This was our 3rd time to Port Douglas in 3 years, we have stayed at different apartment complexes each time, one being the Coconut Grove (Honeymoon), which is why we have been back, as we love Port!
We stayed at the Mantra Aqueous for 11 nights in a one bedroom apartment on the 02nd Floor (above the swim-out rooms on the northern side), we found the room very clean, tidy and efficient. Having a fully kitted out Kitchen and Laundry is so useful, we washed our clothes daily and cooked meals here and there.
Upon arrival at the Mantra about 4pm on the Saturday, we were given our key to our room, after being up from 3.30am (NZ time) and 7 hours spent flying, all we wanted to do was freshen up, go have a drink and something to eat at the Rattle & Hum Bar to watch the Crusaders Game... When we entered our room, we realised it hadn't been cleaned from the previous people, there were towels all over the bathroom floor, the bed hadn't been made and the rubbish bin was over flowing with wine bottles on the floor. My Husband went down to reception to advise the girl (Emily), who was very disappointed and apologetic. We were told to leave our luggage in the room and about 5min later the girls came in to clean the room, who were also very apologetic. We walked over to the bottle shop, grabbed a bottle of Bubbles and sat at the BBQ area till our room was cleaned. Emily was lovely and gave us 2 glasses to drink our Bubbles, so all in all, it was dealt with quickly and professionally, we also got Free use of the room safe ($20), as compensation for our room not being cleaned upon arrival, which was a very nice gesture.
The Spa Pool, or should I say Spa BATH outside on the deck of apartment, was well, interesting, it took forever to fill and once you sit in, it's quite shallow, very safe and good for kids, however, it took nearly 30-40min to fill, lol - We only used this once, wasn't a biggie at all, just very odd!
The wooden shutters, we found were quite good, as we could open them and lock the room, so we're getting fresh air into the apartment, also good when getting out of the shower, as you were still very hot, so having the bathroom door open and the shutters open in the bedroom was good for me (personally), cooled me down a bit and didn't feel so sticky!
At about 10am/11am most mornings, we would go down by the Pool to read our books and sunbathe, the southern side got most of the morning/afternoon sun, with the northern side getting the late afternoon/evening sun. The Pool was quite cold, however, as im not one to swim, my Husband got in and did laps (training for Ironman). The only complaint i would have about the southern side (nitpicking), is the noise that comes from the complex next door (Verandahs), as their Pool is right over the fence, which meant you could constantly hear babies & kids skylarking and Adults talking - it didn't bother me, however, it was just strange to have one noisy complex, while you're sunbathing in peace (or trying to).
We picked the best time to go as we had 25-28 degrees everyday, getting up at 6am for a run down four mile beach or run to the look out was spectacular, everyone you pass is so friendly and they always smile or say "Hello", or "Good Morning".
Location is great, love walking past all the shops everyday, if you walk down the road 4-5 times a day like we did, it's actually good for you, I am sure I lost a kilo or 2, even with all the drinking and eating I did :o)
The Staff at the Mantra always looked so happy, smiley and always greeted you when walking in or out of the reception area. Emily confirmed our transfers for us before leaving as were leaving before reception opened!
Was sad to leave, as i feel Port is my 02nd home and we wouldn't hesitate in staying at the Mantra again, we're even hoping to go back next August for longer and booking the Mantra again! We normally stay 14-15 nights, this time was a little shorter and we both felt we could've stayed longer as the weather was amazing and the room we had was comfortable enough to laze around and watch TV, also sitting on the deck having a wine and a bite to eat... never mind! I could live in Port quite easily, it's such a friendly thriving little town.. though it did bug me when I would see people who looked so grumpy, as why, you're in Port :o)
