Owner description: Kuranda Scenic Railway is the original scenic rail journey to Kuranda. This spectacular experience travels over bridges and through tunnels hand-made by North Queensland's pioneers over 100 years ago. Traversing the World Heritage listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park, this is one of the world's great railway journeys.

We travelled up to Kuranda by cable car and returned by the scenic railway. Both quite different experiences were extremely enjoyable. The view from the cable car is wonderful as you gently swing above the tree canopy. There are a number of stops where you can alight and explore - each one worth doing. At Kuranda we took a River trip which was excellent. The skipper was very witty, knowledgeable and informative and we had close encounters with turtles, fish ( I was so excited looking over the side as they all gathered for a snack provided by the skipper, that my new sunglasses slipped off my nose and into the deep) and a freshwater crocodile. We had some very exciting bird sightings, including a fish eagle and the trip all ended too soon. A 'must do' treat which was only being enjoyed by a few on the day that we were there. The boat excursions go from the jetty behind the station. The station itself is amazing. It is very pretty and is a riot of colour from the flowers and shrubs growing everywhere. We had booked a 'Gold Class' carriage for our journey back to Cairns, mainly because we would be served a Devon Tea and we had been away from our Devon home for about 6 weeks by then, so thought that we would have a reminder of home. It was therefore disappointing to find that this had become drinks, nibbles and a small plate of cheese and biscuits. There were only 3 of us and we had very attentive and friendly service and comfortable armchairs. The journey was enjoyable and interesting but a Devon tea would have been a real treat!

The cableway is marvelous, and it goes on forever, all the way to Kuranda where we hugged and held a koala!!! Great views, and multiple stops along the way where you can get off and view the forest, waterfalls, and beautiful scenery. This was truly a highlight of the whole trip.

The train is an old model with open windows. you are assigned a car when you book . Each car has a small bathroom, water available and scenic old photos of the building of the tracks, bridges etc. There are lovely waterfalls along the way and the train stops at an overlook for the largest falls. The train moves slowly so that you can enjoy the scenery along the way. It is a pleasant ride but can be very warm in the summer. Near the end they give you a cool towel to refresh yourself. A great way to get to Kuranda.

Quite an experience. The train was brightly painted and quite old. We stopped at various places along the way to take photos, and we had a commentator who told us all about the history of how the track was built. Some times it was quite worrying when you could see the carriages in front go round a very steep bend. Very enjoyable.
