The Newport on Macrossan

We stayed at this wonderful hotel for 4 nights, and our only regret was that we couldn’t stay longer! Superb (but small) pool area with nice and clean BBQ. Perfect location right in the middle of Port Douglas, but still quiet and very relaxing. We had a big balcony overlooking the pool where we could eat (and drink!) watching the sun go down. /Pontus & Johanna, Sweden

My partner and I stayed at the Newport for a five night holiday. My first experience with the owner, Patrick, was a great one where he showed how obliging he could be. I had wanted to book a superior spa apartment but discovered that they were all booked out for one of the nights we needed to stay, so I rang up and Patrick organised for us to stay in the 2 bed apartment (with one of the rooms locked off) for the same price as the type of room we originally wanted. A great start, and he proved to be just as helpful when booking transfers and tours for us, and let us check out at 11.30am on the day we left.

The apartment was very good - very clean and it had a pretty well equipped kitchen for basic food preparation and cooking (some plastic wrap would've been welcome however, along with a jug to store water in the fridge with). Bathroom was also very clean and quite a good size, with a huge 2 person spa bath and lovely Natio toiletries, which were very welcome! The bedroom was very squishy however, with only enough room for the bed and one bedside table - not great if both people want to read in bed at night as the only light in the room is a single lamp on the one bedside table. There was quite a bit of space in the living area though, so all in all it was pretty good.

One of the best things about the hotel is its location - right on the main street and only a five minute easy stroll to where you can swim on the beach. Lots of other holiday apartments were further away and would be a long walk or shuttle bus ride to town and/or the beach, whereas we had restaurants right outside the door. We thought it might be noisy as our bedroom overlooked the street, but you just close off the louvres on the balcony and you can't hear a thing... it's very quiet. If I come back to Port Douglas I'd be most happy to stay there again.

They say there's no such thing as a bargain and I think 'they're' right'! We stayed in one of the spa studio rooms for 4 nights (all the apartments were fully booked) and it was pretty cramped. I had assumed that a 'studio' would have limited cooking facilities but you just get a kettle and a bar fridge. The bed pretty much takes up the entire bedroom and the small balcony that we did have faced a fence with zero view (room 213), so it all felt rather claustrophobic.

The swimming pool was also pretty compact, and with only about 6 loungers around the pool, filled up quickly.

On the positive, the spa bath was lovely and great to relax in after a hard day out of the reef (which is amazing and an absolute must do when in Port Douglas).

So for $85 a night, you can't really complain, but be aware that it is small, they don't service the rooms and should really only be contemplated for a short stay.

We recently returned from our second stay at The Newport. Our previous visit was in June 2007.
We decided to return for the location which is in the centre of Macrossan Street and everything is within walking distance.
We requested to stay in the same apartment we stayed in the year before at the front no 5.
What can we say about the place, well the apartment was absolutely spotless, the bathroom stocked with Natio products, fluffy fresh towels! Cable Movies!
There are two outdoor areas and the front verandah has louvre windows which you can open and close as you please.
We had been warned by other trip advisors and other visitors that staying in the main street would noisy, perhaps this was an issue at one time but no longer. With the windows closed on the front outdoor verandah each night it was very quiet.
There is a great atmosphere about the place, quiet and serene with a heated pool behind the gate and just outside the front gate you are there amongst it all!
We had a day trip to the reef, swam in the pool and dined out a couple of times.
All in all very relaxing stay and no noise apart from the birds!

Excellent location (I travelled without a car), friendly owners with all the advice you'd want, great amenities (including affordable wireless access and a simple swimming pool)

Very well maintained property, my apartment had everything I needed including a kitchen, LCD TV and comfortable bed.

My family stayed in adjoining rooms at The Newport. One room was a basic hotel room with a king bed, bathroom and small porch. The other had a living room/kitchen and a larger porch in addition to the bed and bath rooms. Everything about this facility was great. We really appreciated the beach towels that were provided. The location is amazing - right in the center of downtown. There was a little noise from a live band at a nearby bar one night, but nothing that kept us awake for too long. The front desk staff was very helpful and gave great recommendations for restaurants and shopping.

We stayed at Newport for seven days recently and were extremely happy with the property. We wanted to stay as close to the main street of Port Douglas, as many of the resort properties are quite a distance from the main street and public transport becomes essential. We also wanted to stay in a property that wasnt expensive but was clean and well equipped. Newport on Macrossan offers all this and more, management (Patrick) is extremely helpful and generous with his assistance. Pool is solar heated, so even if the air temperature dipped to 24 degrees we were able to swim well into the evening. BBQ area is available beside the pool if you want to stay in and eat. We stayed in an apartment style room which was sufficient for light easy meals, balcony with table and chairs was large enough to sit four people comfortably. As the property is in the main street we were concerned about possible street noise, however, this property is well insulated and we never experienced problems with noise. We stayed at the top level of the property and it does necessitate climbing a few stairs, however, we felt any exercise whilst on holidays was perhaps a good thing. Not all rooms are accessed by the stairwell. Cant wait to go back as its not easy to find affordable accommodation in Port Douglas!
