“Good hostel in Cairns”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2011

Location could be better but the complimentary airport & city shuttles make up for it. Good pool and bar at the hostel and most importantly the rooms have great air conditioning. Stayed at both Calypso & Northern Greenhouse and while NG's location is far better, I'd prefer Calypso as it's not only cheaper but has a better pool, bar, & air conditioning.

We booked 6 days at Calypso over New Years (10/11) and got picked up from the Airport by the shuttle which was great.

Our room was very basic however it had very good air-conditioning.

The amenities (showers, toilets) were all shared and of a good standard. Cleaned regularly.

The shared facilities (kitchens) were good too although we didn't use them.

The swimming pool was poor and the bar wasn't much better. The night-life at the back packers was supposed to be good according to the website, but at no point did it ever resemble more than a few people having a few quiet drinks. I guess everyone was going to town every night.

The free shuttle to town and back was great, the only down side is the last but at 11.05, as apparently that is when Cairns gets going. The 20 minute walk back is not a pleasant one either. The distance from town is more than it seems.

A lot of the other back packers were doing specials with free meals and free accommodation nights which was a bit unfortunate given Calypso didn't really have much of a reason to go back.

Overall, good value for money but not much more.

Was rather annoyed at one of the Bus drivers who almost crashed into my Rental car after he was driving like a maniac in the town centre 5 minutes after I'd picked the car up.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 4 nights in Decemeber in a double room. Rooms provide everything you need as a backpacking pom - simple, clean, air con, comfy and we loved how tropical the place looked! Found all the facilities great, good clean bathrooms, big kitchen. The music does start playing really loudly from 7am right through till 1am which we didnt mind but if you are a light sleeper it may keep you awake! We found the staff really friendly and helpfull and loved the free airport pickup/drop off shuttle. There was a free shuttle into town and back all day which we didnt get at any other hostel and as for people saying the location was a little far out - 10 minute walk's nothing! Only down side we found it a bit cliquey.

room was a double in back so it wasn't so noisy at night. if you like to party, well there is cheap beer for sale and plenty of folks to drink with. a real party scene. thankfully we were in back and could get some sleep in a/c quiet. bathrooms were clean and convenient.
great hangout area and kitchen/eating space
good value at 50 bucks for dbl with free airport pickup and also FREE DROP OFF at designated times. one of the few that offers that which saves 10-20 bucks.
there is also a shuttle which runs into downtown much more frequently than the place we stayed at around the corner. ( cairns beach house) If you walk it might take 20 mins and it can be hot in perth so an hourly shuttle is great.
well run. but no BYO as they sell their own liquor.

the first night we got a room just in front of the bar, the music didn't stop before 1 :00am and the people laughed and yelled all night long so the next morning but we asked at the reception for a quieter room and they nicely gave us THE perfect room: large and comfy bed, plenty of light, so peaceful and just next door to the bar and the bathroom, clean....for only 45$/night for 2.
just one last advice: Cairns is full of great bars and place to go party don't stay at the zanzibar (the hostel's bar) which is kinda lame.

On arriving very late here the bar was closed at 12pm so the atmosphere was quiet. The next morning the reggae style jungle theme area was filled with part style people and groups of guys out on party/stag weekends. The Ibiza style hostel has a kitchen area for guest to cook something.

The staff.
The backpacking, holiday working politeness gave us no problem (or) nothing special, However 24 guard service.

Hostel rules.
No alcohol allowed in (but) you can buy it from the in house bar.
Reception closes and the side gate with code must be used.

The pool is not the cleanest but ok for drunken guests. washing and drying machine at a cool 3 bucks each. Vending machine available 24/7. Air con in my double private room with fan , no tv, clean tidy and bug free. linen included.

Free 1 hour shuttle bus into town with a wait if the 7 seater is full. (again the backpacker crazy driver) seat belts on!

Their is a small gap above the shower room toilet and WC which means when people walk up the stairs they get a good glance.

I would recommend week day stay and 2 night at most.

Other items
Internet at $4 per hour (cheaper in town)
Happy hour - $3.50 (ok for 1)
Quiz night (Thur win a bar tab)

Me and my travel partner, who are used to staying in YHA's across Australia were rather disappointed with this place. although cheaper, you get what you pay for. few amenities, unclean. They have a very convenient shuttle which brings you into town and picks you up every half hour but don't be fooled. We were taken into town and never picked up. we ended up waiting for a long time and then walking back to the hostel. It is not close to any good shopping or grocery stores We were planning to stay more than one night but soon changed our mind
