“My stay at the Oaks Lagoons”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

I was some what leary about renting an apartment style room on my stay in Port Douglas. In the past I have only done traditional hotel stays. I was more than pleasantly surprised by how nice our accomodations were!! They were super clean. The set up was perfect for us. I needed my own studio, but since I was traveling with another couple, we wanted to stay close but not together. We each had our own apartment. I had a studio and the other couple had a whole suite. There was a outside door leading from outside. Then when you enter there is a small vistibule with two more doors each leading to our own apartments! Both apartments over looked a pool and had a balcony that was shared, with a jacuzzi tub! I would do it again and highly reccomend it to anyone looking to stay in the area. At Oaks Lagoons we met Helen who works in the lobby and could not have been nicer to us!! She was so helpful and genuinely nice. Wonderful person. Since there is no place to eat at Oaks Lagoons Helen reccommeded we go next door to the Ramada Inn. They have a restaurant that serves breakfast/lunch and dinner. The wait straff is excellent there and they could not have been nicer either. There is also a shuttle bus that you pick up at the Ramada that takes you all over for $5.

Lovely to read you really enjoyed the apartment style accommodation in what we call a dual key apartment. Shared, but still with your own privacy for when you need some. These work really well when travelling with older children and especially when travelling with grandparents or older family members who still like to have some independence. Helen is a gem and thank you for recognising her in this review. We really want to do everything we can to help out guests enjoy our region. We do have some special deals in place but some of the best things to do in the region are free. We love telling our guests about these little tropical treasures. Pleased you had a safe trip home. Hope to see you here again.

I picked up a fantastic deal for this resort through an on line voucher. We stayed there for 5 days and nights in a first floor one bedroom apartment. It was very spacious and very clean and well presented. The pools and spa nooks were very nice and we spent most afternoons there relaxing. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and the manager and reception staff provided very helpful information and hints for our stay. The facilities were well maintained and clean and were always being used by the guests. As part of our voucher we also received a discount for a Massage from the salon on site. This was very relaxing and much needed after my many games of golf. Its location is good for proximity to everything, but it is still very quiet. We had a couple of different unagreeble neighbors during our stay, but there is very little you can do about it and we did not let it affect our time there.

Room Tip: Pay the extra money for a Pool entry room

Thank you for staying with us and sharing this feedback. Our 5 nite packages do represent excellent value and we do have some of these available on our website from time to time. I hope you got out to try all 3 golf courses in our region, Palmer Golf, Sheraton Mirage, and the local club course at Mossman. The course at Mareeba combined with a day tour of the tablelands, is a nice course also if you’re happy to shoo away the kangaroos before taking a shot! Apologies about the neighbours, always happy to get rowdy people to be more thoughtful! Hope to see you again soon for another northern escape.

Staff were great. Warm welcome from arrival till departure. Had a swimout room so enjoyed the advantage of jumping in and out of pool without having to pack up everything for just a quick dip. Highly recommend the OAKS and room 20A if available. Enjoyed our time and will be back soon.

Room Tip: Room 20A is a swimout room that gets a fair amount of Sun during most of the day.

Thanks Mark for the feedback. You were blessed with some fantastic weather whilst you were here, so much for the wet season; I think we have missed it this year. Please note we can never guarantee a particular room when booking, but we will log the request and where possible we will meet guest's special requests whenever we can. We look forward to welcoming you back. Hope you can bring the good weather with you again.

We stayed here for a 3 night break just before Easter. We had a ground floor room/apartment which was great for us and the kids. Loads of space and equipment and the patio with the swim up balcony was fantastic for the kids. We hardly made use of the kitchen and only found the laundry facilities as we were packing to leave. We drove up to the main town but not a hassle (if you have a car) but I would have liked to have had time to walk there along the beach. Being close to the far end of 4 mile beach it is just off the main road from Cairns so a great place as a base for the area.

Thanks Andy, we enjoyed having you stay. I love looking out over our pools and seeing Dad’s busy on Daddy duty playing with their kids whilst Mum’s ‘supervise’ from the comfort of their sun lounges, magazines or book in hand. The 45 min beach walk to the main street is gorgeous, with always something to see along the way. Now who wouldn’t like to be a beachcomber! We look forward to having you back one day so you can tick that off your bucket list!

Lovely place to stay. Well appointed 1 bedroom swim-out apartment. Staff very friendly and helpful in recommending places to eat and attractions to visit. Stayed there for 10 nights. Supplies, ie toilet paper, soap, washing powder, dishwashing tabs and other kitchen supplies could be improved upon - i.e. replenished every 2-3 days without having to ask at reception.

We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Port Douglas seems to be developing quite a unique tropical cuisine and dining culture with a number of fabulous restaurants turning out some exiting foods using local tropical fruits and vegetables as well as some fantastic seafood. Or for the less formal occasion, often on Sundays prawns can be bought straight off the back of one of the boats which go down nicely with some crusty rolls and a nice bottle of something chilled!!
With our apartments being self contained with weekly servicing, our philosophy and rates are based on providing a setup stock only. As a backup we do provide additional supplies for a small fee at reception.
My Staff and I would love to look after you again when you next venture to the tropical north.

Warm welcome from Helen on reception . She and her colleague were both really friendly and helpful in confirming our tours, flights, and giving local advice. Our flat for 4 was spacious with a flexible layout and was well equipped with washer, drier, dish washer etc, & was clean and comfortable but had plainish decor. We used the communal barbecue in the central 'cabana' and liked the long pools which meant you could swim properly. The supermarket is a goodish 10 minute walk, but the fish and chip shop is 5 minutes and good for emergency eats. Port Douglas is a 45-50 min step away up the lovely endless beach. Buses seemed to run every 20-30 mins from the Ramada next door and were about AU$4 each person one way. We didn't find much value in buying return tickets as rival bus companies didn't accept each other's tickets. This led us to have an extra 15 min sit outside the Iron Bar waiting for 'our' bus whilst orher buses came and went: there are much worse places in the world to be delayed in! If staying longer than our 4 nights you might want a hire car, but Port Douglas is a quiet and relaxing place, so just go with the flow.
Plus- quiet, friendly, very helpful, nice pool.
Minus- fair step from town, but the bus service was fine. Simple styling and decor.

Thank you David for your feedback especially your comments recognising the assistance provided by Helen on reception. I am pleased your family enjoyed their break at the Oaks Lagoons. The local shuttle is a fantastic way to get around and I agree that until these buses accept each others vouchers, it is better to just jump on the next one that comes along. The walk along the ‘endless’ beach (45 mins at a casual stroll) is a great way to clear the mind and let the winds off the Coral Sea blow those work worries away! The fish &chip shop is one of the best around. I often recommend as a holiday special treat their Supa Trout Burger; a burger filled with coral trout, bacon, avocado, and cheese and then filled with a huge selection of salads. Thank you for staying with us.

Stayed 3 nights staff were friendly. Rooms were spacious and clean with all that is needed in a kitchen. Air con in 3 rooms with overhead fans too. The private plunge pool was lovely, but not so private with guests above whom could see when they looked over their balcony. It is not within walking distance into town so you need a car or there is a shuttle bus that leaves from the hotel next door which was $5 per person.
The only let down is that it does not have a bar or restaurant on site, you could go next door to the Ramada but we found that noisy (lots of children) and poky.
But we had a good relaxing stay.

Thanks for taking the time to provide us with this valuable feedback. Yes you are right these are not private plunge pools though we did change their name 2 years ago. I had hoped all references to the word “private” had been removed from all websites but there must be some references still out there. I welcome feedback about any website that may still call them private so I can update accordingly. We now just refer to them as 1 or 2 bedroom Plunge Pool rooms.

With so many rooms with self catering facilities, a restaurant is not really viable. We like our guests to get out and explore some of the fabulous tropical cuisine available in Port Douglas. My favourite at the moment is the Salsa Bar & Grill.

We hope you can get away form another tropical break sometime soon.
