“Totally in love with this place”

I had a wonderful time at the Woodduck in Cairns! I've spent my first nights in Australia at the Woodduck.. and just couldn't leave. So finally spent around 3 months at the Woodduck and don't regret it! I don't know how people can not like it unless they were actually looking for a hotel and just chose the Woodduck to save money. The staff is so friendly, Cindy (the manager) puts so much effort in her hostel, the rooms/bathrooms/kitchen are always kept clean (it is an old building, so you can't expect it to look new/perfect), perfect location, you've got free WiFi, free breakfast and free meals at the Woolshed which is only a short walking distance away. But what I loved the most were all the people staying there. As the Woodduck is quite a small hostel with only 9 dorms (+ private rooms) you get to know almost everyone after a short time and you really become part of the 'Woodduck-family', which is of course never consisting of the same people as backpackers come and leave. I've spent 2 months at the Woodduck in August/September and came back for another month in January and it was never hard to make friends. I really felt at home and would even call the Woodduck "my home away from home".
I've had the best time of my travels at the Woodduck and will recommend it to everyone who's travelling and wants to go to Cairns as it is such a lovely place!
If you're used to 5 stars hotels though and don't wanna meet new people, you shouldn't stay at the Woodduck as socializing is just part of staying there and makes it in my opinion such a awesome hostel!

We had a fantastic stay at the Woodduck in Cairns! People were really friendly, staff were helpful, free pizza night on Wednesdays is a great night out, and we go as a hostel so even solo travellers wouldn't feel left out and it's a great way to meet everyone! The breakfast is basic, just cereal and oats, but at least it's free! The only downside is that the TV lounge could be better, as when it rains there is not much else to do! But otherwise we will definitely be back again when in Cairns!!!!

First the good things - it is close to the town centre, there's free wifi (pretty weak though unless you have a room right above reception), there is free breakfast every morning, consisting of oats, cornflakes, milk tea and coffee, on Wednesday nights you get free pizza from the woodshed, the kitchen is fairly clean.. That's about it.

The bad - I found this a very awkward place to be. The majority of people there are long term Germans, who only converse with each other and are unfriendly towards anyone new. There is no air conditioning, only one fan in the 8 share room I was in, sheets weren't provided but weren't needed anyways since it was so disgustingly hot. People were constantly going in and out of the room to reach the attached private room and hang out there. The door was constantly open and there is no security. But the worst thing was the BED BUGS. Woke up one morning to discover bites all over my arms legs, hands, torso.. The following night I didn't sleep at all and turned on the lights several times to find bedbugs actually crawling on me and on the mattress. Probably would have been better off to sleep on the ghetto mattress thrown out on the balcony. Have since moved hostels, now have to go through the rigorous process of getting rid of the infestation ... DO NOT STAY HERE.

The place has a very easygoing and laid back atmosphere and it gets quite noisy in the night time.
The rooms are clean and the toilets as well.
The biggest diaappointment was the cookers, as they were all broken for couple of days and couldn't cook anything. Other than that, the location is very centric and the staff is nice as well.

Bed bug, mattress is on the floor in the "triple private room", which you can only enter after you walk across the junk in a 8 bed dorm, and you share the toilet and shower in the dorm. No aircon, no wifi in 95% of the rooms, no chair and everyone sits on the balcony which is also the corridor. in the dorm I think 5 guys share 2 fans...

After organising my room with Cindy, who couldn't have been more friendly, I arrived off the nightbus absolutely shattered. They don't offer pick up so had a 15 minute walk. The hostel is pretty easy to find once I had my bearings! The night 'manager' was pretty rude to someone who clearly just wanted to get settled. It just got worse. The room STANK. There was rubbish and stuff everywhere. I was too tired to care at the point. Luckily I had day trips booked everyday I stayed here so didn't have to spend too much time in this dump. There's no communal area so they sit along the corridor, smoking weed, listening to music, watching films til late in the night (the night manager seems more bothered about his day job in the travel agent then shutting everyone up at 11AM) the kitchen is gross. No cutlery or bowls. Had to wash some up to use. Then breakfast consisted of stale cornflakes and warm UHT milk. Gross. The free meal vouchers they give you for the woolshed are good. That's about the only positive thing I can say. The guy in the bunk below me checked out and the sheets weren't changed, they had stains. The ensuite was constantly flooded, no soap to wash your hands. I think I had long termers in my room, who were quite rude when I keep the door open to let some fresh air in (in hope it would remove the smell). The staff (apart from Cindy who was away) are rude jobs-worths who get a kick out of being awkward just for the sake of it. You'd have probably had a better (and quieter) stay at gilligans, and that's saying something!

Stayed in this little, friendly hostel for just over 2 weeks and suprised with the mixed reviews on tripadvisor. They are either extremely positive or very negative. Really don't understand how you can be negative about this hostel, I can only assume people who don't like to be social and want to stay at a hotel but don't want to pay for it, make a negative remark. The staff are very friendly. it's a real welcoming place. It is an older building, but kept clean. . I will recommend this hostel to all the cool travelers I meet because I know they will have a great time and it's one of the best deals in cairns with all the free stuff you get.
