“Had a ball at the Portsea”
Reviewed August 23, 2007

Our group of 8 recently stayed at the Mantra Portsea and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Having previously read the reports written by others I was a bit apprehensive too, however we didn't really experience any problems. The Pool area was beautiful, swim up bar a hazard to the wallet, but very handy. The towel charge was a bit disappointing, but not really a major problem. The 2 things that were a bit off putting were the lack of cleanliness in the rooms and balconys and the fact that we had requested 2 rooms close to each other when we booked several months ago, but ended up with 2 rooms miles away from each other. Breakfast was great, especially 2 free ones per day. This said, we would definately recommend the Portsea and would love to return someday.

After seeing some of the reviews prior to our stay I was wondering whether we had made a good choice. I can categorically say that the 10 nights my wife and 3 boys had at the Portsea were fantastic. There was none of the musty smell that some reviewers mentioned, the 2 bed apartment was a good size, both bedrooms had ensuite facilities. The location was great for the beach and only a 10min walk from the town. They do charge for extra towels, but with a bit of ingeniuty you can get round this. The pool area and pool bar were excellent and the staff friendly. Everybody we spoke to were happy with the Portsea and I would recommend the resort.

We stayed here during a month long tour of Australia and can safely say that the rooms here were the most dissapointing we had stayed in. The Hotel is in a good location for the beach, and a reasonable walking distance from the resort centre of Port Douglas. However the rooms were small and smelt damp, which I suspect came from the air conditioning units! Breakfast was ok and the other facilities, ie pool, laundry and car parking were good. We would love to visit Port Douglas again, but I don't think we'll stay here again. Sorry.

Wonderful pool area and great facilities but very over-rated rooms.
The hotel is rated as about a 4 - 5 star hotel and it is certainly not of that standard. The rooms are fitted with budget broken or dirty fittings and furniture. We stayed for 7 days and were allowed one towel each. If we wanted another towel we were expected to pay $2.00 for. There was no dishwashing liquid, no dishcloth and we were given a single roll of toilet paper. The apartment was not serviced in the time we stayed there, despite there being no discount for an extended stay. The room was billed as a luxury apartment with full kitchen facilities. The kitchen consisted of a half metre bench, a hotplate, a very old and burnt frying pan and the sum total of about three broken utensils. Nothing luxurious about the rooms. They were very much three star quality. Plastic bath, plastic fittings and cheap old unattractive cane furniture, the cushions for which hadn't been washed since they were purchased by the look of them. A 15 year old TV with no DVD player or stereo or anything you'd reasonably expect from a "luxury" hotel..
Whilst staying there I heard at least 4 people complaining to the reasonably disinterested staff about their rooms.
On the plus side there about 5 different swimming pools and they are just wonderful. Our three year old loved swimming all day every day. The pools were great as there were deep parts and paddling areas for the little kids, including a waterfall and a little slide and rocks to play on. Loved the pool, the rest I'd suggest is very over-rated. Port Douglas is a gorgeous holiday spot and we had a marvellous holiday.

We stayed the 10th of July ’07 to the 17th as part of the Australian leg of our Honeymoon.
The bad:
Not many sun loungers around the pool
Room had a strange odour
Ants in the room
Room only serviced once a week
20 minute walk to the lively part of the town
The good:
Jacuzzi bath
DVD player & LCD TV with a good choice of stations
Very close to the beach
Regular shuttle bus in and out of town ($2 each way)
Walk into town quite pleasant in the evenings
I wouldn’t stay again. I could see past all the negatives save the room only being serviced once a week. Having said that we did enjoy our stay in Port Douglas and the Break Free Port Sea is by no means a disaster. I do believe we had one of the better rooms. Oh & breakfast is very basic.

My family of five stayed at the Portsea Resort in April 07. We were very happy with the resort. The pool, waterslide, poolside bar and breakfasts were great. The rooms were clean enough, a slight musty smell occasionally, which in the wet season in FNQ is understandable. We weren't there long enough for the towels to be an issue but very glad we took plenty of beach towels for poolside. Would return to the Portsea again.

We just returned from 1 week at the Portsea. We are a family of 4 with 2 children ages 10 and 7. We had a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment on the ground floor, right next to the main pool.

Pro's:
An absolutely fabulous pool area with a small water slide, waterfalls, a crocodile (don't worry - he wasn't real), a swim-up pool bar, tikki torches, a bridge over the middle of it all, etc.

The food at the pool bar was really good.

A lovely open-air lobby with a really tropical feel.

Pleasant, helpful staff.

A gym (my husband used it several times and said it was more than adequate with good quality equiptment).

Only a 2-3 minute walk to the beach.

Tennis court.

2 additional, quieter pools for people who maybe wanted a more quiet atmosphere than that provided by the main pool.

A bottle shop across the street.

A real family atmosphere, which was great for us - but maybe wouldn't be so great for honeymooners or people looking for quiet, not fond of children, etc.

Con's:
For stays of 7 days or less they do not give you fresh towels. I felt
this was really unreasonable - leaving you with the option of either washing the towels yourself (this would have cost $7 to wash, dry and
purchase the detergeant for 1 load), paying $2 for each clean towel, or using the same towels for an entire week.

The latest you can order food at the pool bar is 7:15 pm. I think they need to extend this to at least 8pm (or preferably 9). Especially since there are no other dining options at the resort itself (other than having a pizza delivered).

No dishwasher or oven (just a microwave, hotplate, fridge and toaster).

Expensive alcohol prices at the pool bar.

A bit of both:
The location was pretty good - about a 10 minute walk to the shops and restaurants, but could be a problem if it is really hot or raining or if a person has mobility problems. I would not want to be any further from the heart of things unless we had a rental car.

I felt that our apartment was mostly nice and clean (clean floors, bathrooms, kitchen, etc) but there were a couple of things they missed which were very obvious to me - like visible mold on the ceiling fans and a really dirty moldy exhaust fan in one of our bathrooms.

The apartments are not serviced during your stay (unless you are there 8 or more nights). We didn't mind the apartments not being serviced, but did mind not getting fresh towels, bathmats, etc.

Overall:
Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Portsea and I would recommend it, but would make sure that people were aware of the towel situation and the other small cons. I feel like this resort has huge potential (great pool and facilities) but that they need to polish things up a bit (providing fresh towels, later food availability at the pool bar, attention to the mold on the ceiling fans and exhaust fan). The pool area was a big deal maker for us. I would also definitely want to have a room around the main pool as we did this time. All rooms have balconies or patios.
