Cairns was our first stop on a tour of Australia. When we arrived, we were super-jetlagged. In our experience, it's best not to take a nap when you arrive in a new time-zone, but to do something fun to get a little exercise and start seeing the sights. The Esplanade was just the place to do it! Our hotel was nearby, so it was within walking distance. The Esplanade is a pleasant walk along the water's edge. You pass the famous aluminum Fish sculpture and the Swimming Lagoon and get a great look at the coastline stretching a little ways north of Cairns. There were shade trees in spots, benches to sit on and a great view. It was an excellent way for two jet-lagged, brain-dead travelers to spend the afternoon.
