“Very Nice Resort Apartments”
Reviewed June 28, 2008

This property garners mixed reviews; maybe that depends on what the reviewer is looking for? I think it is better suited to families than romantic getaways.

We stayed in a two bedroom "swim-out" apartment for ten nights in April and found it to be ideal for our family of four, inlcuding two children. The design of the aparment was great and it was well equipped with a washer, dryer, iron and ironing board, dishwasher, microwave, fridge and oven.

We loved the "swim-out" feature, but be warned that the pool was quite cool, even in April......

It is true that the apartments are not on the beach, but beaches in Northern Austraila are not swimmable in any case unless they have stinger nets. The beach is great to walk on, but that is where it stops.

The food in the restaurant was simply excellent and the cappucinos wonderful.....

Overall, we would go back without hesitation. Some folks seem to be expecting a Cancun like experience in Port Douglas, and are disappointed, but that is not what Northern Australia and the Sea Temple is all about. if that is what you are looking for, you might be better off at the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast....

We came to Sea Temple for a week from Melbourne, and from the first night have been very unimpressed with the quality of the food and service - I'm actually writing this review from my room on our 2nd day!

We got in late in the afternoon, and while the checkin process was easy and the lady at the front desk was very professional and helpful, it went downhill from there.

We dropped our bags in our room, which was nice (we are staying in the hotel type rooms) then went to the restaurant lounge area. After waiting to be served, I had to go up to the bar to ask for a drink. That's ok, don't have a problem with that. They then served the canopes which were cold and just plain bland.

The dinner was also average, and for $32 for chicken, very poor value.

The next day, and after breakfast in town, we were hoping for more as we sat by the pool. Lot's of kids and fairly noisy, but I wont hold that against the place.

We then ordered a plain burger and Caesar salad - what a mistake! The burger was $14 and Caesar was $15, and both awful. The problem was that the kitchen is miles away, so they have to bring the food from literally 100 metres away, meaning it was cold on arrival. They tried to keep it warm with foil (yes, it looked that bad!) but it just does not work. It took over 40 minutes to arrive, which is too long for a quick bar snack. The Caesar had no anchovies, and they used chicken thighs, which are cheaper and less tasty.

Its about an hour walk from the Port Douglas town, so you're not part of the towns atmosphere.

Anyway, for a 5 star place, I think you'd be better staying elsewhere.

The pictures are beautiful. True to other reviews it is not on the beach. The penthouses are cheaply built and the cushions have never been cleaned. The swim outs are noisey and everyone can see in. Children banging the gates and screaming. Very expensive. Move to the "beach houses". They have own pool and peace and quiet and are better priced. We would only go back to the Beach Houses (no you can not see the beach). Eat in Port Douglas, what wonderful food. Bale is a must do for Dinner, but book early.

  • Liked — Get the Beach House
  • Disliked — Its Location. Far away from town and only a mini bus to take you in. They need their own bus.

Having stayed at Port Douglas last year we decided to go back because we loved the relaxed North Queensland lifestyle. We saw the Sea Temple on Getaway and were sold. It looked beautiful and lived up to our expectations. It is by far one of the nicest looking resorts in Port Douglas. My wife is a Virgo and clean freak so for her to give the thumbs up means alot. The pool is fantastic (as we have a 9 and 7 yo ) so we spent a lot of time in the large spa and around the pool bar. The rooms were large enough for an apartment complex and the kitchen well set out. The staff were al friendly but the kids were especially impressed with Pan, the pool barman who was a "mixologist" and managed to throw a few bottles around and make a mean kids mocktail. A short pleasant walk through the rainforest to the beach and to collect coconuts filled the kids days. We will be back.

Myself and my partner stayed here for 4 nights and intended to stay longer if we liked it, we came up from Sydney to get some sun and just wanted to relax. We booked here based on the reviews and more importantly the little "lie" that it was beach front.
Its not, the complex of apts are surrounded by a wall and if you want to walk to the beach you go outside the complex. So that was the first thing that annoyed us, there is one restaurant/bar there and a small bar only open until 6ish by the pool.
So if you wanted to sit out of an evening and relax etc, what you would expect from a hotel this does not exist. You have a main lobby and pretty much thats it, as everyone has cooking facilities its really nothing more than a complex of privately owned and rented out apts. We went for the studio thinking that amenities were available to us, how wrong were we.
All on all it is trying to be something its not, the staff on our departure asked my partner was he happy etc and it said no, so you would think that the staff would ask why and potentially apologise, she said "oh was it the weather", enough said. We did not think there was much point trying to do anything else but leave.
Try and stay nearer to Port Douglas or even try Palm Cove which was our original option.
Also when you get to the airport there is only one shuttle bus service allowed in the airport which is about $70 return, try [-] much cheaper

My sister and I stayed for 4 nights at the Sea Temple. From the first moment we arrived we just loved it all. The check-in process was great - the lady could not have been more friendly or helpful. We found our room without any problem with plenty of car parking spots for our hire car.

The room was superb - we chose the 2 bedroom swimout (or swim-in if you are in the pool!!) which was exactly what we wanted - clean, spacious and comfortable. We each had our own bedroom and bathroom which great. The pool we used a lot - it is still warm enough in May to swim. The pool really is something to be seen. The resort's Spa was lovely and the staff very professional.

The only comment we would make about the Sea Temple is that you need to be careful about the room you are given depending on the season - some of the rooms definately had a lot more sunshine on the sun lounges than others as the sun is quite low in May. We soon learned that we had to wait until after 1pm before we had any sun on our own sunlounges. Some had sun only for a short time (if any) - it is worth asking for a room with a deck that will catch the sunshine.

Also on checkout someone else had assigned 2 drinks to our room and luckily I picked it up - the lady checking us out (the same lovely friendly lady who checked us in) was so helpful and immediately took off the extra 2 drinks with no questions asked.

Overall I would highly recommend the Sea Temple when in Port Douglas. We had a quick look at others while we were there and were so pleased with our choice - we definately will try to go abck again, Well done Sea Temple.
