Reef Resort Port Douglas

I stayed at the resort for 4 nights in June 08. I was aware that the resort was being renovated and secured a very cheap $98 per night deal through wotif.com

I was under the impression, from their own website that by late June 08 most of the removations would be finished. This was not the case - there was stuff everywhere and only about half of the villas had been reburbished. The resort is ab absolute maze. There are 180 villas scattered randomly over a site with connecting, winding roads in between. Once we checked in it took us 10 minutes, with a map, and clear directions, to find our villa.

I had requested a refurbished villas (and this was confirmed) but was given an older style and they do look pretty tired, hence the refurb. They do have king size beds, which is a rarity these days!

I contacted reception and asked for a refubished one, and was quickly given another one of the other side of the resort. This was away from the pools, but I wasnt too fussed. The refurbished ones are really nice and modern but I got the feeling someone from head office ordered 180 of everything from a catalogue without testing or checking things. The LCD TVs are very, very nice but the sofas, while stylish, are incredibly uncomfortable and feel like a church pew. The kitchen was nice and modern and clean, as were the bathrooms. Everything seems like a slightly odd design because they dont use the space all that well and have gone for options that look good, over options that are practical and functional (such as the sofa). Kitchen is very well stocked with cultlery and crockery.

There is nothing amazing about this place and I would hesitate to even call it a resort. The pools are nothing amazing, the service at the place is almost non-existant, andit certainly doesnt have the 'wow factor' (drive past the Sea Temple if you want the wow factor). But is is an extremely good value villa complex with large, modern, quiet facilities. I would stay there again for the great value, but its certainly not the type of place for a honeymoon or anything.

Our family took our first multi-generational vacation up to Port Douglas and the GBF when my husband's parents came to visit us and our two young kids after our move from the U.S. to Sydney. We were looking to stay in one condo with big kitchen and laundry, so Rendezvous Reef was a good option. It was extremely affordable and only about 1km outside of the main "restaurant row" in Port Douglas. The website we booked on was very clear that the hotel was undergoing renovations (and I know that's why we got a 3 bedroom condo for $175/night).

That said, the property is aging and we had some issues in our room with the faucets spraying water and the laundry dryer precariously hanging off the wall, and some little flies (although I do think that you find those in any tropical property that isn't using napalm to kill everything in sight -- the trade off of being environmentally aware I guess...) The staff is extremely helpful and was willing to deal quickly with any issues that we had and with a friendly smile, which made our stay very pleasant despite the issues.

The swimming pools are older, but very clean and our kids loved the one with the swim-through cave and whirlpool. The hotel will also arrange bike rentals door to door, and there is a free or inexpensive shuttle bus into town or to a few local attractions at the resort entrance. Ask to stay in the newer (I think they call it "deluxe") section of the resort as you will be farther away from the renovations going on in one of the older phases of the development. We did walk across the street to use the restaurant at another resort (Treetops or Treehouse?) b/c Rendezvous Reef's was closed for renovations. We were not overly impressed with the restaurant, pool or grounds there.

Some of the charm of Port Douglas is that it is not full of brand new high rise hotels, but some of the properties are seeming a bit tired. But it is the best place to go out to the reef as many of the boats that go to the outer reefs are based up here, and you will be very close to the Daintree Rainforest and Mosman Gorge.

Have just returned from Port Douglas. Had a fab week at the Rendezvous. On arrival we thought we had arrived at a building site!!We were aware that they are currently renovating all of their villas. There are more builders around than guests. During our stay we had a lovely 1 bedroom villa with direct entrance to a pool. I counted 12 steps from our door to the pool!! Pool was a freeform style with a waterfall. It was well maintained however a bit "tired". We did not see ANY OTHER guests around while we were there. We had all amenities to ourselves. The fact that the resort was openly advertising that they were constructing a huge $8 million dollar refurbishment must have kept people away.
It was our lucky week. We had such a great time.
We also had a look at the Sheraton Mirage. This place was REALLY tired. Pools were great but had paint missing at places. The place seemed to be in a timewarp, 80's. In its day you could tell that it would have been THE place. But in 2008, it needs a full facelift!!
Otherwise Port Douglas is slow paced, quaint and expensive. Food was incredibly expensive. We did our shopping at Coles in town and rode our bikes back to the resort about 10min. Port Douglas is a great biking town very flat. We paid $19 per day for biike hire, a bit steep..You can also purchase bus passes that will take you from resort to town. Very handy.
All in all had a Fantastic week in Port Douglas.

My husband and I stayed here on our wedding anniversary in 2006. We stayed there for 6 days and for 3 of those days we did not have hot water in our room. When we told reception they said that there was no other clean rooms for us to transfer to and that we had to wait.. 3 days with NO HOT WATER! anyway we finally got moved accross to another room but we wanted compensation as we had paid something like $140 (cant quite remember now but it was around that price) per night. Each time we wanted to speak with the manager he/she was conveniently NOT there! I also sent the HQ of the Rendezvous hotel chain an email and heard NOTHING back. to top that off the phone in our unit did not even work! that is until we got moved to another room.. NOT worth the money we paid! I will never go back there. We were completely ignored!

It was the best price i found for a good accommodation in Port Douglas. We had our own villa, with parking lot, nice surrounded by forest. The walk to the beach is not the best, and little far form town. However, i recomend this place as it was very nice, quite and affordable.

Had a great 9 night stay here, excellent value for money. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, full kitchen is very handy and balconys are always nice. We loved the pools and tropical garden setting as well the bar/restaurant. The friendly barman also makes great cocktails. So if your looking for a very reasonably priced place to stay than Rendevous is definetely worth checking out.

Couldn't believe what a great resort this is at such a cheap price. We booked a 1 bedroom apartment for 9 nights and upon arrival were given a 2 bedroom apartment. The resort is great and all of the staff are helpfull and friendly. The apartments are clean and fully self contained. The resort has 3 different pools which are beautiful so we were spoilt for choice. Located a 5 minute drive from town, which is no problem if you dont have a car as there are shuttle buses that pick you up from reception and run in and out of town every 15 minutes! The resort also has resturant and bar and there are lots of eating out options in town too for every budget. Or you can cook you own meals in the apartment as it has a full kitchen. There is also a BBQ area in the resort. The apartment had 2 storeys, with a balcony upstairs and a door leading outside to a great pool downstairs, and are very spacious. Will definatly be back!
