This place has the best location in Port Douglas. A little known gem. It is on a deck, right on the water next to the marina. The food is reasonably priced but the view is the real star. There is an area for people who just want a drink and also a dining area. A great place to sit and look at the view and watch the boats coming to and from the harbour.
We went there about 6pm to watch the sunset and what a sight it is from that location. just as it's getting dark the fruit bats fly across the sunset like a vast flock of migrating birds. Someone told us that there's an estimated 20,000 of them and it goes on for over 20 minutes. That sight will live on in our memories.

While this may be a great place for locals, it was not so great for travelers. The Tin Shack is located right on the water, so we thought it would make a great place to have a relaxing dinner and drinks while watching the sunset. Unfortunately, we got neither. We were quickly seated at a table on the water but were given no other information. As non-locals, we were asked to sign a non-club membership sheet, so the waiter knew we were not locals. After sitting at the table with no wait staff for a few minutes, we realized we had to get up and wait in line to order food. Then wait in a separate line to order drinks, even water. Not very relaxing and by the time we finished ordering, the sun had set.

First the food: The menu itself was poorly organized and there were very few food choices. We ordered grilled chicken, which was dry and almost tasteless, and the pasta of the day, which was quite good.

Second, the drinks: I asked the bartender for a drink menu. He said “We make everything, so the menu would be too big.” I asked for 2 different drinks and was told they couldn’t make them so I asked for suggestions for a specific liquor I noticed they had and he had very few options. What bartender can’t recommend a good drink? We ended up with frozen margaritas, which tasted like 7-11 slushes.

And to top it all off, the restaurant was having a raffle so the whole feel was that of a bingo parlor. Certainly not the relaxing dinner we were hoping for. For wasting a wonderful opportunity, I wish I could give them less.

The Tin Shed has very much an Australian flavour - unpretentious, relaxed, beautiful by the water, good food at great prices and welcoming staff. The grilled barramudi was delicious. Am travelling solo and chatty and helpful staff member Mal was terrific. Entrance is a bit flat but it is the tin shed after all and that is part of the unassuming delightful character of the place! Worth a visit and a meal.

I have visited Tin Shed twice in the last couple of days. This place has magical views across the water and is perfect at around 6pm to watch the stream of boats come back in from various trips. This is no gourmet dining experience but you can't go wrong with a bucket of prawns and a glass of wine. I also tried the calamari and the barramundi spring rolls which were o.k but nothing special. This is a place where you can just relax and soak up the ambience and beauty.
