Good location right in the centre of Port Douglas near to shops, restaurants etc. This is not a hotel as such as there is no restaurant or bar it is purely accommodation only. Having said that the 'rooms' (mini-apartments really) have basic facilities for self-catering but we only had breakfast in the room and ate out in the evenings. The pool is clean but not too big and there are not many sunbeds. The down side is that there is a flight of very steep steps at the entrance to the hotel and I was surprised to find no ramp or alternative way to get luggage into hotel - you need strong arms!! No porter available either.

Our room was problematic in so far as the electrics seemed to be wired incorrectly. One light in the bedroom didn't work and the other came on for a split second when you pressed the light switch. The kitchen lights came on and went off at will when the switch was on. Reported it but maintenance men could not fix it - only there for five days and it wasn't fixed by the time we left.

On the whole a convenient, clean place to stay but I am sure there is better for the money.

Lets hit the positives first. Port Douglas is the place to stay - wine bars, restaurants, pubs, access to the outer great barrier reef - fantastic.

The Outrigger Heritage is predominantly apartments and caters for families. We believed it was a 4*+ hotel from the brochure description but in reality we found it to be 3* at best. We base this on six nights stay in the smallest and strangest design room we had ever seen. It was small (a double bed all but completely filled it!), the carpet was dirty and there were ill fitting folding doors to the extensive and well equipped bathroom. At the other side of the bathroom was a full wall sized patio door onto a small balcony. Fortunately we were not overlooked as a petrol station was opposite us as they may have been treated to sights they didn't expect or deserve (to be fair there was a blind that covered the whole window but that made the whole place dark and dismal). The room looked like it and next door had once been an apartment that had been split to make two inferior rooms.

The hotel staff were always pleasant and polite albeit we had conflicting advice on certain aspects of our stay from different members of staff. There was a pool but no poolside bar. The reception closed at 8pm for the night leaving no internal security staff and no access to the email facility. There is no lounge, bar or restaurant within the hotel (albeit the twon is awash with them).

We can't speak about the apartments because we couldn't upgrade to one as the place was full.

Would I stay there again - no. Would I look at the outrigger chain again - yes - the hotel in Palm Cove some 10 to 15 miles away lokked absolutely fantastic - and it was a comparable price.

We stayed here for two nights in late December and, overall, were satisfied with the hotel at an above-average rating. The location of the hotel is great - in the center of town, with a key-card entrance right onto Macrossan Street, where there are restaurants and tour operators...as well as a Coles grocery store. I especially recommend the location of this hotel if, like us, you don't have a car to use during your trip.

We booked a regular hotel room, as opposed to one of the suites, and had a room with a queen-size bed (or was it a king size?) and a nice updated bathroom with a glass shower. The countertops were nice and there were pretty bowl-style sinks. Out on our private balcony there was a spa tub, a small table, and two chairs. (We didn't request a spa room, so we weren't sure if this was an upgrade or if these are standard in the hotel rooms.) There was a bar area with a sink in the room as well as a small fridge and some basic plates / cups / glasses / utensils.

We didn't have a chance to use the pool area during our stay, but it was lovely and our room overlooked it - nice sun beds and a resort-style pool with hot tub. We did use the Internet Portal in the lobby area which was a coin-operated system and very convenient.

Be forewarned their front desk closes early...I think at 8pm. We arrived for our check-in later at night and had to press a button on the front porch to call a security guard to come from another property to let us into our room. This was not too much of an inconvenience, as he arrived within about 5 minutes and was very helpful in getting us situated.

A definite drawback is that there were some inconvenient steps. There was a set of steps (maybe 10 or 15?) in front of the lobby that we had to haul our luggage up and down and, once we loaded up our luggage cart and headed up the elevator, we encountered another smaller set of steps that we had to navigate to get to our room. The only other complaint we had is that, after we opened some cookies by the bar, we found a bunch of little sugar ants in our room. They weren't the biting kind, just irritating.

On the whole, we liked the hotel enough that I'm pretty sure we would stay there again. The location alone would make it hard to pass up, especially if we could find another good deal on the Internet.

Booked this hotel using the Outriggers own website and had no problems. Stayed for 7 nights.

We had a 1 bedroom suite with private hot tub and bbq on the balcony that overlooked Mossman street. The suite was fantastic, really nice bathroom with a great shower. Living room area with couch, tv and dvd player and small kitchen with sink, hob, fridge freezer and toaster.

We loved having the bbq, what could be more Australian than throwing a few shrimps on the barbie and watching the sun set!

The staff where great and helped us book the trips we went on. The hotel probably has the best location in Port Douglas, right on the main street and 10 mins walk from the Marina and beach.

The hotel pool is really nice.

The only problems with the hotel are:
1. The rooms are not ready til 2pm which was not very good for us as we were very tired from our flight and had to wait 4 hours for the room.
2. Lots of stairs to carry the suitcases up.
3. Lack of shade round the pool. We felt the pool area needed more sun shades.

I would definetly reccomend this hotel to any one else.

We stayed at the hotel for one night before moving to two other spots for our 8 night stay in Port Douglas. Comparatively, this hotel was almost $100/night cheaper than the other two places we stayed so I can't directly compare the other two spots (Sheraton Mirage and the Mai Tai Resort) but here is a quick summary of the good and bad:

The bad-
1) If you have a lot of bags - hope they aren't too heavy. There are steep stairs at the entry, and then even more stairs on each floor to get to your unit (there is an elevator but there were still five stairs to get into the suite).

2) The room, while new, was very beat up. The carpet was disgusting. We didn't even want to take our shoes off. I don't know if they have ever cleaned the carpets. The walls were banged up and covered in dirt. Even though the bathroom was clean and modern we couldn't help but feel like things were dirty just because of the walls and the floor.

3) The bed was just a mattress on a frame and was ok. It was not uncomfortable, it just wasn't especially good.

4) We arrived late and the desk was shutting down for the night. The hotel is not staffed 24 hours. I think it shut down at 9pm and reopened at 7am. Not a big deal unless you are late arriving like we were.

The good-
1) Location - it backs onto Macrossan street where EVERYTHING is. It's two blocks from the water.

2) It has a lovely pool, and our room had a nice deck overlooking the pool.

3) There was a jacuzzi tub on our deck which we didn't use but it looked nice.

4) The staff at the front desk were very helpful.

Conclusion:
If you want good value in the heart of the activity this is a great spot. If you like a bit of luxury or you are a bit of a clean freak then this is probably not your spot.

You will need some nice big muscles if you intent to stay at this resort. When you arrive at the resort, you are greeted by approximately 30 very steep steps that you must navigate to get to the reception. There are NO signs to indicate any other way into the reception expect up the stairs and NO staff around to assist. Everyone i came across was shocked and annoyed about this - great first impression Outrigger!!
Throughout the resort the are many many more steps. This was no worries for me - but older visitors should note this!
Another major issue this resort has - if you have kids and stay in a two bedroom - is that the kids room opens onto the spa balcony! and the Adult room is near the kitchen!? When i asked if we could swap our kids away from the spa and into the room away from the spa we were told this was not possible due to single beds only being in the spa room.. When i asked if i could go to another room where the config is different - i was told by the manager that all the configurations in 2 bedrooms are the same. (Lets hope the manager wasnt lying to me as its on the this web site now!! ) BEWARE - this is a danger for kids safety - if your kids are like mine they are very mischvious!.
Pool was quite cool but with a great setting and well looked after. Rooms were OK. On arrival I found a few light bulbs out, the switches on the ceiling fans missing, and the room only set up for 4 people when i had paid for 5. I had to request the 5th towel, and extra dinner settings - it was only equipped for 4 people staying (ie 4 bowls, 4 plates, 4 glasses) Like a previous person on this website - clock radio was set for 5am!!
Locations of this resort is sensational! Close to everything - no need for a car.
Staff are OK but wont go out of their way for you. This is yet another resort where the old excuse comes up time and time again - "The rooms are individually owned"
NO DISHWASHER - one hotplate.
The rooms are nothing fancy and probably about 3 years off renovations. You are paying 300 -350 a night for location! - not luxury so dont expect luxury rooms.
Look i wont say this resort was terrible because it was not. If you can get past the stairs and the safety issue for kids -so you are a couple - it is in a great spot and nice and quiet.
