“Really Lovely Retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2014

I have been lucky enough to have stayed at The Retreat during January and was very impressed. My room was top level over looking the pool with a lovely balcony set amongt the trees and birds. My room was spacious as was the ensuite and the kitchenette meet my needs very adequately. The hosts very friendly and arriving after hours I was greeted with a knock on my door by the hosts welocming me - a very lovely touch. I loved the pool... loved being able to "Lap it up" and relaxing by the pool amongst the tropical vegetation - just an ideal way to be in paradise. The proxminty to everything was great. Close to the marina, Macrossan St shopping and the beach. All were frequented very easily and often!. A lovely little retreat in the heart of Port Douglas!! Thank you

We stayed here for 6 days in January. We had a first floor apartment overlooking the pool. The pool is so lovely, surrounded by plants and trees with birds in the trees, so relaxing, lovely and warm, perfect. The apartment we had was in the best position I think, the apartments are quite basic but comfortable if a little tired but we didn't mind too much as so much to see in this part of Australia we didn't spend much time in it anyway. The owners were friendly and helpful and gave us some good tips on which trips to do - although that said I would avoid the Quicksilver tour as we felt it was too big and they seemed to be out to make as much money as possible from the tourists. Don't do the ocean walk it's a total waste of money. Anyway back to the apartment and Port Douglas - we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Room Tip: First floor apartment overlooking the pool

The Port Douglas Resort was perfect for our needs and very good value, I think. Quiet, few people staying in Port Douglas at all it seemed, in January, (wet season, but we were lucky, nothing but sunshine for 5 of the 8 days) and few guests at Port Douglas Resort, so we usually had pool area to ourselves. Pool itself is about 15-17 metres in length I guess, pool area is spacious: lounges, chairs, shade from trees and BBQs, including cooking oils and utensils. Very handy, as most of the restaurants we dined at were charging around $30 for main courses and no BYOs (as we are used to in Melbourne!). Location is one block from main shopping strip, Macrossan Street, and a 5-7 minute walk to marina. Our ground floor room overlooked pool, was clean and adequate space for two. It was cleaned & fresh towels, mid week. Owners are helpful and obliging when booking tours.

This was our first stop on our driving holiday from Port Douglas to Brisbane and it was lovely. Perfect quiet location, beautiful gardens, lovely pool, very helpful and obliging owners who went out of their way to be helpful and informative. Would thoroughly recommend.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the pool and gardens which was great.

Budget room on expensive side. Too small it's just a hotel room with the smallest useless kitchen. The old type air conditioning was so noisy. The floor and behind furniture was dirty and dusty. We stayed 7 LONG nights no room service or cleaning and no clean towels. If you want clean sheets or towels you have to pay more. No washing machine in room you have to pay $4 per wash in laundry room. Balcony too small with hot air coming out of old air conditioning too hot to sit outside. No other kitchen table in room to eat at. Huge crack in glass hot plate obviously old damage not repaired. Totally useless freezer section in bar fridge. We wanted to freeze water drinks for our excursions.
One a positive note great location, great pool and BBQ area, friendly service.

We just spent a week at Port Douglas Retreat and found it a great place to stay for the price and location. Yes, we had to keep our room clean and it was a bit surprising not to get fresh towels at least once during a week stay but overall, we were very happy there. We especially appreciated the opportunity to cook some of our meals (reducing food costs!) and eating these meals on our balcony shielded with lovely palm trees and other tropical plants. Joyce and David, the managers, proved to be a great resource of information and kindness!

Lovely small complex, friendly, efficient owners, well equipped apartment, nice pool area, BBQ facilities. OK so you don't get your room tidied every day but who needs that anyway?
It's easily walkable to the marina, market, shops and restaurants. Everything is clean. Laundry room clean and cheap. The beds are comfy, TV has all the channels, radio provided..... I could go on.
You have everything you need to make yourself a fantastic holiday location all at a very good price.
We are fussy travellers and the only fault we can find is that the internet connection is unreliable and pricey, everything else is spot on. We are spending Christmas & New Year here and are very pleased with PD as a resort and this apartment in particular.
