“If you don't have young children DON'T GO!!”
Reviewed September 23, 2012 via mobile

We are here at the moment not really by choice as every thing else was booked out. If you have young kids it's a great place. Great rooms, kitchenette & onsite laundry. Close to every thing. Dont expect quick service at the pool bar its dreadful. One other word of advise DO NOT get a package with breakfast what a rip off. Go buy your bread, tin fruit, cereal, cousaints, cappuccino, yoghurt because that's all you get. You get a toaster in your room do it yourself. Not like other places eg. Eggs, bacon etc. We normally stay at the Sheraton. Ok the rooms need a re-do but always clean breakfast great and at least you can get away from really noisy, squealing kids. I have a 16yr and he loves it there manly for the pool. Wow 5 acres. Believe it or not it's package was cheaper than the portsea.

Hello Koolo

Thank you for writing a review on Mantra Portsea. We do get extremely busy with families during school holidays. Many people seeking peace and quiet request a higher floor for more privacy or choose to come outside of school holidays. Our continental buffet breakfasts are part of many packages as a free inclusion. Our lap pool and plunge pool are quieter areas of the resort and one often has these areas to oneself. The lagoon pool with its pool bar is a busier, fun place.

Thank you for your positive comments about the rooms. We do appreciate this.

Kind regards
Helen

My partner and I spent 5 nights here and had a very relaxing time. It was a handy location to 4 mile beach, just a block away. Only problem is there's not much shade on beach to spend a lot of time there. Water was beautiful. Probably a little far from town to walk with children or if you don't like the heat. Basic cooking facilities in rooms but we ate out at the plethora of eating places in town. Non- serviced rate was great. Fresh towels were available from reception any time, as well as pool towels. 3 pools on site, not heated. Main pool with small pool bar was great for kids. Plenty of lounges. Staff were friendly and helpful. Only complaint I had was the quality of the breakfast - very ordinary. We chose to eat out even though it was included.

Room Tip: Can have pool view but then there's no privacy on your balcony

Hello Chris K

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your stay at Mantra Portsea. We appreciate your comments. It is getting hotter now and the humidity has started to build a little. Our three beautiful pools at the resort have become very popular. The beach is best early or late in the day at this time of the year as the sun can be very strong. Those seeking a tan go all day!

Our continental buffet breakfast consists of five types of cereal, four types of bread (including gluten free), pastries (croissants, muffins and crumpets), ham, cheese, fruit salad, two varieties of yoghurt, two choices of juice, coffee and tea, including herbal options. There are lovely cafes in town should guests seek a full cooked breakfast.

We appreciate your honest opinion.
Kind regards

I just got back from staying at the Portsea for 4 nights and really enjoyed my stay there. The hotel was recommended to me by a friend. I was hesitant in staying there due to some of the negative reviews on here, however I'm glad i took the risk and gave it a go. The staff were always very friendly and helpful. They were very transparent regarding any extra costs (i.e. cleaning) & $200 credit deposit. I stayed in a one bedroom apartment which was a good size, clean & got good sun light. The breakfast had the basics (cereal, fruit, toast, croissants, juice, tea, coffee) which was ok for me. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the main street, but I didn't mind going for a leisurely stroll. I would definitely stay here again & recommend it to everyone

Booked the Mantra Portsea for 5 nights in hotel room.

I strongly recommend to anyone planning on staying at the Portsea to book at least a one bedroom suit NOT the hotel room. We stayed one night in the hotel room, which was tony, damp and smelt mouldy and musty. The room was actually below the level of the pool and it had flooded the balcony area. We asked to change rooms the next morning. They offered us either another hotel room or to upgrade for $40 to a one bedroom room. When we checked out the hotel room on the top floor, it had the same problem of being musty and damp. The one bedroom was much better.
Make sure when you check in they tell you about the area and the deals they have with other hotels/resturants. Also that they freeze $200 on your credit card until checkout. We were not told any of this when we checked in. As we were checking out we heard the staff telling one couple of all the discounts and deals they could get in port douglas by showing their mantra key. Wish we had known when we checked in!
Otherwise the breakfast was ok as was the pool and cocktails.
It is about a 10 minute walk into town and there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel which can also take you in.

Hello Naosydney

Thank you for providing feedback on your stay at Mantra Portsea. One bedroom apartments do provide so many more facilities and are worth booking from the outset for guests wanting extra space and cooking facilities. They provide a kitchenette, lounge/dining and balcony.

Hotel rooms are more suitable for short stays or for guests who want a cost effective holiday and who do not want to cook.

I'm so glad you enjoyed our pool, breakfast and cocktails.

Kind regards

We recently had 5 nights at mantra portsea and I can honestly say it was great! I think a lot of the reviews are unfair and that if you know/ understand what you are booking then you won't be disappointed.
We had a 2 bed dual key which was amazing! So spacious as it gave us 2 bathrooms... Great for self catering and family nights in. No the pools aren't heated but you can understand why when it can be so hot. It really didn't take long to warm up and our 2 year old lived in the pool. Besides, a lot of pools aren't heated in port Douglas if you read up. The resort has a really nice feel. And the staff are lovely! Bar staff did seem a little stressed and didn't know how to make some drinks that we asked for but otherwise lovely. It's great to be a bit out of town altho we did have a car, but the walk to town nice as well. Not the best choice if you want the hustle and bustle and to stroll to/ from restaurants and bars at night. we ate in a lot so suited us well.

I can understand the comments about smelling musty etc as our friends room was very damp and smelly as it was on ground floor and very dark facing out onto garden. Staff happily changed thier room but I also think that when your in the tropics you expect it to
Be a bit damp! Our room however was lovely and light so didn't have that problem.
Overall a great trip and we wished we had stayed longer!

Hello Scottwhanau

Thank you for taking the time to write such a fabulous review of Mantra Portsea. The resort team work so hard to make our guests' holidays special so it is wonderful to hear when we have managed to do this. We appreciate your honest evaluation and common sense about the tropics. We will ensure our pool bar staff receive further training on making new cocktails and will investigate your reports of mustiness.

We would love to welcome you back for a longer stay next time!
Thank you again

I must admit that before arriving we had a slight feeling of trepidation due to some exaggerated negative reviews for the Mantra PortSea but we were pleasantly surprised how much we loved staying here and can't speak highly enough of both the staff and the facilities at the Mantra PortSea.

The open air reception area is so unique and front desk staff were always very friendly, helpful and welcoming so we immediately felt relaxed.

The resort itself is in a great location within walking distance (15-20 mins) of the main street of Port Douglas and has a path to the beach which was very handy.

The breakfast provided was the perfect start to the day with a great variety of breads, mini muffins, cereals, juice and a great coffee machine.....if you want a hot breakfast there are plenty of options in Port Douglas but in the tropical climate we just didn't even feel like a big hot breakfast anyway!

The pool isn't heated as previous reviewers have alerted to but in QLD why would you...it's for refreshment and the pool bar during Happy Hour was a great place to relax and had no issues getting a drink.

The plants and gardens were all beautifully maintained and helped enhance the tropical feel to the location.

The only improvement I could think of would be either a ramp or elevator located somewhere onsite so those with prams or mobility issues could stay on the 2nd or 3rd floor rooms....I'm sure staff could accomodate this when booking if made aware of the requirement..

We stayed for 3 nights so didn't get our room serviced during this time but not a deal breaker by any means as the room was spotless to start with except for a few places where we probably all have some dust (ceiling fan, etc) and the clothes hanger on the balcony was a great place to dry our swimming gear ready for the next day.

Overall, a very pleasant stay and recommended for both families and couples.

Hello Camwri

Thank you for your kind words. You have said it all - the location, facilities and staff of Mantra Portsea are all great! We appreciate your mention of the beautiful tropical gardens and the open air lobby. We have a ramp between the first and second level and endeavour to place all guests with mobility constraints on these two floors. Thank you for mentioning the ceiling fans we will target this area of concern immediately.

We do hope we get the chance to spoil you again. Please call us on 07 4087 2000 if we can be of assistance.

Thank you again

This was our 3rd time to Mantra PortSea and I must say it was our best holiday yet!
It seems that any negative feedback has really been worked on so there was nothing to complain about. The staff in particular were absolutely wonderful and couldn't do enough to make sure we were happy and had all our needs taken care of. We got the room we requested, fresh towels when needed, nothing was too much of a problem. They were all fantastic to the kids, especially Shoo who was an absolute delight, very professional. We also loved Marnie who made us great Mocktails and Cocktails!
Kids absolutely love the pool and would be happy to spend all day everyday in there if possible.
We can't wait to return the PortSea next year!
