Owner description: The Cairns Museum tells the story of Cairns, right in the heart of the city. Housed in the award-winning School of Arts building, the Museum reopened in 2017 after a major renovation. The Cairns Museum now contains five galleries that showcase the history of Cairns, including Aboriginal Traditional Owners, sugar cane history, WW II, tourism development, local architecture and cyclones, as well as the inside story of living in the tropics - amongst crocs, toads, jellyfish and snakes! “Quaint and interesting”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

We visited this little museum and found it very interesting. There is a lot of information about World War II as it affected Far North Queensland. The staff were friendly and delightful. There is a little drawing table for children to occupy themselves while you look around and kids can sit in a dentist chair and an aeroplane for photo opportunities.

“A good startpoint to Cairns”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

A lovely inner city museum on Cairns that details the local history. The volunteers are terrific and the exhibits bring the history to life. A beautiful veranda overlooking the city centre, in a building that was part of Cairns early history.

“An escape from the heat!!!!”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

Apart from this quaint little museum being of great interest, it has the best air-conditioning in Cairns!!!! A great place to escape the heat and learn something new at the same time. It also has some lovely, reasonably priced souvenirs. ***

“Fantastic volunteers”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

Visited the museum today and we were more taken with the volunteers than the displays. The lady on the desk was really friendly and we got a personal guided tour from a yen reman who I assume was her husband. We were allowed to touch all the exhibits, in fact he encouraged us to do so. The staff were all obviously very well informed.

“Step Back”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

Cairns' history whilst not ancient is worth investigating. The last 100 years has seen the most growth and its an interesting insight. In the centre of Cairns CBD so just wander in
