We booked our dream stay in the "Luxury Boutique Apartments" over the web, and were dismally disappointed. Our unit was right at the reception area, dark, dank and the "charming balcony" had only a trellis to separate it from the main highway into Port Douglas. Nothing like the trendy apartment with great tropical balcony looking out over a pool with a barbeque and jacuzzi. we saw on the website. This, we were sternly told by the reception attendant, was the penthouse and we did not book that. They refused to change our booking and the booking agents wanted nothing to do with us (they had their money!) After much haggling the staff agreed to accommodate us (party of 4) in the neighbouring Port Douglas Sands resort in a rather grotty apartment, where we had to share a bathroom, but at least not on the highway.
If you do want to stay at the Mediterranean, insist on a pool facing unit, not a road facing one (and half of them do face the road!)
Also a lesson about booking agents - always check your terms and conditions regarding acceptability of accommodation. In Europe you're always free to inspect the room before taking it!!
