We had a few operators that we were considering, but we finally decided upon Calypso because it went to the outer reef, and it was one of the slightly less expensive options. The boat we went out on was a triple-decker catamaran that probably had about 50 snorkellers and divers on board (I think they have a smaller boat purely for snorkelling as well) ... we were originally thinking of going with a smaller boat and less people, but it was fine - it wasn't claustrophobic, and we weren't stuck behind people. We might have been lucky though in that we got a boat that wasn't jam-packed as it was rough seas on the day we went, and the biggish boat meant it handled the rough conditions better. The gear provided was good and they give everyone a wet/stinger suit, but the snorkel left a bad taste in our mouths for a long time until we gave it a good rinse in the ocean - I think it was the cleaning agent they used, so at least it was clean. The reef of course was stunning, and we were taken to 3 different spots. The food was good, and while they catered for my wife who is gluten-free, she was also pregnant at the time and it meant she couldn't eat a lot of the deli-style cold meats. The staff were friendly and knew what they were doing, and it was reassuring to know there were a few of them repeated counting how many people were on board to make sure nobody was left behind. One minor disappointment was that one of the crew usually take underwater photos but didn't on the day we were there for an unexplained reason so we have no happy snaps of ourselves in the water. The hire camera did look great but it was out of our budget at $75 for the day. Definitely recommended, but if/when we go back to the reef, we would look at paying a bit more for a smaller boat if we had the budget.
