We had a few operators that we were considering, but we finally decided upon Calypso because it went to the outer reef, and it was one of the slightly less expensive options. The boat we went out on was a triple-decker catamaran that probably had about 50 snorkellers and divers on board (I think they have a smaller boat purely for snorkelling as well) ... we were originally thinking of going with a smaller boat and less people, but it was fine - it wasn't claustrophobic, and we weren't stuck behind people. We might have been lucky though in that we got a boat that wasn't jam-packed as it was rough seas on the day we went, and the biggish boat meant it handled the rough conditions better. The gear provided was good and they give everyone a wet/stinger suit, but the snorkel left a bad taste in our mouths for a long time until we gave it a good rinse in the ocean - I think it was the cleaning agent they used, so at least it was clean. The reef of course was stunning, and we were taken to 3 different spots. The food was good, and while they catered for my wife who is gluten-free, she was also pregnant at the time and it meant she couldn't eat a lot of the deli-style cold meats. The staff were friendly and knew what they were doing, and it was reassuring to know there were a few of them repeated counting how many people were on board to make sure nobody was left behind. One minor disappointment was that one of the crew usually take underwater photos but didn't on the day we were there for an unexplained reason so we have no happy snaps of ourselves in the water. The hire camera did look great but it was out of our budget at $75 for the day. Definitely recommended, but if/when we go back to the reef, we would look at paying a bit more for a smaller boat if we had the budget.

My husband and I could not have asked for more, from friendly, professional and informative staff to a comfortable ride out to the reef and a great lunch. Transfers from our hotel were organised and extremely convenient as well as stinger suits being provided for the snorkelling. We snorkelled at 3 different sites and saw a reef shark (didn't eat anyone or even bother us at all!), a turtle- amazing! and Nemo family- so cute! as well as some beautiful coral gardens and colourful/interesting fish. The whole experience was fantastic and we would go back out with Calypso in a flash.

We were picked up from our hotel and taken to the boat where we were provided with snorkelling gear and anti stinger suit. The supervisors were very helpful in getting my novice very nervous wife to snorkel and enjoy the magic colours of the reef and its fish. The refreshmenrs were really good. We were able to snorkel at 3 different places on the reef. If there was any criticism it was that divers were not more separated from snorkellers. It was a fantastic day out.

Thanks to the crew of Calypso, my Son and I had a fantastic day out on the Great Barrier Reef. The day started out with a friendly greeting on Board the boat and a chat about what the day would bring. Snorkelers and divers were given an expert advise and safety chat prior to entering the water. We visited three reef sites and all were spectacular with different species of marine life and coral to be viewed. Among the great staff on Calypso was a Marine Biologist who with all of his knowledge gave us all some very interesting commentary about the reef and it's abundant life. We thank the Calypso Crew very much for a truly memorable day and would have no hesitation recommending this great day out.
