We travelled up to Kuranda by cable car and returned by the scenic railway. Both quite different experiences were extremely enjoyable. The view from the cable car is wonderful as you gently swing above the tree canopy. There are a number of stops where you can alight and explore - each one worth doing. At Kuranda we took a River trip which was excellent. The skipper was very witty, knowledgeable and informative and we had close encounters with turtles, fish ( I was so excited looking over the side as they all gathered for a snack provided by the skipper, that my new sunglasses slipped off my nose and into the deep) and a freshwater crocodile. We had some very exciting bird sightings, including a fish eagle and the trip all ended too soon. A 'must do' treat which was only being enjoyed by a few on the day that we were there. The boat excursions go from the jetty behind the station. The station itself is amazing. It is very pretty and is a riot of colour from the flowers and shrubs growing everywhere. We had booked a 'Gold Class' carriage for our journey back to Cairns, mainly because we would be served a Devon Tea and we had been away from our Devon home for about 6 weeks by then, so thought that we would have a reminder of home. It was therefore disappointing to find that this had become drinks, nibbles and a small plate of cheese and biscuits. There were only 3 of us and we had very attentive and friendly service and comfortable armchairs. The journey was enjoyable and interesting but a Devon tea would have been a real treat!
