I stayed with a family member at this resort for four nights in late November. Overall I was very impressed with the place, with only a few minor things to note. First of all, the location is perfect. Mantra Aqueous on Port is situated literally right around the corner from Macrossan Street, the main street of Port Douglas, so you only had to walk for two minutes before an array of shops, cafes and restaurants were at your doorstep. There's also a Brumby's bakery next door to the hotel, which was fantastic if we wanted to pop down for some hot fresh bread in the morning for breakfast. It's only a one-minute walk to Four Mile Beach too, so heading down for a morning walk or swim couldn't be easier.

Secondly, the rooms are well-appointed and clean. We booked a one bedroom apartment with twin beds, and we were very happy with what we got. There were two air-conditioning systems in the living room/kitchen area and the bedroom, lots of crockery, cutlery and glasses in the kitchen drawers and cupboards, tea and coffee bags were always stocked full, and a nice balcony overlooking the pool. We got a daily room service free of charge with our deal (daily service is usually for a fee; standard there is for servicing every 3 days) and when we arrived back each day the housecleaning staff had the apartment looking immaculate. The bathroom was very clean and well-appointed, and we always had plenty of towels provided (bit small, but for 2 people it's definitely sufficient).

There are only two gripes I had with the room. First, our room was on the second floor, and for 1 of the nights we had a rowdy bunch staying on the top floor above us who stayed up very late drinking well into the night. Their noise travelled down into our room quite audibly, which wasn't helped by the fact that the blinds in the bedroom are not shielded by a window; they simply open out into the air. I guess it was just bad luck that they happened to be staying above us, but for peace of mind request a room on the top floor so that you don't catch any noise.

Thirdly - the pools are fantastic! I made use of the pool (on our side, there are four) every day right on opening time at 8.00am each day, and it was always clean and only once did I have to share it with other guests. Most people were pretty good and ventured down when no one else was in the pool, so often anyone who swam got it to themselves. A note to anyone considering a swim-up room though (which is a room on the bottom floor where you can literally walk down into the pool from outside your room) - while it's very convenient, the people on the bottom floor had guests swimming past their room all day long so if you'd rather not have that then stay on the 2nd or top floor.

Finally, we found the reception staff to be very helpful. Any questions we had they answered, and they were very knowledgeable about trips and sightseeing activities on offer in the area. We booked a day trip through the hotel and the whole thing went seamlessly - a shuttle bus collected us and dropped us off at the hotel and it couldn't have gone better.

Overall I had a great stay at this hotel and I'll be staying there again when I return to Port Douglas.

There are some mixed reviews about this hotel, but based on the five days we spent at Mantra Aqueous over the New Year, I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Despite being a young group of travellers, we were treated courteously from the moment we checked in, and were left to enjoy the features of the hotel, which are many. We stayed in an ground floor apartment which was linked to a separate hotel room (there were five us in in total).

Aqueous is situated just off Macrossan st, which means all of the local restaurants, shops and bars are a few minutes walk away at most. While there are many hotels in this area, there are also many situated well outside the main strip, and these would be be inconvenient in my opinion if you wished to eat out regularly and see the sights.

The pools at Aqueous are among the best I've seen - each "quarter" of the hotel has its own long (and deep) pool with inbuilt spa, and these are additional to the private outdoor spas which come with many of the rooms. We had swim up access which made the facilities even more enjoyable. If you are staying with a group and enjoy swimming I strongly suggest this option.

The staff were unfailingly helpful, particularly when we had to change rooms suddenly because of storm damage. We were given an upgrade to an apartment on a higher floor away from our friends, but as the room was so nice we didn't mind. The decor in both the apartments and hotel rooms is very modern and tasteful, and the apartment kitchen, lounge and laundry facilities are excellent. Each room is also fitted out with a large plasma screen, which I thought was a nice touch.

Tours can be organised and paid for easily via reception, and the staff were happy to call several operators to find the options which best suited our timetable and budget.

The hotel hallways are a little drab (and cruise ship like), but this is the tiniest of quibbles. Aqueous is a well run, relaxing and beautifully decked out hotel that I would strongly recommend to family and friends wanting to enjoy a trip to Port Douglas.

My partner and I booked in for a long weekend recently, and stayed at the Mantra Aqueous - after reading the last few reviews I very nearly cancelled the booking and went elsewhere - however, our experience was overall very positive.

The hotel is centrally located, which was ideal as we were able to take a short walk to everwhere and anywhere we wanted to go. All of the recommended restaurants were within 5 minutes of our door.

The room itself was quite small (Hotel Spa Room) however, the bed was comfortable, all the amenities worked, and for the price we paid, very worthy. The spa on the verhanda did take overly long to fill, however, with no plans or time limitations, this was not a problem for us. The 4 large pools were clean and the perfect temperature!

The staff were lovely - though they did recognise that we were an 'Industry Couple' so perhaps that helped. The room was not serviced, but we were advised of this at check in so it was not an issue.

All in all, we had a wonderful stay, and would readily return.

We stayed at the Mantra Aqueous for 3 nights in January. Since our trip involved staying in a number of different places around Port Douglas, Palm Cove and Cairns, we had high expectations. This was our most expensive room and we went for a studio with a spa. Yet, for being the most expensive room - it was the most disappointing.

The room was dirty, tired and old. It was classed as an "apartment" but it was a room. We discovered that by calling rooms "apartments" hotels in the area the hotels do not service the rooms daily. There were ants crawling up and down the walls and the bathroom was not very clean.

The outdoor spa was nice, but we discovered that it took too long to fill up and spent most of the time in the spas in the pool. The pool was the only good thing about the hotel, so we spent all our time there just to get away from the awful room.

The only other good thing about this hotel is the location. It is close to the centre of town.

Everything else was a disappointment.
