“So Poor”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

Arrived in Cairns and booked Woodduck through STA, its less of a hostel and more of a work house. Rooms are extremely cramped, bugs everywhere and random people walking in all throughout the night to use your bathroom. People literally have no social area to congregate so they sit outside the rooms making loud noise all night. There was little about it that was welcoming or friendly.

The one benefit is the free meals at Woolshed and that the location is quite central in Cairns, without that im quite sure how anyone stays there with all of the decent hostels there are in Cairns.

One of the best hostel that i never been ! Always good people and great atmosphere, free wifi, free breakfast, free dinner and once a week free pizza ! You can also enjoy the sun in a great swimming pool and jump like a idiot on the grass ! :D i've spent the last 6 months in this hostel and i'm so sad to leave. If you go to Cairns go to Woodduck :D

I stayed here after a girl I met working in the outback raved about it. The price was ridiculously good so I figured it was worth a shot. Well.....I have never been so happy to leave a hostel. The best bit was the free wifi. I was working while there and it was impossible to sleep and people would just walk in and out of the room to use the bathroom, even if they weren't staying in our room. The sink was blocked, we did have a plunger but that disappeared so I ended up brushing my teeth in the shower. If you love smoking then stay here because thats all everyone does, even in the rooms, which is hilarious when you get the hostel rules clearly stating that it won't be tolerated. When I complained about all this to reception it got shrugged off. I'd say you get what you pay for but Im now in a different hostel for the same rates and free wifi and its a million times better (and cleaner).

Maybe not the cleanest or quietest, I liked this hostel for the friendliness of staff and other hostellers. Breakfast, dinner at a nearby bar and wifi were all included in what were maybe the most competitive rates. Very central, it was well located and I thought it was very good value.

Worst hostel....arrived to a tiny, dark, smelly, dirty room - not impressed! Ants everywhere all in bathroom which was disgusting. Bathroom is very basic and very old. Kitchen was also dirty. Wifi doesn't really work that well either. Very noisy + window didn't shut so had loud music + smoke going in my face...lovely!! The only good aspect is the location as it is a short walk to the mall and lagoon.
Would not recommend here!

That is the worst hostel I have been. I found hairs on the sheets I've got and the room are dirty all over. The aircon didn't work and the pillows are really old and dirty. Furthermore, you have ants everywhere, no chance to keep them out.

the doors are always open so everyone can come into your room.

the kitchen is just disgusting.

for that price in cairns, absolutely NOT worth it to spend.

Woodduck was pretty much the best hostel I stayed at in Aus. I intended on staying there just a few nights but like everyone ended up extending and was there for 3 weeks. A great place for traveling alone as the atmosphere's so friendly and I felt at home right away, it was sad to leave! Great value, free wifi, clean, all you need in a backpackers, it's a bit old so bear that in mind but everything works pretty much fine and it never bothered me. It's a small hostel so you get to know people quickly, very social but if you want to have some quiet time you can generally find it. Definitely the place to stay if you're in Cairns.
