I flew into Cairns for the start of its festival and did not have a reservation so when i got into town on the advice of the rough guide i went west of the main shopping centre looking for a good place to stay. After trying a couple of hostels Gecko's managed to squeeze me in.

The hostel is clean and tidy and located opposite the entrance of the car park of cairns shopping centre. Included in the price of the room is free internet, which is currently being upgraded to wifi, tea and coffee twenty four hours a day and free breakfast cereals with milk. In addition, the manager also gave me a voucher for a restaurant running a promotion where backpackers got free meal between 7pm and 9pm. It has a kitchen which provides crockery, mugs, ect (I had to pay a $10 deposit for this in brisbane) and a lounge area with a sofa and arm chair to watch T.V.

The Hostel has a pleasant quite relaxing atmosphere where guests are encouraged to be quite after 10pm with no alcohol allowed on the premises. My room was spotless with a comfy single bed, and after each guest leaves the bedding is changed.

I really enjoyed my stay here and if i visit Cairns again will definitely try to come here.

When you are a 60-year old backpacker and you want to have some peace and comfort then Geckos has what it takes. It is a listed Queenslander historical building with a very interesting past and simple but clean and comfy rooms with aircon if needed. The communal cooking area is large and there is coffee and tea on offer 24 hours as well as a free breakfast of cereal and milk.
Any tours or excursions booked via the manager will save you money as his discounts are generous. Nothing is too much for him, you only have to ask.
The shops and attractions are very close, as is the railway station.
The garden attracts various songbirds and there is a swimming pool for the hotter months.
I have been back several times, would not even consider another hotel. This is a very popular place (deservedly) and booking in advance is advisable.

Hello Linda. Geckos is a very peaceful place. Its a great place for travellers that like it quiet to rest and relax. Thankyou kindly for your really nice review. All the very best and we will see you again someday. Oh by the way our oldest backpacker is from Atherton tablelands, Heinze, 85 years old. He originally came from Germany many years ago. Cheers from Peter and family.

Me and my girlfriend originally booked in here for 4 days, but ended up staying for a month. It's a perfect place to stay if u wanna get away from the noise of the town centre but still wanna be nearby (its right behind the main shopping centre). It's family run, and they are very friendly and helpful with whatever you need. The room was really comfy, and the bathroom gets cleaned at least twice a day. Would happily stay here again if returning to Cairns.

Spent 3 nights in Gecko's backpackers- the best backpackers I have stayed at to date! The room was lovely (I had a twin room); comfy bed, plenty of space, fan, clean sheets etc. Dining/communal area was great for just chilling in the evening/ free time. Manager was very friendly and helpful. Perfect hostel if you want a friendly, laid back vibe plus good value for money!! I'll definitely be coming back :)

Room Tip: I loved having a twin room, quiet and clean, 2 single beds, plenty of space, good value

My girlfriend and I spent a night at Gecko's in June and came back again in July because we felt the value for money was very good. We were impressed by the comfortable bed and quiet surroundings - just perfect for getting a good night's rest. The room was well-equipped with ceiling fan, fridge and air-con. On our first stay the room even had a desk, another room did not.

The location is one of Gecko's greatest assets. It's right next to Cairns Central, which means many stores and services are a two-minute walk away (Coles probably being everyone's #1 choice). There is only one restaurant close by and the noise does not carry over to the hostel at night. There are plenty of bars just on the other side of Cairns Central so you will be able to walk back to the hostel easily after a night out.

Quiet is of course not guaranteed as the hostel has other guests. Not everyone respects the "quiet after 10pm" rule and in the back building (rooms 20+) the floors creak a lot. If someone walks through carelessly, the entire building will shake. So try to keep that in mind when you visit the bathroom at night. ;)

A few words about the amenities:

Free internet is a great asset in a city where almost everyone charges for internet access. But you should know two things:
1) It is not wireless so cannot be used in rooms.
2) The internet room only has two cables (with room for three people to sit tightly) and as such they are almost always taken. You will have to queue for your internet time and when you finally get to sit down you can't stay too long (if you want to stay friends with the other people in line that is).

If I could make a recommendation, I would tear down the wall to that room and install an 8-port switch underneath a large table with room for 8 people to sit comfortably with their computers. I would drill holes in the table through which to thread the ethernet cables to eliminate cable clutter. Then just remind people that whenever there is a queue, 15 minutes per person is the polite maximum.

The free breakfast consists of cereal (corn flakes and weetabix), tea, instant coffee and milk. Pretty basic, but will feed you in the mornings. The kitchen is large and well-equipped with large fridges. I did however not see a french press and would have loved to make my own coffee with that. A recommended purchase. :)

We did not use the laundry facilities, the barbecue, pool or their tour service so we can't say anything about those.

On the whole Gecko's Backpackers gives great value for money. For 56 dollars a night we got a comfortable double bed, fridge, great location and quiet surroundings. The only mild disappointment we felt was the shaky back building, the underwhelming breakfast (maybe advertise it as "basic breakfast"?) and the crowded internet room. But those are only minor scratches on Gecko's otherwise shining armor. :) For reference, we are 30 years old and have fairly high standards. Younger or less demanding customers should be pleasantly surprised!
