“Fantastic Hostel! Highly recommended!”
Reviewed November 20, 2010

We stayed here for one night in September 2010! This was a fantastic hostel and highly recommended! It is however a 25min walk to central cairns, however there are regular shuttle buses to and from the city centre. We stayed in a delux room with shared kitchen facility. It was fine!Clothes washing facilities were fine and there was a swimming pool. There was also free internet! The staff were fantastic, especially the girl at reception she was so helpful and booked a number of packages for us, like whitsundays etc. The first night we got a voucher for a free meal at the lovely woolshed pub! Staff also dropped us to our great barrier reef boat, because it was in the early morning. Definetley recommend Topic Days!

Although this hostel is about a 25 minute walk from the city centre, the regular free bus provided by Tropic Days means that you don't have to walk in the 30 degree heat to get to the action.

The hostel is brilliantly run by a team of young, enthusiastic staff who are always happy to help and give you personalised advice on tours.

My girlfriend and I stayed in a double room which was very comfortable. The air-conditioning was quite noisy so we had to use the fan during the night, which was fine.

We enjoyed the facilities the hostel had: free pool table, swimming pool, free dvd rental, clean kitchens and tour office.

Arriving here as a couple, with no double rooms available, they were friendly enough to give us a spacious three-bed dorm for the price of a double. The common areas are superb; two big common rooms with free internet (and a computer you can use if needed), a big area outside with a swimming pool and lots of hammocks. Not something you'd expect in a town like this. There is also a nice atmosphere, the receptionists have been really kind to us (eventhough we didn't book any tour, since we have our own car). They have given us some advice with regards to a day trip by car. Some suggestions of them were not as good (they sent us on an unsealed road for 30+ k's..real off road stuff.. we have a 2WD car).
Some critical notes have been mentioned before:
-the free dinner is in the woolshed, awful place, and tiny portions, you have to upgrade (for extra cost) for a proper meal.
-they do start services at 7 am, so having a place closeby reception is not recommendable
- you have to pay extra for air-con if needed.
Overall we like it here, with some side notes with regards to the value to money.

Tropic Days was my first hostel experience in Oz, and what a place to start off! Lovely, family-run hostel kept out of the way of all the carnage in Cairns CBD, with comfy beds (no bunks + all linen provided); hammocks; free internet!! ; free tea and coffee; free airport pick-up; free shuttle buses to and from town; swimming pool; fab Aussie barbie on Monday nights; and plenty more! Last, but ceratinly not least, the warmest of welcomes from all of the staff. Anna and Phil made it... warmest of welcomes, excellent knowledge and advice on the many tours and trips out there, always smiling, and made it feel like home.

4-night stay turned into 8, which turned into 12, and ended up 16! Only complaint... it's so good, it's difficult to leave.

Thanks guys! Hope to be back :)

For who doesn't want or need to be on top of the packed and loud backpacker bars in the very centre of Cairns this is the absolute place to be. Well... maybe even for those who do want to spend their nights partying away, as this charming little hostel it is located just a short 20 minute stroll from the CBD In a sober condition that is …  ) and even a shorter one to the main shopping centre.

For those who don't want to spoil their dancing shoes or just don't want to "loose" precious swim/party/shopping/dive/snorkel or "whatever-time" Tropic Days runs regular shuttle busses right into the middle of town action. Just listen to the “bus to town” yell and hop on.

And that is not the only kind of action Anna or Phil can get you into. Though I've been traveling for about 9 months now, I've seldom seen such enthusiasm, caring friendliness, energy and eagerness to help you to make your stay in Cairns the very best possible. If you want to book a tour, bus, any other great adventure or need some info on where to check out the girls/boys just ask "the office". It seems to me they've done them all so they definitely know what they're talking about and can hook you up with any tour company you want.

After all that action or if you just want to have a lazy day you just jump/step into one of the many hammocks spread around their Eden-like garden. Just watch out for the dinosaur in the tree near the patio. You might be lucky and one of your fellow guests may be playing the guitar or one of the didgeridoos that can be found in the kitchen. And if you're very lucky it might even transform into an enjoyable jam session with some more of your fellow guests. If not you, can always escape into the pool or get on the free Wifi. Yes it is really free and unlike many other free Wifi networks I came past, this actually works, keeps working and does all that at a very decent speed!

I camped for about a week on the shady campsite, tucked away behind the (free) pool table. Rooms are clean though and spacious communal areas (kitchens, showers, toilets, …) are cleaned daily by the ever friendly staff.

Free dinner is provided 5 days of the week. On Monday and Thursday you better stay at Tropic Days for dinner as on Monday the weekly “All Aussie BBQ” and on Thursday the “Pizza and Beer Night” are a “must attend”. The BBQ caters roo, emu, crocodile, barramundi and the best sausages in the world. And the pizza night, well it had been a very long time since a ate that much pizza .

Hmm, this was supposed to be a short review.

I guess I just wanted to say that:

The days I spent there were definitely from the "Tropic" kind!

This hostel takes the cake for being the best one I've EVER stayed at. The rooms are clean, bright, and roomy enough to share. We had a double room right off the kitchen and never had any issues with noise. The facilities are better than most 4 star hotels- several large kitchens make cooking a breeze, the many bathrooms are clean and spacious, the internet was fast and free, the pool in the back is well-maintained, and the hammocks may be the best invention ever. We arrived in Cairns and promptly spent about three hours in those hammocks reading, relaxing, and getting to know our fellow travellers! While the hostel is probably a 20 minute walk from the CBD, they have convenient free shuttles that run back and forth every hour or so. I think we only ended up having to walk once during our 4 day stay! The tour desk is extremely useful. We booked all our activities through the hostel and every recommendation they gave was SPOT on. Just a few things to be aware of: the free evening meal is at a famous Backpacker Bar called The Woolshed and is honestly pretty awful- it is worth upgrading to another option for a small surcharge. Also- the airport pick-up is strictly one-way- you need to arrange for your own transport back. Finally- if you need to leave luggage, just know that their office is closed from around noon to 4:00. You'll have to leave your things out in the open during this time. Our stuff was safe- just don't leave anything valuable.

I really liked this hostel, it felt more like a home really. We stayed in a lovely bright private room. I think there was 3 other rooms on our level and there was 2 bathrooms also, which was great. The place was very clean, except a bin in our room would have been helpful.
It is a 10-15 min walk to the centre, or about a 30 min walk to the marina, which we didnt really mind at all, although i wouldnt walk it when it gets dark, id probably opt for a taxi, the last free shuttle back is at 9:30 pm. We usually walked in and got the shuttle back or vice versa.
The only thing that i didnt like was that our check in took 45 mins, which for a small hostel i think is ridiculis, the lady who checked us in (who otherwise seemed lovely) kept answering the phone and attending to the people queuing behind us before our check in process was finished, which i dont think was good customer service at all. It should only have taken 10 minutes.
Apart from that all the staff were lovely.
