shop at the Smithfield shopping centre (outside of Cairns) which really is worth a look. We really enjoyed out stay here cos it was private, we could cool down after the main pools were closed and could have a spa at anytime. Perfect for a young family. We booked through Wotif and left it until a fortnight before. We paid $189 p/n.

We booked this 5 night stay on Wotif only 5 hours before we were due to fly out from Melbourne, we had trouble working out where we wanted to stay. We wanted to keep costs down by not having to buy cooked food all the time, and I wanted a reasonably close swimming area as I was heavily pregnant and feeling a bit shy.

The appartment was well equipt with cooling, full kitchen, tv with cable, and a lovely king (if a little hard) bed.

As others have stated, this is an apartment, self-contained. If you want fresh towels every day, and cleaning, don't come here. But the apartment was very neat and clean and modern on arriving. My tip to the Oaks would be, in addtion to the bath towels, provide a set of pool towels - these can be hired however.

I found the staff not over attentive, but willing to help - perfect for me, as I don't like having people clean under me, or usher me out so they can get their job done.

Overall it provided a perfect base to travel to all of the best destinations in Port Doug and beyond. My personal tip would be to travel between Oct-and December when it is reasonably quiet.
