We stayed for a short three day break in late August and loved it. We were travelling with our two "water babies", kids who would prefer to stay in the pool 24/7 ! The pool was the best feature for us, because it meant that the whole family could enjoy the variety of pools and the varying depths. There are two spas at each end of the main pool, the pools themselves go from shallow to deeper near the pool bar. The temerature was perfect. The rooms were set up with the rightcombination of self contained familities and look to have been recently refurbished. The location is a short walk from the main town centre of Port Douglas and also a stroll to the beach.

After reading some of the reviews I was a bit hesitant about staying here but we loved the Mantra Portsea. Stayed here for a week as part of a three week trip to Far North Queensland and it was our favourite place we stayed in, much nicer than the 5 star hotel where we stayed in Cairns. The grounds were well cared for with beautiful tropical flowers and palms. The lap pool was really good as was the saline pool at the back of the resort, it was lovely to walk around the resort and discover extra pools and sitting areas! The lagoon pool is beautiful and the pool bar is lovely . During our week stay we found it to be open for all the hours it was supposed to be and did indeed serve children (not sure why my experience of this differed so greatly from previous reviewer but I know I did not imagine the children with ice creams and soft drinks sitting at the bar!).
Our one bed apartment was great with a nice casual tropical feel and was very clean. As is clearly advertised the resort is not five star and is non-serviced but the room is easy clean with lovely tiled floor and small kitchenette including dining table/breakfast bar as well as a spacious lounge area, separate carpeted bedroom area and nice bathroom with corner spa. We were on the third floor of the hotel and had to travel up two outside (under cover of verandahs) flights of stairs to get to our room but I preferred this to a closed in lift/lobby where you could be anywhere. Our room looked out over lagoon pool but we did not find it noisy at all. The balcony off our room was really nice, so large it had a table for four, room for a clothes airer and you could still walk around! We did have some ants come in to share our room, but only when we left the louvre windows open for a day. Personally I prefer this than knowing enough pesticide has been used around the resort to ensure no wildlife at all exists in it.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
I think your experience of the PortSea really does depend on what you are looking for in a hotel. If you want somehing that is casual, has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, where you can experience the feel of the tropics, easily walk to the beach, swim in nice pools, generally relax , unwind and explore the area then this is the place for you.

We stayed for four days. The accommodation was clean, its a bit of a maze to find your way around first up. I was glad we were on the first floor, as there are quite a few steps to the second floor and no lift. About 8 stairs from the garage to ground floor. There is a laundry in the garage area, no dryers, clothes airer in our room. Observed that there isn't much sun to the balconies at this time of year. No oven in the room, there are hotplates and a microwave, didn't worry us as we only ate brekkie and a couple of easy meals in. Its unserviced, this was o.k. for 4 days at this time of year. There were a few insects but when one visits the tropics this has to be expected, my tip don't leave sugar on the bench! Being a customer service fanatic, I found the staff were more process driven and quite artificial compared to the friendly staff we encountered in Cairns. That could be an area for improvement. But all in all having read some of the more negative reviews b4 we visited, I felt I should place a more positive comment for readers.

We looked at this resort on-line along with quite a few others and were impressed with the pics and blurbs found on a number of sites. Unfortunately photo's and reality are sometimes very different. For a supposedly 5* resort it was very dissapointing. Decor was very tired and quite dirty in many areas, staff always seemed distracted by other tasks rather than assisting guests, the 'lagoon pool' was a big dissapointment and the swin up bar opened for 30 mins in the afternoon and wouldn't serve kids.

We thought maybe we were being overly harsh in our assessment until we boarded a tour bus with about a dozen other guest and sat there listening to similar and harsher comments from the other guest. The general opinion was grossly over priced for what you get and unhelpful and rude staff.

nice establishment, close to beach. service at reception was very poor. firstly no tennis racquets, we were given 3 different reasons for this but by the 5th day no reason is of interest. How long does it take to buy 2 new tennis racquets? we partly chose this accommodation because of tennis court which we could not use(we stayed 5 nights)
Another incident at reception - newspapers were available for guests to read in the foyer area. upon enquiring whereabouts of papers, receptionist said she had them behind counter but needed to stamp them. - left guest waiting 15 minutes before doing so. Also there was no change available for laundry machines for several guests. it's a shame because the Portsea has a lot to offer. the girl at pool bar was very nice, good service.

I was a bit aprehensive about staying at the Portsea, the reviews I read after booking were not very complimentary but we found this a great place to stay. We got a great rate for a dual key 2 bedroom apartment - a hotel room and 1 bedroom studio with kitchenette & furnished balcony, admittedly only 2 of us so the space was fantastic and the room was very clean. We were on the second level looking out across to a residential street, with a saline lap pool below. It was peaceful and relatively private. There are rooms that look out to the "lagoon" pool, potentially these would be noisy and certainly not very private but fine if you like people watching. We found the "lagoon" pool a bit small for the number of rooms on the property but it was still very nice and the saline pool had very few people using it; there was also another lap pool on the property. It was a 10 to 15 minute walk into town and a 3 minute walk to the beach with maybe another 5 minutes to walk to where the surf livesaving flags were. The apartment was unserviced which was not a problem to us, in fact it was a positive, if required extra towels were $2 each. The rooms were well furnished. I would not advise booking a Hotel room on it's own as it would be too small for anything more than a one night stay- the hotel rooms do not have a balcony and the weather is much too nice not to be able to sit outside in the evening.
We stayed for 6 nights and would stay again.

My partner and I stayed at the Portsea last weekend an absolutely loved it! It's so close to the beach and easy walking distance to everything in Port Douglas. We loved the Pool Bar, the girls down there were fantastic. The room was great. Everyone was really helpfull and made our stay one to remember. We recommend this hotel to everyone looking for a relaxing place to stay.
