“Good hotel and fantastic staff.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

We stayed at Tropical Heritage before and after our trip to the reef with Mike Bell. Rosemary and her staff helped us with a rental car, excurstions, and saw to it that every request we had was met and every question we had was answered. We walked to town in 15 mintues and had no problem with the location. It's close enough to town to eliminate the need for a cab, but no so far the walk was difficult. The room was spacious and clean. The 2 hour free internet is not common and much appreciated. We stayed at several hotels throughout the country and this is the only place to offer free wifi. The policy of only connecting to one device at a time is standard in Australia and other places charge much more for internet connection. I would recommend this hotel to others.

Thanks foir your review, it is always encouraging to myself and the staff of Heritage to recieve such positive feed back from guests, specially in view of the fact that I live in Madang, PNG and we have always endeavoured to promote genuine PNG hospitality. The Heritage is run more like a home than a hotel and Rosemary's effort in maintaing the excellent relationship with guests is reason enough for potential visitors to choose to stay at the Tropical Heritage. Thank you again for the response.

Stayed for two nights as it was convenient for the Mike Ball office. Thanks to Rosemary who both upgraded us to a lovely spa room and for obtaining the great gluten free bread for breakfast. Also, for filling us in on the transfers from Cairns airport. Fantastic. Also, really appreciated the total 4 hours free wifi (2 hours each night)-nice touch as it does not seem standard in other places. The bat trees along Abbott St are a complete trip - and the transfer to the Ocean Spirit for our one-day GBR trip (extra fee on top of excursion) happened smoothly and easily.
It is a little walk to the main Lagoons area which is the only slight drawback - but if you're up for a 15-ish minute walk it's easy enough.

Room Tip: The Spa room we had was spacious and comfortable with a little fridge and kettle - and with a nice s...

Thank you for your review. We apreciate comments as it enables us to see ourselves through the eyes of our valued guests. The Tropical Cairns Heritage was designed to provide affordable accommodation - we are always anxious to improve wherever possible but at the same time, we are concious of very serious discounting by the major hotels in Cairns due to the depressed toiurism industry, which regretfully results in hotels such as the Heritage having to cut rates to remain competitive. This is competition and we accept this and we all hope and pray that tourism will rebound as we have further plans to expand in the future.
Again, thank you so much for your comments, I am sure Rosemary and her staff will be pleased

We stayed here for 4 nights at the end of February. Although initially booking a Studio Room we were upgraded to a 1 bedroom apartment (they had been offering a 3 nights for 2 deal which we hadn't been aware of, so this was a nice gesture to make up for missing the deal).

As everyone agrees, the staff are exceptionally helpful & friendly, & will go out of their way to help you with any problems or information.

The location of the Heritage is fine, although, in temperatures of up to 33 degrees, I think attempting to make the town centre in 10 minutes on foot would leave you somewhat sweaty & exhausted. I would suggest 15 to 20 minutes as more realistic - which is not a great deal of time anyway!

The standard of accommodation was fine for the Hotel rating - not luxurious, but reasonably comfortable & adequate. I would take issue with some of the reviewers who have raved on about it being the best they have experienced. One has to wonder about the standard of their previous accommodation!

After our stay at the Heritage, we moved to an apartment on the front at Palm Cove - just up the coast. It is a small fairly upmarket resort, & we had a 1 bed apartment complete with full kitchen & washing machine & drier, with a balcony overlooking the beach. It was certainly of a higher standard of accommodation, for the same price as a 1 bed at the Heritage.

I would therefore suggest to the owner of the Heritage that he is perhaps over reacting to some of the slightly critical comments made on this forum. You don't have to stay in 5* hotels to enjoy a decent standard of accommodation. His hotel is fine, but not perfect, but he has marvelous staff. That's enough for most people.

Thank you for your review, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay at the Heritage. In regard to your comments about the hotel being basic is misleading. We enjoy 3.5 star rating from AAA and charge accordingly. At present in Cairns, very few hotels are enjoying any profit, most are managing to just survive - despite this, the Heritage contnues to upgrade rooms. Most of all the staff really try very hard to please our guests and obviously they did this during your stay and note they upgraded your accommodation without charge - we also have offered 12, FREE room and provide complimentary breakfast which is very generous when you consider that operating hotels in Cairns is very marginal at the best.

We stayed at the Tropical Heritage Cairns for one night after completing a dive excursion out on the reef. The property is located on a quiet side street, which worked out fine for us since we were looking for someplace where we could get a good night's sleep before leaving early the next morning. We were very pleased at check-in since they were able to get us into a room earlier than expected. Rooms are quite large and comfortable overall, but the hotel is showing some signs of wear and tear. Our room had some unsightly stains on the carpet and the shower door didn't do a very good job of keeping water out of the rest of the bathroom.

An hour or two of wi-fi access is available for free for one device. Even the 24-hour wi-fi package (currently $10) is limited to one device at a time, but we managed fine with that.

The management seemed very friendly and were helpful in setting up transportation for us during our short stay. If you're looking for a budget accommodation in Cairns and don't mind being a ten or fifteen minute walk away from the center of town, the Tropical Heritage may be a good choice for you. If you want something more upscale and close to the action, then you'll probably want to keep looking.

Thanks for the review. My immediate response is that you want clean, comfortable accommodation at an affordable rate. I believe this is what was provided. If you want to live in the centre and can afford the higher costs of 5 star hotels then this is your choice but don't compare hotels in different categories.
The Tropical Cairns Heritage was designed as an affordable, comfortable hotel that is clean, well managed in a very desirable safe location that is centrally located between the Cairns Base and Private Hospital, medical centres, the Esplanade and 10 minutes walk to the CBD.
The rate of room on Trip Advisor is a mere $99 with free breakfast and offers a special deal of pay 2 nights, the next is free - converted back in real terms, it must represent the best deal in town.

Rosemary is gorgeous, couldnt be more helpful and friendly.
the rooms are so spacious, could not fault.
appreciate the free internet for the first 4 hrs, we have paid $15 at other places for this same service.
the pool is lovely and the pool/ BBQ area is great, plenty of room and very clean.
Continental breakfast was very relaxed and easy going, it was like being in my kitchen at home.

Your response restores my confidence in humanity. You have said it all, Rosemary is a marvellous Manager and host assisted by fabulous staff that are intent on providing the best value or money in Cairns from a 3.5 star hotel. As you would have seen through consistent reviews we rate at present #7 out of 71 in Cairns, it was also awarded with the Trip Advisor 2012 Travellers Choice Award through hard work.
Yes it is a small hotel, we do not profess to operate 5 star service but we do provide top value for money in a friendly environment, eager to help where ever we can.

Maybe I'm the anomaly here, but I've stayed at hotels on six continents and while the Tripadvisor reviews generally have helped me to the find best combination of value and quality, the reviews on Heritage Cairns made me scratch my head a bit after actually staying there. First off, its a good 15-minute walk to the main area of the Cairns esplanade (Alas, things may look closer than they appear on google maps, and I'll blame this mistake on myself), and food and shopping options in the nearby vicinity are non-existent. Lovely, friendly folks working the front desk, and I arrived on a really late flight and had no trouble with the late check-in process. The rooms and bathrooms are badly in need of a renovation; the size and cleanliness is not bad at all, but just the set-in mustiness, and a bathroom which I would describe as spartan, at best - very low-quality, out-dated fixtures. I didn't even understand the purpose of the bathtub-sized swimming pool. The rates on the rooms are about average for economic accommodation in the area. Is it a bad place? No, it should do fine for most budget travellers. Would I go back? Probably not. Its a place to sleep, nothing else.

THANK YOU for your review. Yes you are the anomaly! I am not sure what you expect from a 3.5 star hotel but suggest next time you should choose a 5 star hotel and pay the difference.
Following your review, we inspected all bathrooms, we found then all in excellent condition, in fact we are posting a picture on Trip Advisor - the shower screen doors are not always water proof, specially when the show nozzle is pointed at the door. You pay a poor commitment in an offhanded way by stating the cleanliness is not bad, does this mean it is good?
We do not have a swimming pool we have a spar and of course you could have said the hotel had a large spar, rather than a tiny pool again your negativeness shines.
Any hotel in the tropics including my home gets musty in humidity specially when air conditioning is turned on and off.
The location on Google is absolutely spot on, it is taken from satellite image. The location is 10 minutes from Esplanade, shops and CBD, you may be excused if you were a slow walker. The location is also within one block of Cairns Base and Cairns Private Hospitals, medical centres and it located within the actual CBD.
Fortunately for us your review is not consistent with 99% otherwise we would not have been rated Number 7 out of 71 hotels in Cairns and I can only conclude by suggesting you choose a 5 star hotel when next you travel.

Mary and Bruce were awesome! Such good host. I stayed there three nights and it was a perfect location to the city and tour pick-up. I walked each night to the local restaurants and walked the board walk along the ocean. They provided a towel for my Great Barrier Reef tour and made sure I had breakfast before each day's excursions. They give you 2 hours of wi-fi for free and then I was able to buy additional hours for a really low price. Nothing fancy but perfect for my needs. And the host were 5 star!!!! When I return, I will stay there again.

Room Tip: If you need additional hours of wi-fi and will only be on there for small incremental sessions, then...
