I had been planning a return to Port Douglas for some time. A friend visiting from the US gave me a great excuse. Anyway, while searching for places to stay I was surfing out on ebay.com.au and found a few properties for rent. I found the Tropic Sands and it's owners John and Shirley Carney. I emailed John and got a great rate (less than $100 per night) staying right next to the Port Douglas township, located at the intersection of Davidson and Mowbray. From this intersection you go east directly to the beach - west to go to the marina - and to the north is Macrossan Street. On Macrossan Street you'll find all of the restaurants, pubs, cafes, shops, galleries, spas, etc.... In the morning's walk a block north and stop in at Brumby's Bakery. The chili sausage rolls were great.

As for the property itself... We stayed in room 8 - which is located on level one (2nd floor for US guests) at the front of the building and overlooking the pool. The traffic noise was minimal, but the sounds of nature were very loud. There is a flying fox (bat) colony that lives in the Port Douglas area and they all congregated in the tree's outside my bedroom window on the second night of our stay. They all went bezerk at about 4:10am and must have woken up half of Port Douglas. Anyway, the apartment is a one bedroom with kitchen. The kitchen had all the utensils to prepare meals. Also - John and Shirley are very thoughtful as there was a full pitcher of water in the refrigerator waiting for us. The place was very clean - and furnishings undamaged/well maintained. John left us a note with his mobile phone number to call if we had any problems during our stay. I rated this property excellent because of the excellent rates, the excellant location and the excellent level of personal customer service.

There are property managers on site and they provide all of the normal tour information / booking services. If you are considering renting a car you will even get a discount at the Lattitude 16 Car Rental (next to Thrifty on Macrossan Street) - since the Tropic Sands is a Lattitude 16 property. Rent a car and drive to Kuranda and check out the Butteryfly Sanctuary - or drive up to Cape Tribulation.

When travelling to Port Douglas consider the location of your accommodation - the weather conditions in the tropics (hot sun, high humidity, sudden rain showers, etc...) will have an impact on your walk into the township. Sunscreen and hats are essential! Dress in a natural fabrics (cotton/hemp).

This was our second time to stay at Tropic Sands and we would return there again. Although it is a relatively simple property it is extremely well kept and managed and the location is terrific. The apartments are very pleasant, quiet, and quite private and perfect for a beach vacation. I highly recommend Tropic Sands.

What a pleasant surprise!. Lovely one bedroom apartment, lots of space in the kitchen and separate laundry. Manager was really helpful and everything was so close - didn't use the car at all. Didn't expect to get something this nice for the price.

On first sight this did not seem to come up to our expectations. However after seeing our room and it's close proximity to the centre of Port Douglas we were very happy for the three nights we spent there. The room had all you could wish for with a kitchen and lounge area, en-suite with double bed and a balcony.
The property had a swimming pool with a barbecue area alongside. It was very convenient for walking in to Port Douglas centre and located at the end of the main road from the A1 into Port Douglas. There is plenty of underground parking (free).

What a pleasant surprise -- we found the Tropic Sands well worth the money we paid. The only disappointment was the pool...much smaller than it appears in the brochure picture and web site. Our apartment was very clean. However, there were lots of little ants lived in the master bedroom and bathroom. The apartments only get cleaned when you leave, so don't count on someone else making your bed each day...or changing the towels. You're not supposed to remove the towels from the rooms, so you may need a spare if you're planning on going (a short walk) to the beach. If you want to save a little $, this is the place to cook your own meal. The grocery store (Coles) is about a 7 minute walk, and the kitchen and pots/pans are more than adequate. Denise is a wonderful hostess, and will point you in the right direction for activities and restaurants. We were very glad we stayed in Port Douglas rather than Daintree or Cape Tribulation...there isn't much up there aside from your resort. Port Douglas is a charming town. Look for deals, or Standby Rates, during the low season. These rates are good deals for travelers willing to risk showing up without a reservation. It would have dropped our nightly charge by A$30/nt if we'd just shown up. Watch out for speeding tickets taken from cameras...seems the police nab speeders with cameras positioned along the road between Cairns and Port Douglas (and all sorts of places around the country as well, according to the signs posted).

While vacationing in Port Douglas in May 2005, we stayed at Tropic Sands for 4 nights and found the apartment to be very clean and convenient to the main restaurants and supermarket in Port Douglas (Macrossan St, 2 blocks away) as well as Marina Mirage (3 – 4 blocks away), where the catamarans leave for the Great Barrier Reef trips. Its handy to be able to walk to the supermarket to buy things to cook for dinner as eating out every night in Port Douglas can be expensive (main meals are generally A$25-30). The apartment complex is also far away enough from the main road so that it's not too noisy from all the restaurants and bars.

The apartment complex have a smallish but clean freshwater pool and a BBQ, and the floor plan is exactly the same as on the website. The plumbing was good and the AC kept the place nice and cool.

There is parking downstairs if you rent a car (the Avis office is only 3 blocks away too) but we found that with having day trips to the reef, we didn’t need the car for so many days. Instead, we just hired a car for the drive from Cairns airport to Port Douglas and then rehired again when we wanted to drive up to the rainforest ourselves. Denise, the owner was very friendly and helpful. For the price we paid, it was a great value and definitely better than expected.
