I've dived around the world but have just had my first dives on the Great Barrier Reef, with Jay. If you're staying in Port Douglas Jay provides a door to door service, with pick ups and drop offs. We started with breakfast at the Marina (Lure is a great cafe/bar) and the onto one of the larger faster boats that gets to the outer reef and back in a day. The service and people on Calypso were great.
To the diving, and photos - when you hire Jay to take you diving you don't just get a first class diver who really knows the sites you're diving on, you also get a first class photographer who will create some of the best photographic memories you'll ever have. I dived with Jay for two days (6 dives) and he found interesting coral and fish life on every dive. He knew exactly where to find true clown fish for example. You really don't need to do much work either if you don't want to - Jay makes sure the gear is all prepared for you for every dive, and in-between times he was good company, and very knowledgeable about the reef and it's rich aquatic life.
I haven't dived with other Port Douglas guides, but having been with Jay I will certainly search him out next time I'm back. A great experience and a well earned 10/10 as well as 5 stars.

We contacted Jay and from the first emails through to our actual dive day, as the other reviews say he takes care of everything and this was certainly the case for us too! After a couple of emails Jay suggested that we speak in person and at this point it was pretty obvious that this his diving business is a passion for him and not a job!
Our friends that had visited Port Douglas before and told us that most of the restaurant staff and boat crews were backpackers just passing through town. So we really wanted to go out to the reef with a person who had more of an interest in us as people rather than just after a fee for the day and putting us with a backpacker guide. When you book with Abc There is only Jay. He doesn't set up for you to dive with some one else so you get true one on one service with the man himself.

Prior to arriving in Port Douglas Jay suggested we have a meeting on at least one day before our dive day, this is something we have not done before and I must admit I thought why do we need to do this? In retrospect this was a great thing to do, it made us both feel at ease and know that the equipment we were going to be using fitted us correctly and even having choice of colour! Not to mention the important planning of our day and our current dive experience level. Jay went to great lengths to make sure we were not diving under or over our experience level and we felt very comfortable with Jays advice and suggestions. The final choices were always our decisions. We ended up with a joint plan that accommodated both of us and at the same time. We got the most from our air tanks and our dive times. Jay always monitored our dive depths and air usage constantly.

On our dive day Jay collected us personally from our accommodation early, so we didn't have to rush around, then we all had a casual breakfast before boarding the boat, all so civilised.

Once aboard the boat Jay gave us a orientation of the boat and it was lovely having all the dive gear ready for us prior to all dives and organised space to put our masks & fins, even our own camera rinse facilities for what proved to be our token Go Pro cameras, after the first dive and we saw Jay in action with a camera in his hands we just left that side of things to Jay. Drinks ready for us on our return from the dives was also a nice touch leaving us just to basically just chill between dives. But still a little time to discuss the dives and also Jay made some great comments that helped us on our subsequent dives.

The dives themselves were fantastic. Jay obviously knew the dive sites and although there were around 20 other divers aboard, we only ever saw them on entry and exit from the boat. Many large and small species of fish were pointed out tiny Nudibranchs to a Whaler Shark. Hanging with the Barracuda was just so tranquil just observing from a couple of metres away. Small shrimps things hidden in caves, a big school of Bump-head parrot fish swam through, rays. Parts of the dives were like swimming in our own private aquarium.

As for the photography side of things this is something we had not even considered before seeing Jays work. But after the first dive seeing a glimpse of the photos we were hooked. Jay has a knack of setting up the photo shots and getting video footage without really imposing on the dive he just seems to be there at the right moment. Catching us at a good angle and bringing a totally new aspect to our dives, one we had not experienced before. What better way is there than to record this once in a lifetime opportunity in a personal way and Jay certainly does that for you.

How much fun was the return trip looking at some of the videos on the ipad and discussing some of the fish that we had seen. Jay also showed us some editing techniques for both pictures and video. How up to date was Jay with all the latest equipment and gadgets, love that ipad air Jay! Then the ability to let us have the digital data in a format that we find convenient for our travel. We saw Some of Jays work with his clients on Abc Scuba Facebook but really wanted to keep our photos private. Jay respected our wishes and our photos remained exactly that.

Jays service did not end when the boat got back from the reef. There was no big rush off the boat and goodbye. Jay took some pictures of us in the Marina area. We sat and had a relaxing beer and chatted about our day. Jay then showed us around town before heading back to our accommodation, pointing out some good restaurants and other things worth a look at. We then made arrangements to meet the next day for a coffee. Where he presented some of the pictures he had managed to edit overnight. In the subsequent weeks after the dive Jay kept in contact and even made a movie for us, this was a total surprise and after attempting some editing of video footage myself I do know how time consuming that is. It would of taken Jay hours to do what he did for us.

Jay is tremendous value for money, when we first got some prices to go diving at quick glance Jay looked like the more expensive but when you see what he actually does, his level of involvement and commitment he must be the cheapest! An all round superb service from Jay that definitely goes well above and beyond just the diving and a day on the reef. I cannot recommend Jay highly enough and now see why Jay deserves the title "The Port Douglas Dive Guide" thank you Jay for everything. We will be spreading the word to all our diver friends.

My wife and I were initially supposed to do a 3-Day dive as part of a liveaboard until she burst her eardrum and we had to make alternate arrangements. We read online reviews about Jay Wink and he did not disappoint.

First, Jay was very flexible and helpful. We contacted him last minute and he re-arranged his schedule to accommodate us for a day trip. His organization makes for a truly enjoyable, stress free experience. Jay organized the boat (including ensuring that we got the best seats). He organized all the gear, leaving us to focus on the stunning reef. Jay also met with us in advance to understand what type of things we wanted to see and what type of pictures we were interested in. This personal attention was well worth the price, which incidentally is very competitive with the guides provided by the boats for much larger groups.

The diving and snorkeling itself were nothing short of extraordinary. I thought it would be challenging having to tend to one diver and one snorkeler, but Jay did it flawlessly, paying attention to both of us and getting some sensational pictures of us together and separately. His experience with both diving and photography were extremely helpful (especially with my lack of diving experience). He was very patient and reassuring and able to give good direction and tips.

We love trying to get great pictures on our trips and this is what really attracted us to Jay’s company. He knows all the great spots and his attention to detail and determination to get great shots was the greatest payoff. He found some lion fish, clownfish, and even a reef shark, which I would have never seen on my own or in a larger group.

You can tell that Jay really enjoys showing others the great barrier reef. In addition to all his expertise, he has a great attitude and is just a fun guy. The only regret we had on the trip was that we did not use him for more than one day! Thanks for such a memorable experience, Jay!

A brilliant weeks diving in Port Douglas hosted & organised by ABC Scuba diving. Accommodation was top notch and finished to a superb standard. Jay's years of experience accrued diving in the Port Douglas area shone through when we arrived at each and every dive site. With 3 dives per day, which is "busy", it still felt safe and relaxed due to the information and assistance provided by Jay. Once in the water he knew where to look for fish and marine life of interest. Jay has many many years of scuba diving experience, and not just in the Port Douglas area either. So if you want to talk about other possible destinations, over a "post dive beer" maybe, I'm sure he will give invaluable advice and insight. Also, his knowledge of the town of port Douglas helped us seek out the right venue for each night depending on our mood.
We would not hesitate to return in the future and wholly recommend ABC Scuba diving.
