Enjoyed immensely the five days we had at By the Sea. Accommodation good, showers nice and hot ,pool excellent,, all staff very obliging - they couldnot do enough for you. The location is superb, close to the beach,in the main street of Port Douglas, close to the shops and fabulous restaurants. Looking forward to returning and would recommend it to all of my friends and others.

We have had just over a week in all at By the Sea, and it was lovely, it was a return visit for us(we had stayed there last year for nine nights. This time we had four nights, went over to the Tablelands for a couple of nights tnen back to By the Sea, the staff were very accomodating and in fact our first four nights we were upgraded to a Sea View Superior, lovely!!! The second unit we had was a sea and pool view - slighlty smaller, but great for two of us. The staff are very obliging, and are willing to help with anything, we will certainly recommend this resort to others

Room Tip: The higher floors are great for the views

Just like the pix! Roomy studio had great balcony/verandah. Extras much appreciated - from generous supply of kitchenware to all the items up for borrowing at no extra charge. Internet (free) down one day and Wendy rushed up to try and remedy and offered us an i-pad.

This place operates on generosity and trust which is a huge plus in making guests feel welcome and positive.
Thanks for a great stay.

They say first impressions are so important. We arrived from Melbourne on 16 June 2012 at around 7.30 pm having been advised that a letter with directions to our room would be waiting for us (as no one would be on reception at that time) explaining where our room was located and that the door would be left open for us with the room keys inside and the lights on. The promised letter was indeed waiting for us pinned to a notice board in front of the reception area. So far, so good. The letter described where our room was - up the stairs at the back, turn left along the corridor and right at the RED swing doors and it was No 23. Finally we managed to locate No. 23 - behind a pair of WHITE swing doors. However, the name on the door was Rainforest Elegance or similar although according to the confirmation email I had received when I booked the apartment it should actually have been called Tropical Elegance. Confusing? Just a little? And guess what? The door was very firmly locked. I assumed we must have been given the wrong room number and so we wandered dismally through the building searching for the elusive red swing doors leading to an inviting OPEN door to our Tropical Elegance two-storey haven. Eventually my son located an emergency phone number on the front notice board which we rang and finally someone turned up to unlock our apartment - behind the WHITE swing doors etc. I was by this time rather cranky, as could be expected. We got an apology - sorry, new cleaning lady, how about a bottle of champagne? The "champagne" turned out to be a bottle of Yellow. Hating to be pedantic - that is NOT champagne.
The fridge didn't work and actually had to be replaced. There was no dishwasher in the kitchen - I do not expect to have to do the washing up while on holiday. The internet would work only sporadically. The second bedroom did not have a proper wardrobe and the beds were pushed together and made up as a double bed even though they were supposed to be made up as two single beds. The sofa bed in the living room was very uncomfortable. There was constant noise from the apartment above us - it sounded like a small child running up and down over and over, interspersed with trying to break down a door or blast through a wall - perhaps its parents had locked it in for the day and it was trying to break out? This continued during the whole week we were there and was joined by construction noises later in the week coming from beneath our apartment.
On the plus side we did get the use of beach towels, there were bikes we could borrow and general beach type stuff. It was close to the beach and the main shopping/restaurant area which was great and the apartment we stayed in was very clean. The whole vibe of the place though seemed rather dated although I gather that it has only recently been refurbished? I have to say also that the staff were quick to rectify the problems we had though nothing could really compensate for that negative first impression we received on arrival compounded by the further problems we encountered. Very overpriced for the experience we had and the standard of accommodation and I'm afraid I would not stay there again. Absolutely loved Port Douglas though and will certainly return in the future - just not to By The Sea.

, Manager at By The Sea Port Douglas, responded to this review, July 1, 2012
This guest certainly did not have a good first 10 minutes upon arrival at our resort when she found that her room was locked and not behind the red doors as stated in her welcome letter. Most frustrating after a long day of travelling, and not a good first impression at all. And then the fridge in her room malfunctioning four days into her stay is not in the manual of “how to keep your guests happy” either.

Of course we are not in the habit of locking customers out of their room, and our appliances (all less than two years old) are generally well behaved. It was a rare treble whammy of human error caused by a new cleaner, a painter getting ahead of schedule, and a customer putting the fridge on the highest possible temperature causing the fridge to go in to a defrost cycle and hence not work. We had the guest in her room within 10 minutes of arrival and the fridge was replaced with no wastage within 30 minutes, so we did our best to rectify the problems quickly as possible. However none of this detracts from the fact the customer was inconvenienced and we felt really awful about this.

We tried everything we could to make up for the inconvenience upon arrival with profuse apologies, a bottle of what we call Champagne in these parts, and generally bending over backwards in any way we could to be of assistance to this guest. Most customers, after the initial annoyance, do get over a mistake if rectified quickly, but not everyone is the same and when this customer told us in no uncertain terms before even stepping in her room that there was nothing we would could do to stop her from giving us a negative review, because first impressions were everything and nothing could change them, we were in no doubt that she meant it. We thought it a little extreme, but again fair enough.

The rest of the customer’s promised negative review is far from fair and we would therefore be grateful if you would please take on board the following:

If the thought of being given a free bottle of Yellow glen (which in these parts we refer to as champagne) is offensive, or if you want to stay in a brand new building then ours is not the right type of resort for you.

Details of everything provided by our resort and all items in each room type (including a full list of everything in the kitchen) are provided on our web site and on the booking confirmation you receive. Please take the time to read these, and if an item is not listed which you deem essential, please find a resort that does provide what you want as it is very important for you to be happy on your holiday.

If you have a problem with noise whatsoever in this resort, please immediately report it to management, particularly if you think it is a small child abandoned all day and is trying to break out of the room it is locked in to. We rarely get complaints about noise but when we do, we act swiftly to identify the source and fix the problem, which we would have done if this customer had bothered to mention there was a problem.

Our internet is free and is generally very reliable and fast for the tropics, (and if it were not this would be a frequent complaint on trip advisor). And for this customer to say it was sporadic throughout her seven day stay is surprising in the extreme.

Equally perplexing is this guest’s comment about construction noises. The reason we are perplexed is that there was no construction going on during this guest’s stay except for the common grounds being painted, which is hardly noisy. Please be assured there is no construction work going on at By The Sea Port Douglas.

In the last three years since we have taken on ownership of this resort we have gutted every room and replaced old kitchens with new, complete with new utensils, stove top, and microwave oven, platters, coffee plungers and the like. The old, sunken double beds we inherited from the previous owners have been replaced with new commercial quality king beds. All old furnishings have been thrown out along with bedding and replaced. Where there were small TVs we now have large flat-screen HD TVs, new curtains have been made and installed, most rooms painted and so the list goes on. So renovations are not questionable, they are a fact.

Some of the rooms have sofa beds which of course can never be quite as comfortable as sleeping on a brand new bed. That is why we spent $3000 on each sofa bed to ensure they were custom made, of commercial value and most importantly of all have inner spring mattresses in them. This does not make them as comfortable as a king bed, but it makes them a lot more comfortable than the traditional sofa bed.

We hope this response provides useful information on which to make an informed choice about whether By the Sea Port Douglas is the right resort for you. Please look at our web site, look at the photographs, look at the facilities, look at the room layouts and what is provided. All that is on our web site is a true reflection of what we are and what we provide, which is not a plush five star resort, but a quiet, relaxing quality beachside four star resort providing comfortable accommodation and good services. Please also check out other guest reviews.

We thank you for your time and attention.

With kind regards from all The Girls at By the Sea Port Douglas

We stayed 6 nights in this accomodation. The apartments are situated right across the beach access. They are very clean and well maintained. All details which you can find on their homepage are correct, e. g. the equipment which is available for the beach. The ladies´crew of the management is very friendly, helpful and competent. The apartments with a balcony looking on to Macrossan Street offer wonderful aspects of street life. We can highly recommend By the Sea for your holidays.

There were fourteen of us in our party and we all had a fantastic time here. The staff were friendly and helpful. They had thought of everything that we could possibly need, even down to the cool boxes, parasols and chairs for the beach. Their website is a true reflection of what to expect. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: All the rooms that our party had were good

Even though it's located in Macrossan Street, and within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants and night-spots as well as the beac, it's really quiet and relaxed. We stayed in one of the small rooms, (called"Cosies"), but we didn't have any problems fitting in. The bed was very comfortable and we even had our own little private tropical garden to enjoy with a quiet drink. The staff were really helpful, and the free extras like bikes, eskies, picnic needs etc. were an added bonus and just added to the great value for money. My only gripe was the parking, which is really tight and I don't know how you'd get on with a larger vehicle. All-in-all, though, we'll be back if we can.
