We stayed 5 nights mid December & found the hotel & staff to be excellent.Great location, beach & main bars/ restaurant areas within 10 minute walk. The hot tub (which was refreshingly cool) was a great place to drink a cold one upon returning to the hotel after a busy day on the reef/ rainforest.Room was spacious, 3 ceiling fans & had AC in bathroom area.Balcony was great with pool views.Hotel almost empty, only saw 4 other rooms being used, which meant we had pool & hot tub to ourselves in the evening. If we ever visit port again we will stay at Hibiscus.

We were a little disappointed in the Hibiscus. When we were asked if we wanted help with our bags we didn't realise that we needed to carry them up 3 flights of stairs!!

The carparks are also very small and we had difficulty parking our hired camry.

The room setup is very odd - a very long room with kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom from the entrance door. Being September it was very hot and humid and the air con was in the bathroom! There were fans in the lounge and bedroom but they weren't doing a lot.

Also the bathroom was tiny with half a bath with a shower over the top and no shower curtain - the floor got wet every time we showered and then froze when we got out of the shower due to the air con.

I'm sure that there are better places in Port for the same $ value

This hotel is built on a very small site. If you could stretch the
site out about 3 or 4 times, to make it more open, it woud be great.Everything is too close together, and the lush tropical foliage blocks a lot of views from the rooms. There are walkways up to each room, and quite a lot of steps. It would be impossible for a disabled or wheelchair bound person. There is very little privacy, and it is easy to look in to any of the rooms. We were really lucky to have a corner room on the top floor. This gave us added privacy plus windows on the side, not just the back and front, as most rooms had. Our room was dark enough, despite the extra windows, so I imagine other rooms ( not on a corner or end) must have been really dark inside.
Despite all this. the decor in the room was lovely. Really cosy and spacious at the same time! The theme is balinese with dark wood furniture. There is a good sized kitchen area, a comfy lounge, lovely bedroom and well fitted bathroom.Everything is kept clean and we could not fault the service. Also a very private balcony on our one, though most weren't so private. Due to all the foliage you did not get any sun on the balcony.
The 2 pools are really small. One big pool would have been better. It is difficult to sunbathe here as most of the decking around the pool is in shade, due to the small size of the area and the foliage.
The hotel is in a great position and you can walk to all the shops, restuarants, marina and to 4 Mile beach. This is it's best quality.
There is no evening restuarant or bar, in the hotel which means there is very little atmosphere to the place.
We loved Port Douglas but would not stay at this hotel again. There is a superb hotel on 4 Mile beach with masses of lagoon pools around it. We would choose that one next time.

Hibiscus was ok, but not what we were expecting. The location was fantastic and perhaps it was the best thing about Hibiscus - it was a very short walk to shops, restaurants, beach, and the marina. The most disappointing thing we found was that Hibiscus ISN'T a resort!! It's basically just serviced apartments. There are no luxuries or nice touches, and you have to pay for everything (like room cleaning, clean towels, using the safe in your room, breakfast).

So, we were pretty disappointed - we had planned and paid for a holiday of lazing by a nice pool sipping cocktails and being able to grab a bite to eat by the pool occasionally- what we got was an apartment with a kitchenette, a small pool area that was crowded when four people were around, a tv that didn't work (and staff refused to fix or substitute), and pretty detached and sometimes rude service from the staff when we made enquiries.

We stayed a week at the start of the jelly fish season, so swimming at the beach wasn't an option - we stayed by the pool most days, which became crowded when there was only a couple of other people by the pool too. When there was more than four people by the pool Hibiscus became very noisy and not relaxing at all.

I'd recommend Hibiscus for people with young children or anyone who likes small and noisy pool areas. If you're looking for a resort to relax and indulge - I wouldn't recommend Hibiscus. Similarly, if you're looking for a serviced apartment, there are heaps of cheaper options that are in as good a location.

I think we had a good holiday in spite of Hibiscus, rather than because of our stay there. I wouldn't go back again - i'd spend more on an actual resort (like the sheraton), or i'd spend less on a different serviced apartment and go at a time of year when we'd be able to spend our days swimming at the beach.

Hibiscus Gardens was one of six hotels we stayed in during our Honeymoon to Australia. It is a quick walk to the beach and to shops and restaurants. The room was nice and we were given a bottle of champagne and some nice spa products for a honeymoon treat. The 2 pool areas are pleasant and front dest staff was always helpful.

  • Liked — Nice room and extras for Honeymoon!
  • Disliked — Some rooms right oevr parking garage and could be noisy when they are cleaning.

The location was great - minutes from the shops/restaurants and the beach. Our family of 4 stayed in a 2-bedroom apartment which was very comfortable and well furnished and equipped. As we were on the 2nd floor, though it was a little noisy at times from traffic and very rowdy pedestrians, we didn't mind it too much.
The pools were rather small and as they were not heated, we found them too cold. In any event, as our days were packed with trips and activities, this was not an issue for us.
What we didn't like about this establishment was that it charged for using the safe in the apartment itself!! I can't remember the exact rates now - but it was around $4.40 a day. Bearing in mind that the safe is already installed in the room and that almost all guests would want to use it, I don't see how an additional charge can be justified for simply letting us have the key for it!
If we're in PD again, though we wouldn't mind staying at Hibiscus once more, I would probably search around and give another hotel a try.

My boyfriend and I recently returned from a 7 night stay at the Hibiscus Resort. Port Douglas is an absolutely beautiful, relaxing place for a holiday and Hibiscus Resort was the perfect place for us to stay.

I spent many nights on the internet researching places to stay (there seems to be thousands!) and finally decided on the Hibiscus after reading many good reviews on this site. Being our first time to PD, I was a little unsure that we had made the right decision, but as soon as we arrived I knew we had. The Resort is set in a lush tropical garden which really adds to the beauty of the place. We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment on the third floor (top floor) which was perfect for us - spacious yet cosy, quality furnishings, comfortable bed and a balcony with a view over the pool and distant mountains (Sitting on the balcony amongst the tropical palms, you feel as though you are in a tree house). The apartment had everything we needed, was very clean and cool (a/c and three celing fans - one in the bedroom, living room and balcony).

The location of Hibiscus is ideal - so close to Macrossan St (where the action is), the beach and Marina. We did not rent a car for our holiday and there was never a moment that we wished we had.

The staff and service was fine. We did not have a lot to do with them actually - which suits us as we like our privacy. On the odd occasion that we required assistance (ie to order some beer to the room! the service was very quick and professional).

The only downside for us was that the pools were not heated. You could still swim in them, but being winter, the water was quite cold. The room we chose to stay in did not have a spa (you can book rooms that have one), as I had imagined that there would be a communal jacuzzi by the pool, but there wasn't. However, the pool setting is fantastic and I spent many hours relaxing on a deck chair by the pool soaking up the atmosphere.

The hard part was leaving; at the end of our 7 night stay we wished we could have extended our stay another week!
