Mantra Aqueous On Port
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 26, 2007

This block of apartments is just the way it looks on the website. If you are looking for an apartment in Port Douglas I can recommend the Mantra Aqueous.

Its very close to restaurants, town etc, and an easy walk to the beach. Zinc restaurant is next door, as is the local bakery, which has good rolls, pies and sausage rolls.

The apartments run up the middle of the block of land, and on either side are 4 pools. This means you can always find either shade or sun, depending upon what you are after. The pools are quite deep, and on one side are the swim-up rooms, on the other a deck. Plenty of chairs etc.

I would not take very small children to this resort, as there is no shallow end in any of the pools. This means you have to be in the water with them at all times - boring for parents who want a break I think.

The two BBQ areas are kept clean and tidy, and have plenty of space. There are also tables and chairs in this area.

The rooms we had were well set out, spacious and plenty of ameneties. Looked just like the website. We booked an appartment, as other reviews had mentioned the hotel rooms were too small. Judging by the size I would imagine this is right.

This resort would really suite a group of friends going to port douglas for a few days. You can save money by booking adjoining apartment and hotel room, and just use the one kitchen.

If you are after luxury and service though, this is not that kind of resort, its more self service.

Maker sure you buy some mosquito spray and use it before you go to bed. It is the tropics.

Another thing we liked was that the complex is very private, secure underground parking, and a security entrance by night.

Port douglas restaurants we recommend: Mango Jam for the whole family, Zinc great food but a bit pricey, On the Inlet for really good seafood - go early. Wicked Ice cream is wonderfull.

Go to the markets on Sunday morning (early) the locals love a chat. You can buy lovely jewelery there, but stick to small stallholders as I saw lots of imported Chinese jewelery on the big stalls. Some interesting artists at this markets also. If heat is getting to you by this time, buy one of the coolers for around your neck. We used them in 35-40 degrees heat in Spain and they really work.

If you have time to drive to the boulders (south of Cairns) its is truley a lovely walk through the rainforest, we have been there twice and seen the brilliant blue butterflys both times. That trip can take in Mission Beach and Dunk Island if you time it right. But remember, as we told an Irish tourist - no swimming in the rivers up there! If you don't drown, the crocs will get you.

Pity about the whingers and whiners who post their opinions but neglect to dwell on the positives.
We had a couple of weeks in a room up on the top floor, near the front of the property.
The kitchen was great with modern appliances and stone benchtops. The addition of the laundry in it's own cupboard was better than being in a bathroom as is the case with many other places.
The location is fantastic. Take your pick, down the street, or to the beach. The Brumby (top man John!!) bakery next door is handy, and the Zincs restaurant on the corner does great dinner and some of PD's best coffee. A cheap eat is to go to the Coles supermarket ( a short 5-10 min walk) and grab some salad and meat. The BBQ's near the pool are very clean and effective.
All in all, we would recommend this property to anyone.

My wife and I just got back from staying at Aqueous Nov, 20th - 25th. Loved the location - we reserved a 1 Bdrm swim-up Spa Room. The room was nice - roomy but with little to no closet/drawer space for clothes - not a big deal. Pool was clean and not crowded. The best attribute of this hotel was location, location! Within a nice short walk (5 min) to downtown Port Doulgas, 10 min walk to the Marina and 5 min walk to 4-mile Beach - Perfect location. Port Douglas is easy to walk and - no need for a car hire. If you need to hire a car, there a car hires in town. Restaurants: Salsa, Mango Jam, Thai, Micheangelos - all were great. If you Dive, go with Silver Sonic (not Quicksilver boat), we also dove with Haba - very crowded. All the boats are about the same price and they all carry 100+ passengers.

Just returned after staying at the Mantra Aqueous for 5 days. When we arrived we were shown into our Hotel Spa swim up room which was tiny! There was barely room to manouvere around the bed (I have bruises on my knees to prove it) - it would not be suitable for more than a night's stay. When we checked with the reception staff they did have a one bedroom unit available so we upgraded to that. Unfortunately we had to miss out on the swim up part but it was definitely worth it. The one bedroom unit was quite spacious and had a great fully equipped kitchen and laundry. Each unit has a balcony with a spa. The photos on Stella's website are quite accurate - the resort does look lovely. The room furnishings are starting to look well used though (particularly the lounge). Also the zip up bed was uncomfortable - I ended up with a back ache every morning. Something small but I found it annoying - there were no tissues in the bathroom which I thought was poor for a resort claiming to be 4.5 stars. Also we didn't have any idea when housekeeping was coming to clean - some days they changed the towels and toiletries, some days emptied the garbage bin, some days emptied just the dishwasher.

The reception staff were delightful and extremely helpful - they are a credit to the place. They were more than happy to help book tours and transfers. The restaurant Zinc next door was expensive but well worth the $80 we payed for a meal for two. Brumby's bakery is also right next door. Four Mile beach is about a 3 minute walk away and the downtown part of Port Douglas about 3 minutes inthe other direction. The marina was about a 10 minute walk. We didn't have a car while in Port Douglas. I am glad we didn't hire one as eveything was so convenient. The local buses run every 15 minutes or so if you wanted to go further afield (like to the Sheraton or Rainforest Habitat). It is failry expensive for what and there is certainly cheaper in Port Douglas but the location was great.

We stayed at the Aqueous in April 2006. The apartment was lovely, very clean and spacious and overlooking one of the pools. Had a spa on the balcony which was bliss. It is right in the heart of Port Douglas, which was very handy, you could walk to restaurants, supermarket or the beach. No need for a car. Had a large balcony which was good as it rained quite a bit while we there, but most of the time it would stay dry.

We got a great deal through a Breakfree voucher - $500AU for a 7 night stay in a 2 bedroom apartment. The accommodation was definitely worth WAY more than this, in our opinion. The apartment was spotless and so well set up - the 2 bedroom apartments are actually a hotel room & a 1 bedroom apartment adjoined by a little foyer, so you can open up the internal doors and make it a 2 bedroom apartment, but with added bonuses like 2 bathrooms, 2 balconies and 2 spa baths - not to forget privacy when you want it. It was a great set up for us, which was a couple and a mother and daughter.

The apartment had everything we needed when we wanted to cook meals, down to the things often missing from self-contained places, such as cheese graters and wooden spoons. It was modern and nicely decorated. It was in a perfect location, practically on the corner of Macrossan St and close to the beach. The 4 pools were always spotless, as were the bbq's. Make sure you have a warm spa on your balcony at night and then run down and jump in the pool! The toiletries in the bathrooms were nice touches. The only small oversight was that our apartment didn't get cleaned - it was supposed to be on day 4 - but it really wasn't a worry, or else we would have reminded them. Lisa at the desk was always helpful & friendly.

We'd definitely, definitely stay here again and hope to one day soon!

We have just come back from a week long stay at the aqueous and we loved it. We stayed in an apartment room and everything was new and clean. It was great being so well equipped-dishwasher, washing machine, drier, all mod cons, but of course my favourite was the jacuzzi on the deck which we used every night.

It was so close to town that we just had to stroll a minute or so onto Macrossan street where we could choose which restaurant to eat at that night. The staff were really helpful in planning our activities.

The pools were great, 4 to choose from so you could always be on the sunny side of the complex.

We're looking forward to a return trip.
