Cairns was our first stop on a tour of Australia. When we arrived, we were super-jetlagged. In our experience, it's best not to take a nap when you arrive in a new time-zone, but to do something fun to get a little exercise and start seeing the sights. The Esplanade was just the place to do it! Our hotel was nearby, so it was within walking distance. The Esplanade is a pleasant walk along the water's edge. You pass the famous aluminum Fish sculpture and the Swimming Lagoon and get a great look at the coastline stretching a little ways north of Cairns. There were shade trees in spots, benches to sit on and a great view. It was an excellent way for two jet-lagged, brain-dead travelers to spend the afternoon.

Awesome place to walk around, see people, experience the beauty of the city and just an overall great outing. I could spend hours here.

We enjoyed a daily walk on this boardwalk almost every day and never got tired of the overall beauty and setting. Before a meal or after; in the morning or just any time you always feel good.

This elevated boardwalk, beach not advisable as per attached photo, runs for about a mile and a half, along a beautiful bay. There are facilities for all including beach handball, skateboarding, roller skating, fitness machines, free BBQs and picnic tables, Kids playgrounds, free lido, climbing walls, wc's, Armed Forces memorials and separated cycling and skateboarding lanes ( some cyclists, as in UK, still force themselves upon pedestrians in the walking only areas). Seabirds, including pelicans are regularly in the near vicinity and twitchers gather to watch them. Shelter is limited in a tropical downpour but at least the rain is warm. If only other cities could provide such a great and free facility, the only commercial activity is a cafe specialising in family meals. Cairns is a great place!

This has to be one of the nicest boardwalks anywhere. It is wide and allows for multiple activities (walking, jogging and biking). It is well maintained and pretty much covers the whole Cairns waterfront. Its right on the water so you have beautiful views of the harbour. Also, if you are a birder, you will find a wide assortment of the typical Queensland endemics along the walk.
